3597LMTHD

I am looking at getting a refurbished 3597lmthd. Only thing I am concerned of it is discounting by Garmin. How long do they typically support software updates for older models?

I have a 2597lmt that has recently been having issues. Freezing and now it takes about 3 minutes to reroute if I take a different route. I like the setup just done with it. I always live in phoenix and the traffic function on the 2597 is just about useless. It never asks me if I want to take a faster route. Hopefully the HD on the 3597 will help with that.

Appreciate any feeback. Thank you.

Glad you bought it yesterday. It is now priced at $230.

I Wouldn’t Worry

GPS City has been around for over 20 years. Over the last 8 years or so, I’ve ordered hundreds of parts from them for my business including 6 GPSr’s. Returns are accepted without question.

They don’t always have the best price but I learn a lot from their question and answer page with customer reviews on many of the products they sell.

I was disappointed to see their price on the 3597 refurbs has gone back up to $229.95.

The GPS Store is still selling the unit for $199.95 though.

yep!

Spring for the Live Traffic option. It gets data from your cell phone (and it uses very little of that) to provide traffic data far from any listed HD coverage. It's really nice to see traffic information about slowdowns while inbetween cities and get warnings about slow traffic far ahead.

3590 Issues

I've been following this thread for a bit. I have a 3590LMT that I purchased a few years ago refurbished from Fry's Electronics (I'm also in Phoenix). About a year or so ago, the unit started to show a white screen rather than booting up. By disconnecting it and letting it power down (using the power switch generally did nothing), it would usually return to life. Recently I have also been having sound issues where the volume would drop dramatically and then randomly return to normal. In the last couple of weeks, I also experienced the stuttering voice from time to time (usually when you are trying to get to an exit and can't quite understand what it is saying, of course). Routing worked fine.

I just purchased a used unit on eBay (around $90) and it appears to work fine. I hope that it doesn't develop the same issues. I love the screen resolution on the 3590 and the extra features that my 2595 (in my wife's car) is missing. I also purchased it refurb at Fry's and it has always worked fine.

In reading this thread, I noted that I have 3 map sets installed:

Cnna - Na - Dem North America DEM
CN North America NT 2016.20 3D
CN North America NT 2016.20 ALL

The unit is using close to 90% of its memory. I removed the photos that the previous owner had stored and the archived files.

Which maps do I need?

Thanks!

Changing volume levels:

See page 4 of the owners manual regarding automatic volume:

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/nuvi_3500_OM_EN.pdf

If the nuvi loses external power from an intermittent cigarette lighter connection, power cord, or connector, you will also hear a decreased volume when the nuvi just uses its internal battery.

Maps:

-the DEM map is what gives your display shadows to indicate mountains, canyons, etc. I really like it (try driving Hwy 64 alongside the Grand Canyon!) but it's not essential. If you uncheck the DEM map, you can mimic the effect on the map display of removing the file. The DEM map can be deleted, but a better solution is to move the file to a computer backup if you decide to want it back.

-the 3D map shows buildings and such in selected large cities. Simulating a route in downtown Las Vegas shows its features. Like the DEM map, the 3D map can be moved from the nuvi to a computer backup.

-The ALL map is your detailed map of North America complete with built in POIs and must be kept.

If going into the nuvi and removing map files from your nuvi, note that there are two more maps, a basemap and a time zone map. Keep these: gmapbmap.img and tzmap.img. The 3D map and possibly the DEM map will be recreated each time you perform a map update.

Better than deleting maps to gain storage, remove unneeded voice files and such:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31186

Also, if you ever used GarminMapUpdater to update a map (as opposed to using Garmin Express), you may have a ghost map file taking up a lot of space in your nuvi. Removing the ghost file is recommended:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44415

Lastly, a 3590 approaching 90% full still has 800MB to 1GB of free space which is enough to let the nuvi function well and do very many map updates in the future before becoming an issue. Since the 3590 will auto-detect if space is too limited to perform a full map update, it'll offer installing the map to a SD card.

@hjrw

If you haven't already done so, you might be able to improve the performance somewhat by clearing the trip log and disabling Traffic Trends and My Trends.

Thanks! That helps alot. I have a large POI file (around 500k points) and it fits fine. So I will hold off on backing up and removing any of the map files. I'll check to see if I have any ghost map files, since I have no idea what the original owner did.

Thanks again

OOooo..I'm going to have to check into that, that sounds really interesting! grin Thank you for the tip!

The DEM map only download if you use GE.If you use mapudater it will not download with the map. I usually save the DEM map in a folder on my desk top so that I can copy it into the map when I do a map update.

Why do you do this?

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

Thanks my 3597 has been acting up too

On a recent trip to Florida from nj trafic worked great on the way down to Florida, but wow on the way back a week later first it was freezing while turning on. Then when I finally got it to go it worked great but traffic was mostly searching. Again thanks for the information.

A flaw when using Garmin Map Updater

BarneyBadass wrote:

Important note: If you have a nuvi in the 3xxx series that supports the 3-D terrain view, make sure you have a backup of the \.system\gmapdem.img file before you install the map update. Some versions of Garmin Map Updater incorrectly delete this file or download it with an incorrect name. You may need to manually restore or rename the file after the map update.

Lots of POI.

I use a SD card for my POI. The smaller ones (8/16GB) are often on sale cheap at Best Buy.
