nuvi fried? (power cord wiring)

To install my nuvi 2689 w/BC-30 back-up camera, I needed to extend the cord to the nuvi (and power the BC-30.) To do so, I cut the plug off the BC-30-supplied power cord for the nuvi, added a length of wire, and wired the nuvi power cord and the BC-30 to a third party cigarette lighter plug (with an off/on switch and fused.) The camera is to be "always on."

When I tested the system by plugging in my nuvi to its power cord, and turned it on, all I got is a blank, white screen. The nuvi "came up" as it should when I did the new nuvi installation/map updating via my PC.

When I added the extension section to the wire, I wired it so the BC-30 power cord center wire connects to the center of the cigarette lighter plug, and the shielding of the BC-30 cord to the outer contact of the cigarette lighter plug. Now I'm wondering if that 1) reversed the polarity of the BC-30 power cord, and 2) fried my 2689 and maybe even the BC-30 camera, too?

Well !!!

It all depends on how well Garmin protects their units from reversed power connections. A single internal diode in series with the power lead would prevent such mishaps.

I suggest that you do a hard reset of the unit and try it on a power cord that is known to be good.

Edit: Is this on a "Powered" mount. Don't know whether the 2689 has one or not. If so, it could be the mount that fried.

@metricman ... according to muell9k's FAQ, http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45200, the 26xx units do not have powered mounts.

What I don't get is why the OP didn't purchase an extension cord. They do make them for the car yanno, and it would have avoided this expensive lesson. He likely fried the innards.

Did you try it with a USB cable off your PC? It could be that the cable is reversed, but unit protected itself...

When I was troubleshooting the Cable I needed to fabricate (Shorting two wires together to be able to power & operate the 660 via USB port)... After I surmised that the suction mount charging/power interface on the 660 had died....
One of the tests I did to confirm the 660 still worked via USB (before I made the custom cable) was connecting it to a PC, and seeing that the Garmin at least powered up into file transfer mode....

P.S. Check the fuse in the plug.. It might have blown! smile!

P.P.S. I see you went with 3rd party DC Plug. I don't know, but I believe a USB cable gets +5V, and your 3rd party Plug may have supplied +12V to the USB, so the wiring may be correct, but you delivered +12V where unit was expecting +5V ?????

Try an un-modified USB Cable with a PC and see if you can load POI's, and if that works, SCRAP your modified power system and start over!

Good Luck

Don't like to cut OEM cords

Ditto the poster's comments above.

I hooked up my nuvi's power cord to a cigarette lighter adapter attached to an Add-A-Circuit fuseholder tapped to a switchable fuse block.

I was able to extend the AC cord and also have the nuvi function auto on/off with the powered cradle.

Connections

How camera is connected to Nuvi? It's sharing Nuvi cable or it has wireless connection? If connection is made with this same cable as power is supplied it may be that you put power on data line. It may fry device that is not secured against this type of overloading. In addition this Nuvi has traffic? If yes, is traffic antenna inside of Nuci or in power cable?

If you don't have wiring chart, and obviously you are trying hit and miss with this wiring, I say get new cable plus extension. This way you spend much less than after you fry Nuvi or camera. Wiring experiments that leads to frying device are not covered under warranty.
