Garmin MapSource City Navigator DVD Not Free?

Hi all,

I just emailed Garmin's tech support about obtaining a free copy of MapSource City Navigator 8.0 to go with my new StreetPilot C550. They replied that the software is not free, but rather costs $75. They also said that City Navigator 9.0 is due to be released in August or September.

Has anyone else gotten this response from Garmin? Also, if I buy the new version when it's released, can my C550 be upgraded to City Nav 9.0?

Thanks,
Dave

CN On DVD

Haven't heard that one from Garmin. Usually they want to charge you a fee for "shipping and handling", but certainly not $75.00. Wait and buy CN 2008 (AKA version 9.0), which you can load to your 550 to bring the maps up-to-date.

I agree, there is no sense

I agree, there is no sense in buying it for $75 just to buy it again in 2 or 3 months. It's nice to have the v8 DVD, but in my opinion, as long as your GPSr already has v8 preinstalled, it doesn't give you THAT much more functionality to make it worth that kind of money. I'd just wait for v9 if I were you.

Although, I have heard people say that getting the v8 DVD for free all depends on which customer service agent you talk to. So if you really have a desire for the DVD, try calling several times until you get someone that will set you up with it for free.

You asked for the wrong thing.

CALL. Don't email. And ask for MapSource.

Tell them that you want to use it to MANAGE YOUR FAVORITES and transfer them to and from your StreetPilot.

When the UPDATE to the City Navigator MAPS is released in a month or so, you can, in fact, purchase the upgrade to update your maps. The cost will likely be $75.

And keep calling until you get the answer you want

It's like calling the IRS - if one agent doesn't give you the answer you're looking for, thank them and call back again. Then document who you spoke with and when.

Seriously, it took me a couple of calls (and I received a number of MapSource upgrade disks) until I got the full version of MapSource. Like Motorcycle Mama said, you need to tell them that you are looking to work with your favorites on your computer at home, rather than messing with your GPS at 65 MPH on the highway (none of us do that, do we?).

Let us know how you make out,

Joe

yep

Same thing happened to me. They told me I didnt need it.......twice now.

BTW......is the version of MapSource I would need with the Nuvi 660 v8 or v8 NT. I know that NT is running on my Nuvi........Is there a v8 NT of MapSource?

Nuvi 660

It's all in how you ask

I did it by e-mail.

I simply said I wanted to be able to manage my "favorites" list on my Nuvi, and that I understood MapSource would allow me to do that - and asked how I could go about getting MapSource.

They replied with a request for my address to ship it to. I got it, and have been using it since.

No more free Updates for NUVI - What about other GPS ?

I called Customer Service and was told no more free 1 time update for maps for NUVI since May (I think they said). You will have to buy the next one due out in Aug or Sept?? Seems like a real customer issue for those who plan on getting one now and a new map version will be out in a month or so?
This could be a bit expensive at the current rate of $75 a throw.

Do other companies charge for map updates? and if so how much?

what is the version

What version of MapSource are you guys using for the Nuvis? Is it V8 or does it have to be V8 NT (same as what is installed on the unit)?

I e-mailed Tech Support and told them as others pointed out I wanted to work with My Favorites in order to save them as POI's. Map Source is what you want and they do send it free of charge when asked for by e-mail. Of course, I registered my unit and GOT LUCKY in getting the right tech!!! Not all seem to understand why we want to do this, certainly not sales people. Obviously not all tech people are on the same page. Do keep trying, whether it's phone or email, you're bound to get it as we all have...

Thanks

Actually, I double-checked my software version and I do have V9/2008. Once the V9/2008 DVD is released, I'll try again with asking for a free copy. As it is, I'm doing pretty well managing waypoints with Google Earth, even if the process is kluge-y. (For me, it's basically a one-way operation...find the POIs in Google Earth, export KML and convert to GPX.)

Thanks for the encouragement...at first I thought it was SOP for Garmin to hand out CN DVDs. Apparently it takes a little "social engineering." (Reminds me of a M*A*S*H episode...LOL.)

Note to Garmin..this isn't acceptable, you need to review this process

I don't know why the Cust. Svc Reps. would hesitate to send you a DVD?

You can't do anything with the maps or anything unless you have the unlock code anyway.

So what's the big deal ? I could "maybe" understand them charging a S&H fee, but other than that, there shoul dnot be a problem providing some good old customer service.

$75 a throw? Hahaha! Back in

$75 a throw? Hahaha!
Back in the day when I had my Street Pilot III updates cost $150. Since I used it for Private Investiagtion work in Florda, a state that is constantly building, I was forced to pay for the updates and would get them via cd-rom.

MapSource was great for planning my route, I usualy skip traced 10-15 people a day.

$75 a throw, lol, good one!
