How do I convert alerts from sounds to voice

I have a c340, which as we all know, doesn't have mp3 capability. I downloaded the red light camera files, and they work great....except the alert is the double chime. Is there any way to use the text-to-voice feature of my unit to warn me about upcoming cameras, instead of the chimes? If so, how?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry about that on the sounds. sad

If not mp3 then what?

MM, do you know what format the voice files are in (.vif, .ogg, .wma or .vox) if there is no mp3 capability? I think I found a solution! wink

Well, the voices on my Zumo have the file extension VPM. There are also SUM files that go along with them, but I'm not sure how they work together although I suspect that the SUM files are just some sort of checkfile since they are only 1KB while the TTS voices are around 14MB each. The non-TTS voices are about 1MB each.

I suspect that the "ding" alert sounds are some sort of WAV file embedded into the OS. They don't show up separately. Some (probably most) of this "lives" in the ROM.

the non-TTS vpm files...

Can be broken out into separate wave files, then they could be re-compiled back to the VPM - and the dings, etc. are in there...I just took apart the generic English voice file and it gave me 116 wav files, most of which are one word bits and the occasional phrase, and various clicks & beeps. Without actually doing it, I am unsure it would work to replace the particular beep with something else and recompile the vpm file.

Anyone wanting to play can get a utility to split the vpm into wav files, and then join them back again can get the utility here: http://tinyurl.com/238t6o

I found a site that allows one to create/modify voice files with VIF and CHK extensions (TomTom):

http://tomtom.graemelucas.co.uk/tomtomstep1.htm

I was naive to think that all GPSr voice files were created equally. It’s safe to say that the VPM and SUM files are proprietary to Garmin units while the VIF and CHK files are proprietary to TomTom units. sad

I wonder what Magellan uses? wink
