Tiny Lakemoor gets big bucks from red-light cameras

Another place to avoid

I will be avoiding this place. Hopefully, they are able to pass the law to put an end to the cameras.

Tiny Lakemoor

I remember when this intersection was going through "a study" to see if the red light cameras would be necessary. I travel through Route 120 and 12 all of the time. I don't think I've ever personally witnessed someone blowing a red light. This particular intersection is all about the rolling right. Yes, we must worry about all of the non-existent pedestrians that are always about to get run over by cars rolling through a red light.

If IDOT is saying that the red light cameras made things worse, why is Lakemoor allowed to keep the cameras? This is a joke that doesn't have a punchline, except that Lakemoor will get a really nice piece of real estate for the people that installed these "safety cameras."

$5 MILLION DOLLARS! That is outrageous!

It's all about money

They think they will make money but will see.

it's all about

being RESPONSIBLE for your actions. If people followed the law as written in the Illinois Driver Handbook everyone gets when they apply for a license, then there wouldn't be the problem of people rolling through a signal where all they had to do was stop before turning.

Oh, excuuse me, it isn't THEIR fault, there was no traffic and they were in a big hurry to get to Starbucks for their overpriced swill.

Yeah, right. Everyone drives exactly the speed limit, uses their turn signal every single time, never, ever tailgates, and whatever other "law" we're supposed to follow to the letter.

If you don't personally know the intersection in question, what is your point exactly? Oh, I know, red light cameras are all about safety, and not about ripping people off. They're cool and stuff. And when Chicago was caught red handed in a scandal, look the other way. Don't mouth off about things that are unfair. Because we're all supposed to follow the law.

This particular intersection is a money grab. I know firsthand. If all of the law breakers were actually running a red light, I'd have no problem, and Lakemoor would have no money. Fact.

And your solution...

And your solution to the problems caused by those those who don't follow is?

_

My solution is to equip every car with a monitor. When you do not use your turn signal, follow too closely, do not stop at the white line exactly, do not precisely go the speed limit, you get fined $100 per infraction. Add all of the other laws we're supposed to follow, not stopping long enough at stop signs, radio is too loud, you know, whatever we deem dangerous or annoying, and keep adding up the charges and putting all of that profit into the pockets of those that have our best interests in mind.

Is everyone up for the challenge?

Why?

Not sure why this intersection should generate such revenue. There are clearly visible signs saying that the intersection is covered by red light cameras. Whenever I see such signs I'm particularly careful to be "good".

Re: Op

RLC's are not about safety, etc. They are simply a way to generate much needed revenue for municipalities. Many locals have just about tapped out routine sources. The local tax base simply will not respond positively to paying for current much less future spending. RLC's are in the same class as charging administrative fees, etc. to people who have to deal with the criminal justice system, etc. It mostly impacts people who have little if any political power. But, when it comes to the law, legislation is written by those who own the process. RLC's are just another expression of that reality. So, what else is new.

Not sure why? If you were from the area, you'd understand. Route 12 is a heavily traveled corridor for people traveling from Illinois to Wisconsin. We don't have an expressway because certain municipalities made sure of it. That intersection was targeted because of the high volume of cars, not because of pedestrians, or accidents or any other reason. Most of the violations are rolling rights on red.

As far as your comment on the intersection being clearly marked, I'll have to remember to make sure it is.

red light

Hopefully google cars disrupt all these municipalities tax machines of red light cameras.

To be or not to be

Bucks

Lakemoor must be safer already!

Make that money

The Cameras are always a money making plan.

Clearly marked

I did go through the intersection on Monday in one direction, east on Route 120. The intersection is marked, but there are signs in front of the "Red Light Camera Enforced" signs. If one is not paying attention, the signs would be easy to miss. I'll have to check the other signs when I go that way.

Name change to Takemore?

Don't worry about markings

All you have to do is install the RLC database from here on your GPS and it will give you a warning when you get near it. Waze also will, provided someone has entered the camera as being there.

i think

Someone should catch a fish and tie it around the RLC!
