Doing Away With Red-Light Cameras Getting More Costly for Haines City

HAINES CITY | Haines City commissioners voted in May to take down the red-light cameras, but it's not going to be that easy.

The city owes American Traffic Solutions, the Arizona-based company that operates the system, about $70,000. That number could reach $114,000 by next fiscal year and $200,000 by the time the contract for the cameras is up.

The situation is stickier — and pricier — than anticipated because, according to City Manager Jonathan Evans, ATS told the city the contract was up in January when it actually runs five years from the date the last camera installed issued its first ticket. That's until next July.

"If we take them out now, worst-case scenario we'll owe $800,000; best-case scenario we'll owe $200,000," Evans said. "That causes me some heartburn."

If the city still wants the cameras out by the end of this year, it will cost $628,000, including $52,000 to physically remove them.

Awwwwww

Don't you just feel so bad for these poor civil servants who were trying to make a buck for their city by fleecing drivers? I can't imagine how stressful their jobs must be versus the easy decisions business owners and employers have to make everyday.

I hope their jobs are less stressful once they can remove the cameras and get out of these abusive, one-sided red light camera contracts.

I'm sure there are a lot of people that will remove them

for free.

Ha, You Got That Right

Yep, however evidently the contract will keep them around for a while longer.

There's a Story About How They Aren't Going Away Any Time Soon

Some kind of snag with removing them, I'll have to update.

Editorial Explains the Situation

Here's an editorial that explains it all. I can't find the story.

Drivers Stated Obeying the Traffic Laws!

Perhaps the cameras had a positive impact! Here's a quote from the article:

At the time, former mayor Gow Fields noted the problem with those cameras: “From what I’ve seen,” he said, “there has been a significant change in driver behavior.”

Maybe it isn't ALL about the money.

I Agree

I agree that is a great quote. I believe the cameras have changed some drivers' behavior. It is interesting that the city considered moving the cameras to other intersections though to see if they could get more revenue out of people not knowing they were now in a new location.
