Nuvi 3597 Favorites/Saved Places issues

I've just upgraded from a Nuvi 755 to a Nuvi 3597 and I'm having some odd issues with the favorites.

I transferred my favorites from the 755 to the 3597 with Express and it worked, but...

There are two GPX folders on the 3597.

: GPX
: Garmin\GPX

Also, the POI

The one in the root seems to contain the Current.gpx file and the Garmin\GPX has a file called GarminExpressImport.gpx. The express import file has a timestamp several months older than the file on the 755, yet seems to contain a duplicate of the current.gpx, so I'm not sure what it is. Removing it had no effect.

This BIG issue I'm having is that I can't seem to delete any favorites with Extra POI Editor. I had to go into the Dev menu and switch it to Mass Storage Mode to get the 3597 to show as a drive instead of a MTP device (Running Win7), but when I load the Current.gpx and delete or change items, then save it, the changes do not take effect. When I check on the device they are still there and if I load the current.gpx in EPE again, they are back. I even saved the gpx elsewhere, then manually replaced it on the gps and it still didn't work. I'm pulling my hair out over this (and I don't have a lot left to spare!) Is the 3597 storing the favorites list somewhere else? If so, can I edit it outside the device?

can't do

What you are playing with is a COPY of what is stored in protected memory. You need to delete them using the unit's interface as it interacts with what's stored in the protected area. Delete anything else that has current, express, or temo with an extension of GPX from the unit then power off and back on.

Current.gpx

As Box Car has indicated, "current.gpx" is a file described in your GarminDevice.xml file as
<TransferDirection>OutputFromUnit</TransferDirection>

Make a backup of both your units.

Then, do a search for "*.gpx" (without the quotes) on the device and delete all the .gpx files. (note that the .current.gpx file will reappear as soon as the device is turned on.

No matter. Go into the device and delete all of your Favorites.

Now use EPE to load the "current.gpx" you backed up and make changes as desired - including deleting those you do not want.

SAVE AS temp.gpx.

Attach the device and copy temp.gpx to the device.

not all GPX files

You don't necessarily need to delete ALL GPX files, only those with Express, temp or some other name that would indicate it has favorites data. Routes are transferred to the unit as GPX files and you may not want those deleted.

If you do copy in your saved favorites as Temp.GPX, you only need to turn on the unit as it will read that file and add its contents to the protected copy in memory. After loading those, DELETE the file or it will automatically be reloaded if you delete any content from those entries when you restart. Not deleting Temp.GPX has bit many a user in the hindquarters and they then complain they can't delete locations from their saved locations.

As a_user says, one may not want to delete "ALL" .gpx files because in the Archive sub-folder of the GPX folder are past "tracks" (I think would be a good term) and you might or might not want to keep them.

I think I am correct in this, but if one loads "Temp.GPX" to replace Favorites/Saved Places (ie. these will be written to "current.gpx" the next time the device is turned on), the device "remembers" that it read such-and-such .gpx file on such-and-such timestamp and will not access that .gpx file again. Thus, one can do this.
a. delete all Favorites/Saved Places
b. attach the device to a computer
c. copy to the device a .gpx file(s) containing new "favorites"
d. safely disconnect the device and turn it on
e. find in Favorites/Saved Places all of the new "favorites" from the .gpx file(s) previously copied to the device.
f. delete one or more of the Favorites/Saved Places on the device.
g. turn off the device.
h. turn the device back on and not find just deleted favorites

I realize this is a minor point but it well to know what the device remembers. Actually, I have not tried this but I suspect that if one did a Master Reset with "temp" type .gpx files on the device that the device would add all of the "temp" type entries to Favorites/Saved Places. Does anyone have experience with this? I really do not want to make such a test but someone may have done so in the past.

This is precisely what happens and can be a source of confusion if you don't know that it happens.

Thanks

Thanks for the info folks. I've got the cleanup work I needed to do done now, I found a multiple item delete screen on the 3597 and it went quickly.
