Garmin 2797 custom POI alerts

Just got this huge GPS and all seems well (except for Herculean effort required to insert ball in socket and user manual that fails to show where the microSD card goes).

HOWEVER ... My trust POI collection seems to have transferred over fine. My icons for speed and red-light cameras are there. But the proximity alert is the Garmin bong, not my carefully curated wisecracks.

The manual is no help at all.

TIA

Wav sound files

Since you had a 765T before, you were probably using MP3 files for your alert sounds. On the 2797, you will need to use WAV files and use the SOX sound utility program with POI Loader (if you have a Windows computer) to get your custom sounds to work.

See Charlie's FAQ here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

New Nuvi

AJB, if you follow alandb's suggestion, you'll be up and running soon. Do follow the faq exactly as even a single slipup can cause your custom audio alerts to fail.

When you mention your manual, I hope you mean this one rather than the printed QuickStart that came with the nuvi:

http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/nuvi_27x7_OM_EN.pdf

Note that Garmin's owners manuals and Garmin Customer Service will be of no help to you regarding custom POI audio alerts as Garmin has never stated that wav files can be used for custom POI alerts.

On the bright side, once you've got your custom POI wav alerts running, you'll be so happy with the new nuvi and all its new features. If you have a smartphone, the Smartphone Link app is worth looking into.

Since the wav issue caught you by surprise, two other things may be of interest to you:

1) Should you ever wish to look at the files on your new nuvi or if you plan to (as we hope) backup the files on the new nuvi, be sure to switch your nuvi from MTP mode to MS mode. Our faqs, tutorials, etc. will help you with this.

2) If your new nuvi seems to be missing voices, be sure to add the others:

My guess is that from the factory, your 2797 came with only one voice that speaks street names and one that doesn't, Samantha and Michelle respectively.

You found the SD card slot by now, right? wink

Thanx

Suspected that might be the problem but knew a quick question here would get a quick answer.

Hmmmm..

MyGarmin shows no downloadable voices available. And Garmin express offers only non-TTS3 options. The only TTS3 voice installed is Samantha. How to load others? Or might it be that the device is overloaded with French, Portugese, Korean, etc. (SD card should arrive today.)

Voice updates should be available through Garmin Express or myGarmin. I think you may need to select Optional Updates or some such thing to be offered the voices. If using Garmin Express, a choice should be English language and will be several hundred MB in size.

Yep

608 Mb. Thanx.

What are Garmin Real Directions and Garmin Real Voice

Before you select a voice you may want to look at this https://goo.gl/u4v0V8 .Especially this part.Has both Garmin Real Directions & Garmin Real Voice American English - Samantha .Main reason I use the Samantha voice. You will notice American English - Jack has only Real Directions.

Thanks

Without understanding the possibilities, I chose Samantha. Quite nice, actually.

Real Voice

I've tried a bit of testing Samantha and Serena (RV and RD), then comparing them to the experience to using just Karen (RD only). I still haven't come across a situation where RV excelled, although I may not have been as rigorous as I should have been.

Can anyone point to a simulation or description of where a RV TTS3 voice is noticeably better or even noticeably different than a non-RV TTS3 voice? Real Directions are quite obvious compared to non-RD voice/nuvi so my question is just for RV vs. non-RV.

Not sure

With the information provided from Garmin. I leave that to the experts.

Devices with Garmin Real Directions provide spoken instructions using not only street names but also recognizable landmarks, buildings, and even traffic lights. This helps minimize the need for you to find and read street name signs.

Example:

Without Garmin Real Directions: "In 500 feet, turn right at Metcalf Avenue."
With Garmin Real Directions: "In 500 feet, be in either of the two right lanes, then turn right at the stoplight."

Garmin Real Directions is only available in North America, Europe, and Australia.

Garmin Real Voice uses refined speech technology to provide spoken instructions using a voice that sounds more realistic and friendly.

Where RV really becomes a benefit is at a multi street intersection (not a round-a-bout) where there are 5 Or more individual streets simultainously intersect to form an intersection and the voice says turn left past the BP. And the BP is on one of the corners. That's really helpful. Doesn't happen often but other than that... RV is interesting

A question

Are you sure that's RV that's helping you and not just RD? You may be right but if possible, if you know of such a location could you test it out with Samantha, then Karen and see if there's a difference? (Or use Serena instead of Samantha for the RV and any of the RD-only voices other than Karen.) It seems possible to me that what you're describing is the benefit of RD. In the faq below, a simulated route offers the same instructions whether using Samantha or Serena (RD and RV) or any of the other five voices (RD only):

Leme try

Craig,

I think I know of an intersection... It's about 30miles from me.. I need to go over that way anyway so I'll see if I can't test it out again..

I know real voice ony seems to be beneficial in certain cities... And I thought real directions was geographically more available but then perhaps I've got it
bass-akwards?

Thanks.

I know that my life would be easier if I just accept what manufacturers tell me, but there's a little devil on my shoulder that says I should test and confirm. twisted

Regarding "certain cities," Real Directions only offers landmarks like "turn at gas and fast food locations," etc. for certain cities while Real Directions is much more widespread in its "turn at the stop light/stop sign/end of street" additions to the older "Speaks Street Names" feature which spoke street names but didn't include "stop sign/light or end of street."

As I think about exactly what Garmin writes about Real Voice, it makes me wonder if it's not landmarks, but instead is tone-of-voice, phrasing, etc. and if so, that should be universal regardless of location.

See what happens when you start a thread, AJB! rolleyes

Yep

"See what happens when you start a thread, AJB!"

That's what happens when there are informed respondents. We have all seen the disasters that can happen to a poor soul who starts a thread that attracts the trolls.

Thanks, guys.
