My mac v 22 updated with an initial hiccup, saying the update failed, but when I re-ran it, it managed to install properly.

Working like a charm

Installed, working for me. Thanks!! Now if we can just get that North America 2016.10 map update from Garmin!

Is Garmin Programming Really that BAD?

It seems that Garmin releases an update at least once a week , and occasionally several in a week. Not even Microsoft issues updates this often. It makes you wonder!

thanks for the update

Microsoft purposely holds on to the patches and then releases then on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Sometimes, there are only a few, other times there are lots. If they didn't do that, you would be updating every other day.

Oh course I was really wondering about Garmin when they were releasing updates every day.

Thanks for the info.

After looking at the release notes, I might want to update.
Thanks!

Install??

I still have not installed GE. MapUpdate works so well (with minor glitches) that I hate to install a program that has had problems in the past, and has to be updated every couple of weeks. Is my logic faulty?

Well

Well maybe to some extent but if what your using is still working for you then GE isn't 100% required. If your not using GE because it gets updated so often then your logic may have a fault in it. GE is Garmin's effort to have a "one stop shop" for all updates for all of their consumer products and not just thier GPS units. A lot, maybe most, of the updates you see released are for devices not related to your Nuvi in anyway so a lot of updates isn't a particular problem IMO.

Forced with the new map update

If you want to wait, the GE update will be forced (mandatory) when you start the new map download process.

You only need to update it, just before you install a map update. Otherwise, unless you use it regularly, you don't need to update it.

AFAIK, Garmin Express does not require you to update to the latest version to install a map update. It will make you update your device software if a newer version is available, but I don't think you have to update Express itself. I have never actually tried this myself (using an older version of Express to do a map update). Maybe someone who has tried it will confirm, one way or the other.

Do you keep a backup of your shaded relief DEM map for your 3590? I hope so:

Done.

I'm at least one Version behind....

... and at this rate they will probably be up to v.52 by the time the new map is released, shock so... I'll leave it alone where it is and report back here if it forces me to the latest version or lets me stand as is.

What about PC map install location?

The location path for installing the maps on my PC still cannot be entered. Is this rocket science or just plain incompetence?

Rest assured, I have multiple complete backups of the unit and SD card. The only problem I have is updating my Europe maps on SD card, where it makes me save it to my PC first then copy it to the SD.

Nuvi 265W inop (mostly) after initial GE usage

Wished I had know about the full backup capability mentioned above.

Earlier this week I installed GE for the fist time - connected my 265W and ran the updates. After that the unit would no longer 'see' the SD card (although Windows does create a drive letter for the card, and I can see the contents of the SD card), and the built-in map has minimal detail even tho setup is configured for max detail.

I figured it had been in service long enough and bought a 2555LMT from Frys. BTW, the old 265 had far better routing algorithms than the 2555. In the last few days I've had this unit I'm constantly surprised by the silly routing choices it makes.

I suspect your nuvi 265 is recoverable if you want to put some time into researching the trouble shooting and recovery topics. The first thing to check is to make sure your SD card is formatted as FAT32 (back it up first before reformatting)

As far as routing goes on your 2555LMT, try turning off Traffic Trends.
