Garmin Announces new high end Nuvi - nüviCam LMTHD

OLATHE, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced nüviCam LMTHD, the first portable navigation device (PND) to feature a built-in dash cam and advanced alerts to enhance driver awareness on the road. Thanks to the integrated dash cam that continuously records and automatically saves files on impact, the nüviCam offers the protection of having an eyewitness that records exactly where and when events occurred.

One of the most comprehensive PNDs to ever hit the roads, the nüviCam offers the latest in premium driver-assist features typically found only in luxury vehicles. For example, Forward Collision Warning1 alerts drivers if they’re driving too close to the car ahead; Lane Departure Warning1 alerts will appear and sound if the driver drifts off the road or into oncoming traffic; and Garmin Real Vision™ takes the guess work out of deciphering hard-to-see house numbers by displaying the camera view along with a bright arrow to direct drivers where to go when approaching select destinations.

“The nüviCam LMTHD goes beyond helping drivers get from Point A to Point B,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The intuitive driver-assist features not only lessen the stress of getting you to your destination, but the nüviCam also provides peace of mind in knowing that your commute is being recorded and can be referenced should you need it.”

The nüviCam features a 6-inch pinch-to-zoom glass display with a high-definition dash cam built in to the back of the device. When powered on, the integrated dash cam continuously records on the included microSD card, and if an incident occurs, the device’s Incident Detection will automatically save files on impact. GPS records exactly where and when events occur, and drivers can play back the video on the device or watch later from a computer. There’s also a Snapshot feature on the nüviCam that allows drivers to capture still images in or outside of the vehicle if desired. The included magnetic mount enables the device to be easily and quickly secured or removed from the vehicle.

I know that Bluetooth is somewhat broken in iOS 8.3. Many users of external GPS receivers (in this case, I'm not speaking of something like a nuvi GPS navigator but rather a GPS receiver that plugs into the iPad itself) for iOS devices are having huge issues with their devices that once worked and now do NOT work with iOS 8.3...not necessarily BT connection issues but data feed issues from what I've read.

Kind of makes you wish Apple would test their software before releasing it ... oops, that's what we hear about Garmin.

8.3

It certainly could be the 8.3 update. My Nuvi 3597LMTHD holds connection beautifully. I don't have another non-iPhone I could try. I noticed it seemed to happen only when I manually locked my phone. When I don't manually lock the phone, and let it auto-lock, it seems to stay connected... So far it has stayed connected since I have done so. Anything else you want to know about the unit???

.

Spoke too soon

I spoke too soon, the NuviCam disconnected after several minutes. Frustrating.

These types of issues are indeed the most frustrating because you can't truly pinpoint the issue to one device or the other...or maybe it's both. rolleyes

If your 3597 stays connected, I would *assume* the problem is the nuviCam & it's Bluetooth implementation but then again, who really knows for sure?

You can't test an alternate iOS version either because Apple doesn't allow you to roll back to the previous version (well, you *can* but that window has since been closed).

So now you either wait for iOS 8.4 to be released (who knows when) to see if it *may* (or may not) resolve the issue or you wait for a firmware update for the nuviCam which *may* (or may not) resolve the issue. Maybe *both* will fix the issue...or maybe won't. shock

If the issue is a deal breaker for you (sounds as if it is), I would return the nuviCam to Best Buy while within the timeframe to return it and maybe wait to test again at a later date (after a firmware update from Garmin and/or iOS 8.4 is released). Firmware updates for new Garmin units are usually released *very* soon after the unit is released to the public.

I read in that 8 page Apple forum link that 8.4.2 update, (still in beta) corrects the problem.

Garmin Announces New High End Nuvi - NüviCam LMTHD

These are now in stock at Best Buy stores near me. I am giving some thought to trying one. For those that have this GPS, what do you find to be the best feature(s)?

Civic Rocks

I'll keep my 3580 as well, especially since my Civic already as a backup camera.

NuviCam Best Features

-The camera itself is nice! 1080p video looks nice when transferring to the computer.
-Lane and Collision warnings work really well. Yesterday, it definitely warned me as a car was jetting into my lane from my right.
-At the end of a route, the Nuvi will pop up the camera and points to the exact building to go to. This has worked well so far.
-For me, the Foursquare results are nice, shows me lots of places I have been missing even in my own hometown. Unfortunately, the transfer between the SmartPhone Link and the Nuvi is VERY SLOW, takes between 30-60 seconds to display FourSquare results.
-Pinpointing exact location of stores in Shopping Centers is a nice addition to the mapping software
-6" screen is noticeably easier to read for aging eyes smile
-Outstanding magnetic mount!

Other than that, most of it is the same as the 3597LMTHD and similar models. The SmartPhone Link is not playing nice with my iPhone 6. I have found a workaround to get it to stay connected, but it is a pain in the butt to make happen every single time I start up the Nuvi. Garmin is looking into the issue. Hopefully iOS 8.4 fixes the problem, but my 3597LMTHD stays connected every single time...hard to say who's software is to blame here...

now...

Now where talking...this really is some nice options on this unit/model.

I just purchased one

As I just purchased one I will see how it goes for me And share the results and findings.

The thing about safety equipment is that until it has quirks worked out it can have unexpected responses to inputs. For example, vehicles equipped with autobraking sensor systems that can stop a car in an emergency is great for heavy commuting traffic where people may rip into your lane with little warning or signaling. It would stop or slow your car faster but would also startle the driver and passengers.

Even lane departure alerts can be rendered useless by weather and road conditions.

Technology works great to help drivers but cannot yet fully replace the experience of a human driver.

Reviews would be greatly

Reviews would be greatly appreciated. Just saw it online at Best Buy, and for $400 I"m going to have pretty high expectations. Will wait to see what those that already bought it have to say.

Agree

I also use the vent mount exclusively making the dash cam useless. It is certainly a good idea though for those who can use it.

what????

Creating a video of your air vents and then reliving your trip by watching the video doesn't blow your skirt up?

Humpf..... Well you know, souls in he'll want ice water too! mrgreen

Too Pricey

Nuvi1300WTGPS wrote:

Nuvi1300WTGPS

Same here. $400 is too much.

That camera is a nifty feature ...

I nearly found myself involved in two accidents today (that'll teach me to drive on Memorial Day Weekend!)and that dashcam might have come in handy.

The crash avoidance and lane drift features also sound nice, but without linking it to brakes and cruise control, I dunno how helpful they would be ...

Bad driving warnings.

As someone who drives long distances solo quite often I am very interested in the collision avoidance features of this unit. It is very tempting to "I will take a break at the next rest stop" and push it too far, no bad consequences to date but a few scares. These features will cost me a couple of hundred $$'s as opposed to a couple of thousand from the car manufacturer.

Vehicle Add Ons

CraigW wrote:

Just last night on my network national TV news, there was a short piece about add-ons for vehicles. The news segment said if I remember correctly that vehicle buyers are willing to pay more to gain safety-related electronic add ons but are balking at paying extra for other electronic features like audio options, wifi, navigational aids, etc.

The built in Navigation is convenient, however, I don't like the idea of paying $150 for a map update. I would rather use my trusty Garmin than pay for this.

I like some of the ideas they had with this new offering. I will hold off a bit until I see some feedback from actual users and maybe an update or two.

This new unit is not available in Canada yet. Neither Bestbuy nor Costco carries it yet. These are the only two stores left after Future Shops's demise.

Both Costco and Best Buy carry a fairly limited number of Nuvi models. If you want a nuviCam LMTHD they are currently available in Canada from GPScity.ca. Ihat is if you have a spare $520.00 to layout for one.

Yes, I know about them but they are charging their premium price. I will wait a bit to see it appear at few more stores. Last I bought 3795 from Costco.

GFScity sells it in the US for $400 so it looks like they are covering their butts on the exchange rate between the US and Canadian dollar but 1.30 seems a little excessive.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I might buy it in US in September. I am going to Los Angeles and might buy it there. By that time, many glitches and hiccups will be fixed too.

cost over $500 in Canada

Wow it costs over $500 - really steep? but a quarter of the built in car navigation.
In the US it costs $400 a $100 premium.

Wow.

Not

african wrote:

Wow.

Not really a premium just the difference in value between the US dollar compared to the Canadian dollar. A couple of years ago the exchange rate difference was the other way around, where it cost only 95 cents CDN to by 1 US dollar. Today it costs $1.25 to $1.30 CDN to buy 1 US dollar. Many factors cause this difference in exchange rates like the prime lending rate in the 2 countries, the cost of oil and other minerals as Canada is a resource based economy, the world strength of the US dollar which is fairly high at the moment, plus many other things.

Just curious if anyone has used the nuvicam yet? Would like to know how the cam files are organized. And if the "saved" file are identified in any unique way, I.e. Asterisk?
