POI Factory: Layout Adjustments for Mobile

Today we're implementing a few website layout adjustments to better support mobile screen sizes.

If you're viewing the site with a smaller screen, you'll find the layout now adjusts to fit your screen width. Most noticeably, the second column is "pushed down" below the main column as the screen becomes smaller.

Older web browsers have trouble properly displaying the layout; but it should work well on versions of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari that were released after 2011.

I still need to improve the way important items like menu links and login are displayed in the single column layout; additional improvements to come.

Thank you for your patience.

thanks jon

You manage to keep this site fresh without radically changing what we users have become used to as our interface. It seems Yahoo! changes their layout quarterly and the changes only lead to confusion which you avoid.

If we could, we would nominate you for a COW, but then who would mind the pasture?

Ah well, that explains why

Ah well, that explains why the text got bigger and the interface took up the whole screen. I thought may I had hid CMD + by mistake. (MacBook Pro and Safari.

Noticed the change at 4/20/2015 : 21.40 EDT

Font now too large for both WinXP desktop & Win7 14" laptops in 1280X800 resolution. Was reason enough to update Firefox to ver 37.0.2 & check Security systems for rogue intervention.

Font Size / Zoom Setting

The default font size is a few point sizes larger (16px vs 12px). If the size seems to be way off, check the zoom setting in your browser and make sure it's set to 100%.

Nice

Looks good.

Really like...

the fresh look and my old eyes truly appreciate the slightly larger text smile Works and looks good on a Windows 7 system with resolution set at 1366 x 768 and running on Firefox 37.0.2 with zoom at 100 percent. Thanks!

Nice Refresh!

Looking good on W7 and Chrome. More contemporary and still functional.

New Typeface

You're probably noticing the new typeface. smile

The new layout uses "Source Sans Pro", which looks a little "fresher". It was designed by Adobe with both mobile and desktop screens in mind.

I will check it out!

I will check it out!

Nice....

Thanks for the heads-up. I though for a minute I had messed up my browser (PC) because the layout looked a little different. smile

The biggest improvement was in the mobile version. It went from being so tiny it was unreadable on my iPhone 6 to being spectacularly useable!

Working nice now.

The new layout on my laptop screen had some glare to it and the text was smaller.I am using Windows 8.1. In case someone has same problem.I went to control panel, display and on the left side selected adjust clear type text and followed the set up instructions. On the text size problem just as JM recommended I change text size using settings on Firefox Browser.

Otherwise, on a Mobil device you scroll forever to get to see the list of recently updated entries.

Problem Getting to the Site

I just spent about 10 minutes trying to get to the POI site. Don't know if it's on your end, but all my other sites on the browser were working well.
Just a heads up.

Yup. I'm still working on adjusting Recently Updated and other menu links for the mobile layout. Stay tuned...

One thing to try is reloading the page by pressing Ctrl-F5. This forces the web browser to reaload all of the page components (and avoids loading saved items from the browser's cache).

If you're still having troubles, send me a note with some details via my profile contact form and we can troubleshoot further.

Doesn't work well on Vista IE9 (RESOLVED!)

I am still using Windows Vista on my laptop. Vista which is locked into IE9, not upgradable. Chrome and Firefox are not options for me because of other compatibility issues.

On IE9, the new page displays as a narrow single pane down the center of the window and only about 1/4 the width of the window. It is usable, but quite annoying.

Note to JM ... this is not a complaint and I don't expect you to address it. I know my system is obsolete and it is important for POI Factory to accommodate the newer technologies.

I just wanted to point out what happens on Windows Vista in case you hear from other users.

EDIT: I discovered that I had the "Compatibility View" checked on this site (Don't remember why that setting was checked.) I unchecked it and now I am getting the correct multi pane view. I will let you know if anything else turns up, but at this point, it now looks good on my IE9 Vista machine.

Sorry for the false alarm!

Really

Really like the new font sizes etc. on my Windows 8.1 laptop.

On my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone I like the fact that the font size is now big enough to read the screen without having to zoom in everytime I go to the site. It will take a few days to get used to the new layout but I'm sure it will be fine. I'm used to being able to see "Active Forum Topics" from the zoomed in home page but with the new font sizes and layout I need t scroll down to get to that area. As of right now I'd rather see "Active Forum Topics" appear where, at least on the phone, the "Most Popular Today" listing shows up. That's much closer to the top of the page so no scrolling would be needed to get to it. Just MHO.

I don't

I don't know if this is totally off topic or not but while we are talking about forum layout alterations is there any chance that the software could be changed when your post is accepted your not taken back to the first page of a multi page thread. Personally I find it a bit of a PITA to post on page 5 of a thread and then have to click my way back to page 5 from page 1 after I submit the post.

I belong to a lot of forums and few if any work like this site in this regard.

Great

It caught me offguard when I opened on my phone. Now that I've had chance to play, its a great improvement.

No more expanding and shrinking the screen.

What else would we expect from POI Factory?

can i ask for one more button

I'd like a button that randomly (or pseudo randomly if you prefer) takes words from various posts in numerous threads and weaves together nonsensical sentences for our reading humor!

It might even replace the joke thread! razz

Changes

This looked weird on Safari on a 21" iMac until I adjusted the page width. I normally keep 3 windows open at the same time on my screen. With that page width I had a single column down the middle of the screen with the right side down at the bottom of the page. This was not good but since I've seen other developers do that to me I widened the page and it went back to normal. The only thing about this is that I'll have to keep my Safari at that width most of the time. This is wider than I like but otherwise the new format is fine. Maybe some of the print is to large but that's not a serious problem.

Bet that would really confuse you know who, and all those who make it their business to interpret such nonsense. wink

Oh, my, this is so great on my phone

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 --- It looks great. Thanks.

Edit:
Just a suggestion. At some point could you put a second copy of "unread post" at the top. I just posted in a topic with many post and it took me a while to get back to the bottom for the "unread post".
Thanks, Mary

This puts my mind to rest...

...what little of it there is. I opened the webpage a couple of days ago and thought I had done something on my end to create the larger font. But, after finding and reading this today, I find it was designed by JM to be this way. What a change. I really like the new look. (I would second the nomination for a COW award for JM.) This is good stuff.

5/23 Changes

I made a few additional adjustments to the layout today:

- Added top Links for Login / Unread / Logout
- Fixed some long URLs not fitting into narrow columns
- Fine-tuned white space around posts and pages

The top links are especially helpful for small screen viewers, who had to scroll down to get logged in or start viewing unread posts.

- Jonathan

Nice changes.

Thanks Jonathan

Old messages and faqs, etc. also are splitting words. I hope this is an easy fix, JM.
