POI Factory: Layout Adjustments for Mobile

Today we're implementing a few website layout adjustments to better support mobile screen sizes.

If you're viewing the site with a smaller screen, you'll find the layout now adjusts to fit your screen width. Most noticeably, the second column is "pushed down" below the main column as the screen becomes smaller.

Older web browsers have trouble properly displaying the layout; but it should work well on versions of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari that were released after 2011.

I still need to improve the way important items like menu links and login are displayed in the single column layout; additional improvements to come.

Thank you for your patience.

Splitting words

The fix for long URLs has some side-effects in certain browsers, so I've backed it out for now; but the remaining changes are still in effect.

You might need to do a CTRL-F5 reload to get the latest style sheet.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks

Thanks. Now I'll type and see if all is working as it was in the past. It's still broken in the preview panel as I type and seems to lose letters in the final posted comment. This is being typed with Internet Explorer on a PC.

[Update] You're a wizard. Thanks for the Ctrl F5 suggestion. All is well now and it was a faq fix as well. laugh out loud

Just noticed the word wrap issue as well. Originally thought it was a carriage return issued in error as I only saw it on one post but now it's showing up all over the place.

As I type this post I see that, unlike before, lines are not splitting at the end as you type. It's like using Notepad without Word Wrap turned on, it just prints out on the screen as one continues line.

I think it's the same as before

I don't think it's changed. As in the past, you can edit a message of yours as long as someone hasn't replied to or quoted your message. Once it's been replied to, it's uneditable. The only exception is the first post in a thread which remains editable by its owner.

I don't

I don't any any change. I can still edit my last post. In fact I'm editted this post 3 times.

I bet you can't edit the above now. Braw ha ha... twisted

Lots of times

Lots of times I never could, once someone had posted after me. That's the way it should work 100% of the time.

By the way you can edit your post if someone else has posted after your's as long as your doing the edit when the next post is posted. The line in my previous post about editing it 3 times was being done when you posted.

I made a few additional adjustments to the layout today:

- Added top Links for Login / Unread / Logout
- Fixed some long URLs not fitting into narrow columns
- Fine-tuned white space around posts and pages

The top links are especially helpful for small screen viewers, who had to scroll down to get logged in or start viewing unread posts.

JM,

Thanks for some really neat improvements, especially for mobile devices.

At the very top of the page, on the right hand side there are two links.

Unread and logout.

If the system thinks you've "read" all the entries in the thread and you press unread, it appears that a list of threads that haven't been completely marked as "read" are presented which on the surface seems reasonable.

Edit: found the top of page fn.

It appears there's no easy mechanism to get to the last entry on the page being displayed once the system marks all the "New" entries as being read.

Again, thanks for the really cool overhaul of this site. I, really like the enhancements.

Thanks, Love the Unread at the top of the Screen

Also, after you made these changes I noticed something great on my PC.
I had the page open on half my screen on my PC and on the other half I had a web page open for reference and instead of small letters and the right hand column showing it was like the Mobile page. It was a nice welcome. Only the left column I was writing in was up and all the links on the right side are now down at the bottom when I do the split screen. Thanks, this has not only helped the Mobile but it also it better on half screen of the pc.

Thanks for the changes.

IMO they make POI Factory better for both mobile and "regular" systems.

4/29 Change

This evening I moved a change into production to enable a two column layout on additional tablets models.

The change targets devices that report browser width between 930 & 990 CSS pixels. Affected models include Asus Nexus 7 and Samsung Tab 4 8". (These tablets have a higher actual device-width, but their browsers use a scaling factor to make pages more readable.)

Jonathan

Thanks

I like the two column layout on my PC.

Is this the

Is this the same wordwrap issue JM fixed and posted about on Tue, 04/21/2015 above? If so you may need to CTRL-F5 to reload the browser page in order to get the wordwrap corrected.

That sounds interesting.

As soon as I get back from my travel, I need to check how things look on my Nexus 7.

I agree ...

I don't know if this is totally off topic or not but while we are talking about forum layout alterations is there any chance that the software could be changed when your post is accepted your not taken back to the first page of a multi page thread. Personally I find it a bit of a PITA to post on page 5 of a thread and then have to click my way back to page 5 from page 1 after I submit the post.

I belong to a lot of forums and few if any work like this site in this regard.

... as well as on a multi page thread that has "new" posts according to the recent posts list, when clicking the link it goes to the first post instead of the first new post.

One more suggestion ...

JM,

If possible would you please make it so clicking a link within a post opens a new tab/window instead of taking you off site in the current open window? Many times I click a link someone had provided, read the info and close the window, forgetting that I have to backtrack in order to get back to where I was here on POI Factory because the link took me off site in the same window, which mean re-logging in and finding my way back.

Thanks,
Bill

ETA I just realized this thread is basically for mobile devices, sorry, my comments are based on full size devices, laptop and PC, but nonetheless are things I'd like to see implemented.

Thanks JM, and all staff in general, for providing this informative forum.

Jon, Nice job on your coding. Most people havn't a clue on the hard work and hours spent to make changes like these.
Looks great on my LG3 phone and Nexus7 tablet platforms.

Thanks again.
