Traffic and the 660

Just got a nuvi 660 a couple of weeks ago. Trying to figure out the traffic alerts or lack of. In Michigan, if their's not snow on the roads, they are under construction. On the weekends, they have as many roads as possible limited to one lane.
That's the reason I bought the 660. Yesterday, on a sixty mile jaunt, I knew there was construction ahead of me and detoured around it. The voice prompt was determined to direct me back into the construction mess and after I got around it led into a one-lane open on the freeway. Miles of backup. Let me see if I have it right. Once I get into a traffic jam, I click into menu, then click on traffic symbol which gives me an overview of all construction in area. Which doesn't help me at all. Guess I won't be subscribing to Traffic.
I really like the nuvi, have until Labor Day to return it. We'll see.

From what I understand,

From what I understand, cause I don't actually have it and won't be getting it, it either works well or doesn't work at all. The coverage is sparatic at best.

I think the updates are

I think the updates are highly reliant on the yahoo's the operate the traffic system's in your city. In Phoenix for example I get pretty good traffic info on the main arteries, however weekend closures of I-10 and the 101/202 convergence are not noted.
Also the in Scottsdale the 101 has zero traffic info. Is this a result of Scottsdale not updating?
I think it is a crap shoot really. I do not plan to resubcribe.

Traffic Ahead

If the traffic signal is sent for that particular slowdown your Nuvi will let you know before you get there and give a approx. minute delay. Then it will ask you if you would like to detour.
Now I'm not sure, but for this to work you must be in guidance mode.

That's assuming your in a covered area.

Personally I don't

Personally I don't understand why anyone would think traffic data is going to be accurate and/or timely. At least enough to depend upon to make driving decisions. How many times have we seen those lame reports on the morning news say there is an accident at so-and-so and then you drive by there and there's nothing, it was cleared an hour ago. Or someone calls you to tell you there's a big wreck by so-and-so, avoid the area and there is nothing about it on the news traffic report. Most of this traffic info I believe is transmitted by radio stations. I just don't trust it enough to make decisions.
About the only ones I think I would trust are the LIVE DOT cameras on the internet or LIVE news reports. The rest of it is mostly pretty unreliable. I would never spend money for this service.

Just my USD $0.02.

Traffic and the 660

Living in LA and dealing with the 405, 5 and 101 freeways, the traffic service has come in handy believe it or not. I'm not saying it's 100% perfect all of the time, but for the most part, it has gotten me past some heavy traffic and/or accidents. Ultimately it's how fast the info is tramsmitted and if the area is covered by the service.
