TurboCCC has updated POI Editor

Saw this on another site. POI Editor was updated to beta V5.95 (3-2-15).

Good to discover he is active again.
For those interested you'll find it here:

http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/wiki/changes

Note: V5.94 was updated Friday 2-27-15, it too is available at that link.

:)

Thanks for the heads-up

Originated here.

The info in the announcement on that other site probably originated here at POI Factory: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44197. Turbo was awarded last week's COW award because of his return and work on EPE.

alandb,
Thanks for advising, when I saw the date of 2/27 for V5.94 and then saw yesterdays date of posting V5.95 I assumed this was new news.
We all know what happens when we "ASSume", looks like I fall into that description.

She's not right.

... not in my book muell9k. smile With all the forums out there, it is hard to keep up to date on all of them.

Thanks

I just updated and got to use it right away. I am doing a TourGuide of historical markers in states I will visit soon and have done Iowa and Missouri. My slowest point was to determine how far I must let the Garmin read the markers. I now can with a click determine how big the circle will be. I redid both files.

Thanks for the Tip

There is another thread here on the subject:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44197

And a big THANK YOU to Turbo !!

TRY IT, please

If you are interested in Custom POIs or if you like to make routes, and if you have never tried Extra POI Editor (EPE), I strong;y suggest that you do so.

For example, whenever anyone in the family is planning a vacation, the first thing I do is to find out the destination. Then, I get on the Walgreens, CVS and RiteAid websites and find 24 hour pharmacies near the destination.

Whichever stores I find, I copy and paste their addresses directly into EPE and create a .gpx file which I save with a proximity distance of 5000 feet. I save the file with a name of something like
TwentyFourHourPharmacy near Kiawah SC TourGuide FiveK Manual
Then I download and change the name of the
http://www.poi-factory.com/files/24_hour_pharmacy_ahead.mp3 file to match. What happens when these files are loaded using "Manual" mode of POI Loader is that you will always be getting TourGuide alerts as you drive around your vacation area. This helps us orient ourselves to where they are (and is a distraction that I am glad to accept in order to have an idea of what I might do is one of the kids/grandkids gets sick).

By uploading these little POI files to the factory, we can help others. I usually see if I can build a file of 24 hour Urgent Care facilities for the area also.

There are several great FAQs to help you get started.
Downloading and Installing EPE {G}
Configuring EPE {G}
Building alert distances in GPX files using EPE {G}

Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for posting this!

Thanks

Glad to hear Turbo is still around and updating his cool software. smile

nice to know that

and thanks.

Definitely Nice To Know That

Sadly, we often get so used to having this software available that we tend to take it for granted, until something changes and it no longer works. THEN we get reminded what a big vote of thanks we owe TurboCCC.

EPE and Tourguide

Am planning a small trip from Des Moines IA to Los Vegas to San Tan Valley AZ and back to DSM.
When I took my trip to ST. Louis in March, I had made a TourGuide of all the historical markers within 5 miles of the road I was taking. I quickly learned that all markers are not historical. Plaques on homes designating them as on a historical registry, replicas of the Statue Of Liberty, countless war memorials and so on. I limited the Guide to something historical had to happen at or near that spot such as Bonnie and Clyde robbed a bank, Jesse James robbed a train. Indian or white men massacres, etc.
Some places had several markers close together so I had to merge two or more wave files together. The problem with that is if you drive past that spot several times, it will read it every time.
For my upcoming trip I came up with 122 markers (some wave files contained several markers) each having a wave file to be attached. I had misinterpreted about where to place the wave files for I found out that when Poi Loader writes the GPI file to your device it includes the wave file so my 50+KB GPX file became a 777 Megabyte file. I then moved my wave files to another hard drive just in case I want to expand my trip I can put it back and add more signs.
Because I have my maps and other POIs on my SD card I went and got a 32 gig card so that I do not run out of space.
The whole Idea was to learn about the area and not have to stop to read the signs and some markers are not on the road you are traveling.

.

Great to see Turbo spooled up & back in action. cool

update

he is up to V5.97 now

False Positive? Probably

I've been using EPE since the beginning and for the first time Norton has flagged it as containing a virus. Probably a false positive, but I just wanted to let others know about it.

Screen shot arrow http://i57.tinypic.com/nb7wja.jpg

I uploaded it to the Virus Total website and none of the scanners there detected a problem. Appears just to be a Norton false positive.

I've submitted the information to Norton as a false positive.

I have never used Norton.

I have been a computer user from the days of ZX80 which could be bought from the adds in magazines bought on news stands everywhere. As the computer world advanced I read that Norton Virus protection did also. It would protect a computer from known virus but also slow down your computer and sometimes keep one from legitimate sites because of their program. Because of this I always make sure that Norton is not introduced to my computer whenever I load a new program. My computer, my programs

im ready for it!

im ready for it!

Reply From Norton

I got an email response from Norton over night. They agreed it was a false detection and would be removed in a future virus definition update.

This “false positive” problem has been around here for quite some time: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41332

Thank you Gary A for taking the time to follow through with Norton.

Not Totally Resolved

I just downloaded the latest version of EPE again and Norton no longer detected the virus.

HOWEVER - Norton File Insight still flagged it as suspicious since it has no "reputation" with Norton. I submitted this to Norton.

2nd Reply

I received a 2nd reply from Norton over night. They removed that detection as well.

I downloaded it again this morning and received no alerts or alarms from Norton. smile

not exactly

You can copy and paste into EPE but it's not quite that simple. You need to also do a geo-code or get the coordinates for the address, Once you have the coordinates, (which EPE can obtain) you then need to set either a speed or proximity alert for the points. I don't believe EPE will set a proximity or distance alert for a CSV file while I do do this all the time in a GPX file. CSV files just aren't flexible enough to handle anything other than a speed alert for each point in a file.

I don't think there are any videos on using EPE. Your best bet for getting started is to read the FAQs and tutorials. You will need a text editor or spreadsheet program that can save a file as a CSV or comma separated variable file. To understand how a file is formatted, look at POI Loader's help file and then compare what you learn there to a small CSV file downloaded from POI-Factory. This would give you a known working file to examine and use as a template. Building a CSV isn't difficult once you understand the basics and get the four column format understood.
