Garmin Lifetime Maps Terms & Conditions Has Once Again Changed

They replaced the map update phrase from up to 4 times per year to "you will receive map data updates when and as such updates are made available"

Let me get this straight

They ask me to agree to their new customer terms the next time I go to download a map update, right??

So if I don't download another upgrade, I don't have to agree to the new customer terms (changing from up to four updates a year to as many as are released), right again???

Therefore if they're reducing the update cycle, I could continue to download more updates by holding off on updating.

HAHHH! That'll teach 'em!!!

Wait... what?

/just kidding. Actually I only download one or two map updates a year, anyway, usually only before a long drive.

Personally I believe in not installing every firmware and software update offered--if it ain't broke, if it's doing what it's supposed to do, don't invite trouble, is my theory. Doesn't necessarily apply to security updates in Windows which I do generally install, but for something like map updates, it does for me. We have had reports of people bricking their Garmin updating maps and firmware, IIRC.

they didn't

I think that it stinks that Garmin has changed its policy. I purchased my GPS because of the lifetime map updates(up to 4 updates per year). I do not think that it is right for them to change their policy on the people that purchased the GPS's based on the policy that was in affect at the time of their purchase. Its ok if they change their policy on new purchasers of GPS's, but their old policy should remain in effect for the older purchasers.

Why do you think they "changed their policy"? They didn't. They never stated you WOULD receive four updates a year, they stated you would receive UP TO four per year. The only thing changed was to remove the cap of four.

Were the maps better when Garmin took their time and spent a year on their map updates?

Just a thought.

There wasn't as much data included then. No junction views and the number of POI included was less (and still as hit-or-miss as they are today).

Thanks, not the answer I expected but I do remember I didn't have junction view in 2007.

That's what I've been saying too. Also, and correct me if I'm wrong, but did the terms change around the time Navteq was bought by Nokia and was transitioning to HERE? I would think the terms from Garmin were dictated by Navteq's release terms, and that would have been amended upon acquisition by Nokia.

Do you really think Garmin will now give you more then 4 updates? Most likely you will now receive 1 or 2 updates per year if any at all.

This looks to me...

that Garmin has a new legal team, and that they are just making their presence felt. Nothing has really changed, except they have more "verbal cover".

I thought that's why it was

I thought that's why it was done!!! So that Garmin would eliminate that Pesky "4" limitation, which we all know 'caps' Garmin from doing a 5th or 6th update!

Grin!

Trust?

When it comes to a company's commitment to its customers, "Trust No One".

this could be interesting??

this could be interesting??

effective, or not

I can't tell you how often things are missing, that were constructed in the last 2-3 years, even when I have the latest update. So imho if you pay $150 for a GPS, lifetime maps is neither here, nor there. Nobody verifies the delta of the update...

Quarterly updates was

Quarterly updates was probably overkill. If lifetime didn't exist how many of us would pay to update even once a year?

agree that frequent updates doesn't seem to be a big deal

I agree, I've used units with maps out of date by a year plus and never noticed much more accuracy with the models that have been updated on a regular basis.

rip off

yea trying too rip us off again

Map Updates

I'm not going to panic unless/until I know exactly how this may affect me and map updates.

For all I know, they may go to a monthly update, where you can log onto a database, and if your GPS is registered and authorized, you can get the updates regardless of how many there may be.

If they really wanted to give fewer updates, they could have anyway under the wording of their previous policy.

It may also be a case of some attorney making busy work and justifying their existence.

one update

one update a year is all I need

Well, at least I won't have

Well, at least I won't have to worry about it pulling a Google Maps/Waze and routing me through some sub-divisions that never got built out by me.

Doesn't matter To Us

Here in Canada, it doesn't matter anyways. There never seems to be any changes to the maps here. The new areas near me are still not mapped and it's been 3 years since they started building the mall and it still shows me driving in an open field on the latest update.
