POI Loader (alert distance)

Does anyone know how to check and/or change the proximity alert distance in POI Loader? I need detail steps. Thanks!

Alert Distance

Alert distance is set when you run POI Loader to install the files. If you’re using POI Loader’s defaults, the distance is about a quarter mile.

To change the alert distance, you’ll need to run POI Loader again. Inside POI Loader, you can choose either express mode or manual mode. Express mode lets you set one distance for all of the files you’re loading. Manual mode lets you specify the alert distance separately for each file.

These settings are located a few screen in, on the same page with the “Browse” button that’s asking you to select the directory that contains the files you want to install.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 and start at step 12.

Edit. Once you complete running Poi Loader. To verify you indeed do have a alert set. Go to the file you set the alert for on the gps. Select anyone of the individual pois and touch it.The screen will show the alert distance. Note if you use TourGuide the alert distance will not show.Unless a change has came out recently to change that.

alert distances

Adding to JM's instructions -

You can't check the distance set for a POI, you can only set a distance.

Thanks, Charlie, I had completely forgotten that little trick as I don't use that feature that much.

That said, we are talking about using POI Loader. POI Loader allows you to set either a speed or distance (proximity) alert. But there are other options available depending on the type of file being loaded.

CSV files can have one or the other, speed or distance. Most speed alerts are set within each individual line or record of a CSV using the '@' symbol. The speed camera file is an example. Most locations where the speed limit is known will have that value proceeded with an "@' symbol showing up as '@25' as an example. Another way to set a speed for a single file is to include a value as part of the file name. Mcdonalds25.csv would cause an alert to sound evry time you approached a McDonalds and the alert to continually repeat if you were traveling more than 25.

Certain key words will set a distance or proximity alert of 400 meters or about 1/4 mile. These keywords are all associated with traffic cameras and a complete list can be found within the help file for POI Loader.

GPX files are a slightly different animal. You can put a distance alert inside a GPX where you can't in a CSV. This is done by adding a line within each location's record stating < proximity>1200< /proximity> where the digits are the distance value specified in meters. Where POI Loader affects all the entries within a file, using GPX you can specify only certain locations within a file and not others but this requires some skill in file manipulation most don't want to go into.

With all this being stated, alerts and alert settings is probably one of the most common problems people ask for help in solving. The primary cause is having numbers in the file name. 7-11 causes problems where seven-eleven doesn't. The same can be said of your browser's file download feature automatically adding numbers to file names when you have duplicates. Downloading Red-Light Cameras.csv is fine, but if you download another copy you have Red-Light Cameras(1).csv and now the new file will have an automatic speed trigger if you are going more than 1 whatever.

charlesd45 statement is correct for the 2597. Touch i and the alert distance will be shown if it is set.
