JCV File Content

I have always thought that the Junction View data was automatically downloaded when the map was updated. However, I see regular references to a large JCV file being available.

Do I have to download and install this separately to my NUVI2555LMT?

If so, how do I install? I expect it will have to load to my SD card, since my maps now have to load there.

JCV File

I thought it was automatically updated too. I've never seen the option to download it separately.

Suggestion

When you have a question like this, one of the places to look is in out Index.
http://www.poi-factory.com/faq/index

Scroll down to "Junction View" and click that.

You will be presented at various FAQs that are pertinent.

For example, look at

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42659

You always get a small JCV file but many prefer the larger one.

Large JCV file

@GPSgeek:
Please see my post in this thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42598 which explains about the ambiguity of the term "large JCV file" and why your nuvi doesn't need it.

Yes, indeed, let's call it:

Full Coverage/Full Screen file that replaces the Partial Coverage / Full Screen file

or the FC/FSftrtPC/FSf for short twisted
Just kiddin'.

Automatically updates JCV file on my 3790LMT when map updates

The JCV file gets automatically updated every time the map has been updated on my 3790LMT with the correct version based on the Garmin model being updated.

Mine gets the file that allows the split screen JCV with the map still displayed on the left half and the JCV displayed on the right half. I have had units that had the full screen view and found that it was of little use because it was displayed for such a short period before going back to the map view quite a while before arriving at the actual turn.

The split screen view comes up about 3/4 mile before the turn and stays on till the turn has arrived giving a much longer window to glance at the JCV display when it is safer to do so.

Agree.

I agree rjrsw. The split screen view on my 3597 is much more useful than the full screen junction views on my older nuvi's. I would never replace the split screen file with the full screen file.

The split screen is worth

The split screen is worth it's weight in gold, and has saved me big time on a couple of trips.

With a SD or Micro SD card, you can err on the side of the large junction view. Better to have and not need than to ...

Might upgrade now

I didn't realize that the split screen would stay on for that long. I thought it would come on, then off like my full screen does.

Split Screen file

@jbeez60 ... If you still have the nuvi's listed in your profile (1390 LT 1450 LMT), they are not compatible with the split screen JCV file. You would want to use the full screen file. If I recall correctly, the split screen feature was introduced on the 37x0 series.

Like the split screen for the JCV.

I totally sgree that the term "Large JCV File" is confusing. "Full Screen JCV" would avoid the confusion.

Full Screen for me.

The small map on the left with split screen is useless in my opinion.

New GPS

Reading what others have stated, the people with split screens may be able to download the full screen. People with the full screen (like me), are stuck with it.
I was really thinking about a new Garmin. I think I would like the feature of the view staying on longer. Full screen or not, I wish that could be adapted to my unit.
Thanks for the heads up.

Tried it .... didn't like it!

My curiosity got the better of me so I downloaded and installed the full screen JCV file and ran a few simulations on my Nuvi 2555LMT.

What I noticed .....

- Looks good
- Comes on way too soon before the exit
- Turns off way too soon before the exit
- I don't feel I get any gain in value with the expanded view
- Not practical for my needs
- I definitely prefer the split screen!

Reversed everything to the standard way my Nuvi was setup.

If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem quickly resembles a nail. (Maslow's Hammer)

You

You have identified the 1 major problem with the full screen JCV file and that is that it turns off much to soon. I see the reason for it, as having the full screen view completely covers the map, so I suspect that it turns off quickly so the map screen is available sooner for complicated maneuvers .

What ever the reason, I much prefer the split screen views where the map is always visible.

availablity of split screen?

Does anyone think that Garmin will offer a split screen download for us owners of older units that are stuck with the full screen view? I wouldn't think so either.

Probably not

I agree with you that it's doubtful. I imagine it'd require a pretty major firmware update. There could also be processor speed issues, etc. Then, too, Garmin might think they'd be shooting themselves in the foot by doing so, since it could delay some nuvi owner's desire to buy a newer unit wink
