Got it! Thanks for the heads up. The download went flawlessly.

Wow, that's prompt

Kudos to Garmin for the large file so quickly even with many of us reserving judgement on the overall map update process for 2015.10. Gotta start the JCV download!

[Update] I tested the new large JCV on my SD-cloned nuvi 855. It works great. If anything, the photorealism may even be better than past JV images.

Many Thanks

Thank you T923347 downloading right now..Thanks

Revert back??

If installed and I don't like it, is it possible to revert back to the half screen?

Yes

Yes, as long as you don't delete the 400-ish MB default file without backing it up first, you can always replace it and remove large 800-ish MB file which returns you to a stock upgrade.

If you

If you have enough free space on your Nuvi you can just rename the 400+ split screen file and put the large file in the same folder on the device.

I have 1.4g left on both units.

EDIT: Actually, I have 2.4gig left.
I ran a sim for the large JVC. Prefer the half screen.

Why install the large JCV?

jmacri79 wrote:

The large JCV file is useful for two sets of people. My guess is that a majority of current Garmin GPS owners will not be in either set.

Group 1: These are folks (like me with my nuvi 855 and other owners of the 1xxx series) with one of the original nuvi models that offered full-screen Junction Views. Because of the limited internal storage on these models and the ever-increasing map filesizes, Garmin offers a tiny 25MB junction view file. It offers fewer Junctions to view and the views are nothing special to look at, although they work just fine. For folks with these models, they can manually download and install the large JCV file (830MB) to a SD card, disable the small file, and reap the benefit of receiving many more Views with spectacular quality.

Group 2: These are folks with newer nuvi models that offer split-screen Junction Views who prefer the older full-screen views over the split-screen.

Your nuvi 2597 makes you eligible to join Group 2, although a very large majority of Group-2-eligible folks will prefer the default split-screen views and can therefore ignore all discussions of the large JCV smile

Thank you

Thank you very much for the detailed and insightful response. The split screen doesn't bother me so I guess it is not needed

Good move

There's more to it than just "the split screen doesn't bother me" so I think you're making the right choice.

Obviously, with a split-screen, you maintain the ability to simultaneously see the map as well as the Junction View (which is good) but the View is smaller (less good if trying to read what's on the green exit sign, for example).

But your split-screen JV shows the view onscreen until you pass the View's location. With the full-screen View, the View remains on the screen for maybe 5 seconds or so, then disappears again, so you need to be quick in viewing it.

I too have an 855 and also run an 8GB SD card in it to which I have the large JCV file installed.
I prefer it over the split screen.
As we become more mature (OLDER ) it is easier to see!

I installed this larger

JCV file on my new 65LMT. It didn't work. I've since reverted to the smaller split screen file and that does work.

Should this larger JCV file work on these newer devices?

Thanks.

2015.10 large jcv file

In downloaded in my garmin Nuvi 1450LMT, but the JCV file does't work. The naming if folder, location of folder everything looks good. I had 2014 map and just updated to 2015.10 and replaced the 2015.10 jcv file from Garmin/Jcv folder. Any idea why its not showing junction view?
Thanks.

JCV

Make sure you downloaded the correct JCV file (D3060140A.jcv) for the 2015.10 map. The JCV file from the 2014.40 map will not work with the new map.

Nanpura,

Keep trying because the large JCV file will work with your nuvi 1450 and the improvement over the default JCV is simply stunning. If continued efforts fail, keep us apprised. In the off-chance that the download was corrupt, you may need to delete, then download again. What is the size of your large JCV file?

Nope

The 7x5 series doesn't support split-screen JVs. It does at least get the full-screen "large" JCV by default during map updates avoiding the need (with a nuvi 855, for instance, which gets a "small" jcv file) to manually download and copy the large JCV file after each map update.

I've seen this topic quite often and have always just skipped by it not giving it much thought.

I do have what may be a dumb question though, (I don't have the time at the moment to read through the tread) this file, it makes the semi realistic view of the road and signage fill the entire GPS screen as opposed to the half map and "view" that I am used to?

short answer

Yes.

Some of the older units also receive a file that doesn't cover all the junctions available. This file can be put on an SD card and the entire file is then available. My 885 is one of those that receives the truncated file.

Thanks, I thought that's what it was and like the split screen, guess that's why I never gave it much thought.

Should the 2460 have received the entire file?

The 2460 will receive the correct split-screen file. As with other newish Garmin GPS On The Road models, there is no need to download and install the "large JVC file" to be able to view all JVs.

The large file can be used with the 2460 but note that there's a tradeoff:

Pro - A JV display fills the entire screen making road signs larger and the sign's text easier to read.

Con - Unlike the split screen JV which displays until the desired turn is underway, the full-screen JV is displayed for just a few seconds then disappears. The full screen image obviously also removes the map during the period when the JV is displayed. When the full screen JV disappears, it can be brought back by a tapping the screen, but this extra screen tap at a time when you're negotiating your vehicle to the proper lane/turn may not be the best use of your attention at that moment.

Note that as long as you keep your 2460's default split-screen JVC file, you can try the full screen "large JVC" to see how you like it. If you don't like it, just delete the large JCV and restore the default split screen file. Of course, you should always have a full backup of your nuvi before tinkering with files.

To try the large JCV, you need to disable or move the split screen file off the nuvi. The easiest way to experiment is to rename the default split screen file from DxxxxxxxxA.JCV to DxxxxxxxxA.JCV.disabled. That's a lot easier than moving the file to a computer backup, then bring it back later.

I don't think anyone's done a survey, but my impression is that a large majority of owners of split screen JV Garmin models prefer the split screen display and can ignore all discussion of the large JVC. Although a minority, there is a group of split screen model owners who do prefer the full screen display, and these folks do go to the effort of downloading and replacing their default file with the large one with each map update. The most common reason for switching to the large full screen file is the larger text displayed on the road signs.

Thanks.....

Very helpful info.

"Large" is ambiguous.

I think our use of the term "Large JCV file" is ambiguous and causes some confusion. We probably should say "Full Coverage/Full Screen file" that replaces the "Partial Coverage / Full Screen file" downloaded to some models like the 14xx and 8x5 nuvis.

The newer units get a "Full Coverage / Split Screen" file and generally don't need any action unless the user wants the full screen views.

Don't think so.

Garmin's pre-loaded SD City Navigator map cards are not updatable and AFAIK do not contain junction view support. Maybe the Kenwood branded cards are different, but I doubt it.

Kenwood map card.

I am not surprised that you can't look at the files on the Kenwood device itself. Have you tried putting the SD card in a computer's card reader? If so, can you see the files that way?

Also, how do you update the map on the SD card? What version of City Navigator do you have on the card?

I think it is a 2014.2. You can update w/o the card from Garmin, or you can buy the sd card (no update) It is a lot cheaper to buy the card. I will try the sd card on the computer, but I did try to see it on my Garmin 2555 & there were 2 files, but they could not be opened (atleast by me)
