Google Maps tracks you. All the time. How to opt-out...

Thanks!

I knew they tracked us, but just not that much. I got rid of all the tracks and shut down the tracking feature.
Thanks for the information

Tracking

I never leave any of the location services on, and I rarely use Google maps. As well, I opt out of ads, as I never click them anyway.

Sorry Google, I won't pad your bottom line.

Why I try to avoid

Google is in the business of mining data...

Never liked Goggle for this exact reason - I try to avoid it whenever possible... but not always easy.

They all mine data. MS, Yahoo, pick one that doesn't. And, pretty much every app you use on a device (phones, tablets) do as well.

Not a problem

Since I am one of the very few people who does not have a cell phone I don't care what they do.
My wife does has an old cell phone that can only make and receive calls which we only use if necessary such as when the car breaks down we call for a tow truck.
I just wish there was an aluminum hat that looked nice enough to wear in public so that those tracking me can't find out what I am thinking by reading my mind.

There's lots of smartphone apps that collect such data.

There's lots of smartphone apps that collect such data. A dating site app, for example.

Always reporting your location back. I couldn't uninstall that quickly enough.

Congrats. You're still being tracked by cellular triangulation. Maybe put that tinfoil hat over your cellphone... grin

Not enough usage to worry about

The last time that phone was used was when coming down the mountains in Arizona June 27th telling our daughter what time we would be arriving at her house still over an hour away. After that the phone was turned off so all anyone tracking me could know is that I was on Bush Highway going south. This phone is so old that it doesn't have the GPS tracking chip in it.

off but it doesn't help

I have had it off, but as others point out, triangulation still fixes your location. Sadly, I believe it is impossible to avoiding being highly tracked, even though I try to avoid it.

If you mean powered up with a connection to the cellular network but not actively on a call as being "off" then yes, the cell company tracks your phone.

If you mean "off" as in the power was shut off, then no, they can't track you because you are not communicating with the network. A cell phone can only be "tracked" if it maintains a connection to the cellular network.

Track me!

There are over 300 million people in the US. I'm glad someone is tracking ME, otherwise, I'd feel lost in the crowd.

Spot on & to the point!

... and I am sure there are those very same that feel that if they are not advertised to then no one is interested in their money, or more specifically their credit card number(s).

This of course turns Rene' Descartes on his head: "I'm tracked & advertised to = therefor I am."

For me, I just turned off

For me, I just turned off google maps, so I'm assuming that I can't be tracked in google maps, if the application is turned off in my phone.

they are watching

the system knows where you are. your cellphone is allways triangulating your position.

no

MMtoTSS wrote:

Your cell phone doesn't have a clue about its position other than the data it receives. It's the system that triangulates (actually it is measuring the strength of the signal received from nearby towers) in order to provide you with the best connection for transmission and reception of data. Triangulation to determine position only occurs when the service is required such as when Google or one of the data mining companies requests the data FROM THE NETWORK or you place a 9-1-1 call assuming your phone lacks a GPS chip or is inside a building where GPS signals can't reach.

I fake my location

I use LocationHolic to fake my location to specific apps on my jailbroken iPhone.

So, apps like Google really don't know my correct location, if I choose.

I have a JB iPhone too for my Pioneer App Radio and this would be a great addition to my UUID faker! Enough of the big brother data mining!

Thanks.

It is unfortunate that we still have "negative optioning" when it comes to personal information.

Thankfully people find and share these items and the way to "combat" companies marketing our personal information.

I always ask any company that offers me "electronic" billing how much of a discount I will receive. You should see their faces! I do explain that they are saving money and I want my bills reduced accordingly. lol

I agree. I used to work in the business of billing and bill payments and companies spend millions doing both. The least they could do is offer a discount.

I'm like you I refuse to do electronic billing for this reason. However because of the convenience of paying online, I do that part of it.

Thanks, that's Location Services which I am familiar with setting up or turning off but not Location History. Maybe that's new to IOS7 and 8.

I have a 4S and refuse to upgrade the IOS since that trashed battery life on all of my friend's 4S and 5's. I'll be possibly going to the iPhone 6 in a couple of months after some time for users to shake things out.

That is somewhat troubling.

That is somewhat troubling.
I turned it off, then thought about it and turned it back on.

I guess at this time thought it was a lot of data, as long as it's just google and I that have access to it, that's OK right now.
