I read that Streets and Trips will no longer be updating to newer years. The 2013 will be available until the end of 2014. They will service it into 2015 sometime.
I liked it as I could print out a detail of various trips planned.
It's not just Streets and
It's not just Streets and Trips. Its business-oriented cousin, MapPoint, is also being discontinued. Autoroute as well. This tells me companies are relying on online solutions for mapping and have no interest in a static map on CD/DVD.

I use S & T all the time for work. I work for a company that does a lot of paving, it's nice to have a detailed map to hold and glance at when trying to figure out how to get around the area without running over the new asphalt.
Yes it can be done with a GPS, zooming out and whatnot, but not as quickly as glancing at the printed map.

Could you print a map with Mapquest that would work just as well?
Don't know about Mapquest but avoid Google
Could you print a map with Mapquest that would work just as well?
Mapquest? Maybe, I really don't know, not having any experience with it. But Google Maps? Unfortunately, my answer would be NOT ALWAYS. I recently worked out several route alternatives with Google maps and printed them. The first set of maps printed OK. But as I tried to print the alternate maps and the return trip maps, Google really messed up badly. It consistently took wrong images from the cache and printed them next to the proper directions. The route and maps looked correct on the screen but the wrong images were on the paper version. Lots of wasted paper and expensive ink and time. I certainly never had that problem with Streets and Trips, will be sorry to see it go.
matter of time
I'm not really surprised that S&T are going out of business. After all if you buy Garmin with maps you have option to use maps on computer as well. This map has this same functionality as S&T and is "free". And things like routes or waypoints are transferring to and from GPS without need for additional software.
It just matter of convenience. I was using S&T before i bought my GPS and it was working very well for me. But since i have Garmin map installed on my computer there was no point of buying additional map with same functionality like Garmin's map.

But as it seems Frovingslosh has experienced, printing from the internet doesn't always go as hoped for. Also I use "push pins" and other features in S & T that I don't see on Mapquest.
ETA ... another thing I like about S & T is being able to view the map satellite view (Bing) in "birds eye" view & rotating the satellite images view, haven't seen that Google Maps or Mapquest. I actually use that a lot to get a mental picture of the area, even though the satellite images are not current it has always been a big help in finding where I can make a left for instance if it's a divided highway.

Looking at map printouts and directions on paper isn't safe

In my opinion, I don't see the need to print out an entire trip on paper. You only need to know the next turn in your trip, not dozens of individual steps along the way. However, if you do need to know that, one press on a Garmin will show you the entire list and the miles between each. A dynamic Garmin with voice directions is far superior and safer than fumbling with paper while driving anyday. That streets and trips software is antiquated technology that requires a laptop and it's too bad that MS didn't come out with some sort of lifetime maps update option.
I don't share your opinion
In my opinion, I don't see the need to print out an entire trip on paper. ...
Well, that's your opinion. Mine is that when I'm on a cross country trip and I hit a major detour, I would like to have a map of the area. Last year I hit a detour around Saint Louis to avoid a closed bridge and it took me on new highways that were not even in my GPS. Not everyone has a cell plan with data that can be used in such cases, and even those who do often find that their provider doesn't have coverage in areas where they need it. If you don't like being prepared, that's fine with me. But some of us want to be prepared.
Too Expensive

The problem with that is once something is discontinued the price tends to go up, not down, because it becomes rare. I bought my copy directly from Microsoft.

I have a copy of MapPoint
I have a copy of MapPoint from 2002 that I received free for attending a Microsoft-sponsored event. Before GPS receivers became commonplace, and before Google Maps changed the way we do things, that software was fantastic for mapping out a route for a trip. Combined with a street atlas for a good overview of the terrain, I took many a vacation with MapPoint mapping.
Now I use Google Maps to get an overview, and the GPS for routing. But I should have a map or two in the car, somewhere....

Streets & Trips
I'm sorry to see it go. I've been using it for at least 10 years. I get the new version every year. I like it much better than most of the online apps.
S&T 2013 Price increase
Oct 2013 Walmart,Best Buy,Office Depot, etc. was selling S&T 2013 for around 40.00. As of the first of 2014 all these stores had discontinued sales, except for Walmart on line(you might get redirected to Amazon). The price there is about 80.00 as of 1Jul14. I found a used copy at a pawn shop...yep..pawn shop for 30.00. Beware of scratches. Your planned Columbus trip could lead you to Omaha.

Who says you need to constantly reference the printed data? Reviewing the entire route to be covered helps fix the road names in your mind so if the GPS routes different, you can question it. Knowing I'm going to take road X to point Y makes me question why the GPS would suddenly want me to take W and Z instead. Having a view of only a little over a mile of road on the GPS screen doesn't help much in checking if you are being sent on secondary roads because the distance may be shorter. The GPS doesn't know about traffic lights and signs.

now it is available, but maybe not too much longer. Microsoft and Delorme seem to the do the same thing about the same time, both discontinued their Pocket PC versions of their programs about the same time, and updates are not coming every year like they used to.

2006
The last one I bought was the 2006 with the GPS locator, $30 Canadian at the time. Used to run it on an old IBM laptop and loved the large display. Tried running it in my car for a few trips but the need to keep the laptop charged for long periods and the resulting rats nest of cables made me a GPS convert.
Still sorry to see it go though, the maps always gave good detail

I drive for a living, it's worth it to me. Even if I don't print the maps out it's still a valuable tool for me. Much bigger picture on my desktop (than the GPS) to get an idea of where I'm going. The GPS is great, but if something happened where it didn't work I have my printed views to get around as well as my knowledge before hand of where I'm going.

What really put it out of business is MapQuest. S & T is a planning tool, not a real time tool as GPS's are.

I use SA all the time. One big advantage for me is I don't have to have a screen in front of me. You can ask it questions & receive answers.

That explains that
Well that explains why I couldn't find a new version. Granted I have an old Garmin, but Streets and Trips did have some uses even with its faults(occasionally routing me 100 miles east on a west bound trip for no reason) with trip planning, and scouting out ahead where stops would be. Granted, I'm also old school and also keep an atlas with me. I dislike having to use my phone when on trips as a GPS device (with the exception of cities with recent highway changes) and find my current Garmin lacking since maps are outdated.
Interesting....
I wonder where there area of interest in the program going to be?
Streets and Trips
I still use Streets and Trips. I would print out a route in case my GPS is wrong or is unable to connect to satellites where I am going. Sad to see the software go.

I found it handy for planning long routes
I found it handy for planning long routes, especially multi-day trips. I could plan scenic trips that deviated from the quickest or shortest routes, and have S&T show me the area where I would probably be stopping for the night.
A check of motels in that area might lead to me tweaking my plans a bit, maximizing the chances of a relaxed and enjoyable time on the road, and a comfortable night off the road.

There's nothing to keep you from still using it. Maybe the POIs will get out of date, but for the most part the roads won't change that much over the next few years.
