2598lmt not compatable with garmin cyclops but IS compat. with POI Factory

Just thought I would post info on my new garmin 2598lmt. I bought this at costco and was surprised that it had no speed camera/red light cameras. It did have school zone warnings.
I set up garmin express and saw that they offered a 1 time trial offer for red light cameras. I tried to down load it but it would not down load.

I contacted garmin tech support they said:
*****
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to try and assist you.

I apologize, although, the Garmin 2013 and newer line of automotive devices are not compatible with the Cyclops Safety Camera subscription. This includes the nuvi 2598LMT device.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please let us know if we may be of further assistance.
*****

So I started looking around the internet and found POI-Factory paid the fee and it shows 2 files to down load "red light cameras" and "speed cameras"

down loaded the 2 files then used garmin POI loader
to upload the files into the 2598lmt and I was done.
I don't understand why POI-Factory has speed camera files compatable with the new garmins but garmin doesn't????
Just letting you know POI-factory data works fine with this GPS.

POI Files

Welcome

Welcome to The Factory.

Correct, the Garmin US/Canada Safety Camera file is not compatible with the nuvi models ending in 7 and 8 (and maybe some others). If you check the Compatible Devices tab on the Garmin Safety Camera page, you will see these new models conspicuously absent:

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/digital-...

What's really odd is that the Safety Camera files for regions other than US/Canada will work for you.

The POI Factory files (redlight and speed cameras) are standard Custom POI files and can be loaded to devices with Garmin's POI Loader software. Most folks here feel that The Factory's files are more accurate and current--they also can be customized with icons and audio files.

Note that if you are active on this web site, you will earn your windmill, and at that point, you will have free access to the two camera files.

Stick around--this web site has a lot to offer.

POI Factory is superior

Just want to reinforce that the files offered here (Red Light and Speed Cams) provide superior service. I downloaded the Garmin Free Trial and it wasn't bad, but IMO, the files offered here are a better choice because there is no doubt as to whether they are up-to-date. Just my 0.02 and welcome!

Not So Sure About Compatibility

Welcome to the forum

Quite frankly I don't think what Garmin stated by saying the Cyclops Safety File is NOT comaptible with 2013 and newer umits is a fact.

The Cyclops file is in .gpi format the same as other custom POI's. I see no logical reason why your 2598LMT would not read it.

I believe they just want you to buy the subscription and not make available the trial version for the newer units. Since they prevent you from downloading it there is no way for you to test.

If you had an older Nuvi (pre-2013), you could downlaod the free trial to that, then copy the file from that unit to your 2598 in the POI folder, then test it.

But it's just not worth the effort, POI Factory's files are better and you can create your own custom icons and sounds, the Cyclops file only has a ping sound when it approaches a safety camera.

Be advised the RedLight and Speed Camera Files are updated every Wednesday here at the Factory.

In addition, the retail Cyclops Safety Cameras have a fixed alert distance of only 1/8 mile (660 ft.) which is far too short of an alert distance, IMO.

more info on 2598lmt

testing the redlight camera warning... it gives 2 bings and I noticed that the red light warning shows on the top of the garmin screen gray background bar with white letters.
I would rather have a red background with white letters.
Checking around I found that the colors are a result of garmin and can't be changed.
It is OK the way it is but it would be better if I could select the background color.
I also noticed the warning for school zones is orange background with white letters.
Reading info on poi-factory and the internet it seems that different garmin models will display different colors.

Even more strange - in the UK the Cyclops Safety Cameras are pre-loaded onto the product. Garmin just has not got its act together for the US market

Welcome to The Factory. Yes, it is odd. From a quick scan of the various Cyclops files, it appears that only the US/Canada file is not compatible with these select nuvi models.

2598 redlight camera

if Garmin RLC is not working , what is the fix?, I just bought one

Use the ones here

The redlight and speed camera POIs offered here at The Factory will work. There is no way to get the US Cyclops files from Garmin to work on a 2598.

RLC's

In my area I have the RLC warning going off in a number of locations, but I'll be darned if I can see any RLC. I have even walked one intersection and examined every blinking pole and can not find a RLC.

I really have no need for RLC warnings since I am very alert to clues that the light will change. Such as the pedestrian signal starts a countdown with numbers. When the light changes to amber I DO NOT hammer the accelerator, AMBER really means STOP! Unless you are within a few feet and I mean A FEW of the white line.

Cyclops not compatible with 2598

We have had our 2598 for a week and find it works fine, but would rather have higher resolution.

I bought Garmin Cyclops Safety camera subscription and found out a few minutes later it is not compatible to our 2598.

Google search found me back to POI Factory where we belonged for many years, but I lost track and did not consider it.

Now my job is to get Garmin to credit us or the subscription we can't use.

We will donate to POI Factory for something better.

I need to tranfer #s from my windows phone to nuvi2598. I paired it but no number tranfer

PoI are just that.....

There is much said about why Cyclops works with some GPS and some not. The main reason is that the Cyclops data is NOT PoI (a point of interest) wheras the PoI Factory data are just that; PoI's that indicate the location of speed cameras etc.

The main differences are that Cyclops will not give you a false indication when, for example, you are driving on the opposite carriageway and the camera is monitoring the other-side of the road. They are DIRECTION SENSITIVE.

Also the icons or warnings don't appear on the map unless you approach one at a speed close to the speed-setting on the camera, no map cluttered with pointless icons. They are SPEED SENSITIVE.
The Cyclops data doesn't rely on 'users input' to update the database, and are not user-editable They are MORE RELIABLE.

You may indeed be very familiar with every RLC / speed camera In your local area, the POI files here really come into play when a new camera goes up in your area that you weren't aware of and when you travel to distant places.

A long time ago in a camera happy place far, far away.. I was piloting my star chaser... And I was alerted to three cameras, on three streets within seconds of each other. one warning was indeed for me and the other two, while the cameras existed, weren't on my path of travel but were within my proximity settings. Took me a few try's to sort out what was causing the multiple alerts. Have you looked around on other near-by streets for these phantom cameras?

If Garmin Was Smart

they'd offer to purchase use of the POI Factory's Red Light & Speed Cameras - minimum effort, happy purchasers of their equipment.

Fred

Not with the same status

I am sure If Garmin had this web site they will not allowed no one to get those POI for free or just posting a few messages a week to hold an active account.

I am sure they will charge $$ everyone to be able to use and download those POI..

Let me begin by saying that I have no experience with Cyclops (aka Garmin Safety Cameras).

I wanted to explore some of the comments.

If you go to Garmin and download a copy of the safety cameras to a device, you will find in the POI directory three new files
safety_camera_us_canada.gma
safety_camera_us_canada.gma
safety_camera_us_canada.unl

If you go on your device (I am using a 2595) to Settings > Navigation > Alerts > Proximity Alerts > Alerts, you should find two entries
Garmin Safety Cameras
Custom POIs

My understanding of ".gpi" is that the extension represents "Garmin Points of Interest". There seems to be two types, based on how Garmins suggests that one delete .gpi files.

Quote:

There are two different ways to remove Custom Points of Interest (POIs) from a Garmin device. The best method will depend on the way that the Custom POIs were originally loaded onto the Garmin unit. If the Custom POIs came from a *.gpi file, the Manual Delete option will be needed. If the Custom POIs came from a *.gpx or *.csv file and used POI Loader to install them, the POI Loader delete method will be needed. Since both methods can be used to load Custom POIs, both methods may need to be used to remove the Custom POIs especially if one method does not completely remove all of the Custom POIs from the Garmin unit.

My conclusion is that the Garmin Safety Cameras are a proprietary .gpi file that will not be deleted by POI Loader and therefore must be manually deleted. I tested this on the 2595 and POI Loader did remove those .gpi files that I had previously loaded using POI Loader or that I had copied to the devices (having created the .gpi files on my computer - as allowed by POI Loader), but left the three Garmin Safety Camera files.

So, my conclusion is that both the Garmin Safety Cameras and the poi-factory camera files are Points Of Interest.

I hope someone else will chime in on the Directionality and Sensitivity of Garmin Safety Cameras vis-a-vis the poi-factory files because I have no experience.

I do wonder about the comment on Reliability. As I read the advertising on the Garmin Safety Cameras, it says

Quote:

Safety camera updates link your device to the Cyclops database, which is maintained daily and contains information about fixed, average speed, mobile, variable, temporary/roadwork, red light and red light speed cameras.
...
With our 1-year subscription, get unlimited updates during the year to help you travel safely and legally while avoiding penalty points, fines and higher premiums.

This, of course, means that you could do a daily check to see if any new cameras had been added by Garmin. If done, this might mean that Garmin Safety Cameras would be more "reliable" but that may be splitting hairs. The poi-factory files are updated once a week.

Do we know if garmin itself

Do we know if garmin itself is going to be supporting the new gps's at anytime with cyclops red light files ?

my guess

My guess is that Garmin has dropped Cyclops due to poor subscription rates. With the same data available from multiple sources without cost, the cost of preparing the file just wasn't being recovered by the number of subscribers.

I tried the Cyclops data but didn't find it very useful, mostly because of the fixed alert distance with no way to change it. I certainly wouldn't waste my money on it.
