POI-Loader and Win8

I have a new Win8 PC and am trying to get POI-Loader to work. It's spitting up the error message that it can't find C:\Programs Files\Garmin\SOX.EXE

There was no Garmin folder so I created one under Progam Files and put SOX.EXE in it. I also tried putting it in the POI-Loader folder.

Any suggestions?

SOX

Just copy the SOX.EXE file into the POI loader folder!

Download again

I would suggest downloading POI Loader
http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

and then install it. It should install itself into C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader

Now download sox.exe from
http://www.poi-factory.com/images/csv/sox-14-0-1.zip

Unzip sox.exe and then copy sox.exe into
C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader

Let us know what happens

sox.exe

Go to Program Files (86),Garmin Folder,Poi Loader folder and put sox.exe in the folder with Poi Loader exe. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

Note. There is a Program File and a Program File (86) . For Windows 8 you want the Program File (86) .

POI-Loader and Win8

Thanks guys, I did that (put it in the POI-Loader folder) after putting it in the Garmin folder didn't work. Perhaps I didn't make it clear. And that isn't working.

You have to start out with

You have to start out with Program Files (86) not Program File. Once you click on Garmin Folder then you click on Poi Loader Folder. You will find Poi Loader exe there. That is where the sox.exe goes.

I have Windows 8.1. When you click on My Computer look for Program File (86).

And jgermann, yes, that's exactly what I did.

Yes, I truncated the 86 in my original post for brevity, but yes, that's where POI-Loader is installed.

Error message

I've not worked with a Win8 PC, but in earlier Windows versions, a missing sox resulted in no installed Custom Audio but the running of POI Loader did not offer a missing sox.error message. Can some other Win8 users with success with Custom audio POIs confirm that a missing, wrong version, wrong installed location sox does now give an error message as is being reported here?

Also, can you tell us if you'd had success loading custom audio to your devices with your previous computer, Sixeye? This can help us know you have the right version of sox.exe, wav files in the proper format, etc.

Are you clicking on the Poi Loader folder.?Then do you see Poi Loader exe?

A little confuse when you are stated that you didn't have a Garmin Folder on your original post.

Clarification

Sorry. To clarify, there was no Garmin subfolder in the Program Files folder. So I created one and put SOX.EXE there since the error message said it was looking for it there. That didn't help.

I did find a Garmin folder and a POI-Loader subfolder in the Program Files (x86) folder. So I put SOX.EXE both in the Garmin folder and in the POI-Loader subfolder. Neither of those helped either.

For what it's worth, Garmin Express is working fine and is currently installing the latest map as I type this.

You need to remove and

You need to remove and reinstall the latest Poi Loader. Make sure you install the sox.exe on the link I posted.
Sure you are using same files that you had for your 265. So the location of the sox.exe should be the problem.

Sheesh, I don't know why that worked this time. I was in fact using that same version of SOX.EXE. Oh well, computers. You can never outguess them. Thanks for your help. I now have the updated POI's loaded on the GPSr. Appreciate your time.

Glad it worked out. Enjoy

Glad it worked out. Enjoy Windows 8 and make sure to get the 8.1 update if needed. I am very happy with the new Windows but there are different opinions on it. Once you get past the learning curve of the new Windows it is a breeze.

Yes, I've had 8.1 (but not the update) for about two months now. I instantly installed Classic Shell so that I could have my WinXP desktop and not have to deal with that Aero abomination. With Classic Shell, you can easily switch back and forth to/from Aero, so I can learn it on my own schedule. smile

I have had the Classic Shell

I have had the Classic Shell for some time now. Set my laptop to default to the desktop. You can also get rid of the nag sign in screen too.

Classic Shell

You are using Classic Shell 4.1 and Win8.1 Update? I see now on the Classic Shell web site that 4.1 supports 8.1U. I was waiting to confirm that before doing the update. I'm cautious on updates these days. They can goof things up at times.

Right the 4.1 and 8.1. No

Right the 4.1 and 8.1. No problems at all .
