Map on SD?

Last night when I updated my map, the unit told me that it didn't have enough memory, only enough for US, not the NA. If I wanted to install the whole NA map, I had to use the SD card (bigger than 2.2 GB). Therefore, I used the 4gb.

1. I thought when updated new map, the new map would replaced the old map. Why not enough memory happened here?

2. Is there an option to chose between two maps when in use? (the one on my unit vs. on SD card)

Thanks

Map on SD.

How did you install the map on SD? Garmin Express? Garmin Map Updater? Cloning?

1) There is not enough memory for the new map because the map files grow in size with each update. With Garmin Express or Garmin Map Updater, normally the old map in internal storage would be deleted as part of the update, even if the new map is installed to SD. Some users have had issues with this where some or all of the old map files did not get automatically deleted. If that happens, it is best to manually delete the old map files.

2) If you really do have the new map installed on SD card and the old map in internal storage, you should be able to revert to the old map by simply rebooting the nuvi without the SD card.

Note that if you reboot with the old map, there may be some file version mismatches like Junction View and Traffic Trends. So it is possible that some functions will not work correctly using the old map.

I used Garmin Map Updater. This is the second year I updated it.

1. So, with the SD in with the new map, that would be first pick when the gps is on? And the gps only reverts the old map in internal storage when there is no SD card?

2. How do I delete the old map in the internal storage?

3. I already dl the new map on the sd card. Can I dl the NA map again on the internal storage after I deleted the old map? Would garmin let me dl again? I hate to store the NA map on SD card.

OK, if you let GarminMapUpdater install the new map to your SD card, it should have deleted the older City Navigator map that was in the nuvi storage. If you go to MyMaps or MapInfo on your nuvi, what maps do you see listed? If you only see 2015.10 North America, your older maps are gone. Report back and we can look into this further if needed.

There's really no problem having the map on the SD card, especially since a single map file will contain all of North America. I expect that you could install less than all of North America to the nuvi internal storage, but what do you gain? If you do have two copies of 2015.10 available (internal plus SD), I suggest making sure that only one is checked and active on your MyMaps or MapInfo page.

Help us help you by giving more information of what your question is. Sorry, but I cannot relate what asked to anything specific.

My experience when updating

My experience when updating 50LM's is that when Express installs the newer map on the Micro SD card,it automatically deletes the older map from the system.

At some point Garmin doubled the memory in the 40 and 50 series to 4gb so owners of those newer units do not need a microSD card to update to the newer maps.

File extension

Read this and you'll be all set wink

Ok, I checked in mymap and saw only NA map 2015. So this is new map.

I tried to locate the old map on internal storage but couldn't find it. Could it be deleted?

The reason I like the map on the unit rather than on the sd because it seems the sd card easy to fail. Let's just say the sd card later fail, can I dl the 2015 map again on the new sd card?

That's good and as we expected since that's what GarminMapUpdater (and Garmin Express) are supposed to do. If you don't see the old 2014 map in MyMaps, then it was deleted. (In your nuvi, it would have been 2-4 files named gmapprom and ending in .img, .unl and possibly a .gma or .sum.) You can also confirm that the large old map file has been removed from the nuvi by checking its free space when connected to a computer. With the old map still there, you may have only had 100MB or so free. You may find closer to 1 to 2GB free now. The map files themselves end with .img. You should see a very large gmapsupp.img on your SD card now which is the 2015 map, plus see on the nuvi the basemap and timezone map, gmapbmap.img and gmapTZ.img and no others unless you remember installing other supplemental maps.

Yes, if the SD card failed, or its files corrupted, you can always redownload and install the current map on another SD card--or even choose less than all of North America and install a smaller map to the nuvi.

Hmm, I never thought of this, but you could buy a 2nd SD card now and copy all the current SD card's file to it. In the event the orginal SD failed, you could power down the nuvi, swap cards, and be up and running with the current map again instantly, with no need to download again.

Backup

True, but everyone should still have a backup of the unit and their SD card.

Having an SD backup will become more prominent now that the maps have gotten so big and HAVE to be placed on SD cards.
