Saved Favorites I deleted will not stay deleted

I have a Garman 3590 LMT. When I delete a favorite, or favorites they wont stay deleted. Whenever I reboot, the files are all back again. I deleted them in edit mode, where I put a check mark beside the ones I wanted gone, but they came back. So, I tried deleting them one at a time by selecting one individually. Like I said, they are gone until I do a reboot. I like this unit, but this is sorta, to very irritating! I dont want favorites to any place I know I will never, ever go back to. Anybody else have this problem, or better yet, a solution? Thanks!

I had the same experience

last week with a 265wt that I sold. I wanted to clean out all previous data and did several hard resets....data kept re-appearing after a re-boot. I even used the other method of deleting all favorites and had the same result.

I ended up syncing the nuvi to my computer and maually deleted POIs, .gpi and .gpx files, IIRC. I re-booted and things were cleaned up. Three new locations had been added to "My Favorites" and those were the three Garmin locations.

Connect unit to computer. Go to the GPX folder. If you find anything other then current.gpx with the GPX extension delete them. Make sure to make backup copy first. Disconnect from computer and reboot GPS. Now delete the favorites manually as you posted. If you have a Mac before dis-connecting GPS from computer empty your trash can.

Had same problem.

What I did was to copy the Current.gpx (from the GPX folder of your GPS) to the computer and edit out the favorites you don't want. Save the edited file as temp.gpx and copy to the GPS and delete or rename the Current.gpx.

I guess I did it the hard way. grin

deleting favs

I thought about connecting it to the computer to delete them, but this is not the way we should have to do it. There is some bug in some of these units that is making this happen.

Have a look in the GPX folder on the 3590. If there are other GPX files in that folder other than current.gpx then that is what is causing your problem.

Everytime you boot the Nuvi it looks for locations in GPX files on the device and if it finds any they are placed as favorites/saved places inside the current.gpx file. So the trick to getting rid of them is to first delete all the .gpx files, then delete the individual favorites/saved places as you've done, and then reboot your Nuvi. With no favorites in memory and no gpx files to be read into memory, you should now have no favorites listed (execpt for the 3 default Garmin locations).

Thanks all!

It worked. As long as I have had a GPS, I should have known to look at this before asking for help. Anyhow, much THANKS to all of you who helped me with this! I had 3 slightly varied named instances of Current.gpx that were rewriting my deleted favorites.

Well, "King, this case is closed"!

If the suggestions gave do not solve your problem.Using MapSource and a hard reset to delete favorites should do the trick.

1.Connect the GPS to your computer's using the USB Cable.
2.Open up MapSource program.
A. click Transfer.
B.Select receive from device.
3.Make sure Waypoints are checked.
4.Click Receive.
5.Once received delete the favorites not needed showing in MapSource. Then click on File and then select Save As.
6.Choose the location on your computer to save this file and re-name it temp.gpx .
7.Click Save.
8.Dis-connect GPS from the computer.
9.Do a hard reset on your GPS to remove all favorites.Per Garmin Support.
Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil.
Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the device ON.
Release the power button when the device powers ON.
You will see a new message: "Do you really want to erase all user data?".
Remove your finger from the touch screen when this message displays.
Touch Yes.
10.Re-connect GPS to your computer.Place the temp.gpx into the GPX folder next to the current.gpx file.
11.Reboot GPS.

That seems to be a lot of work to just remove what I suspect to be a file somewhere. But thanks anyway. I will give it a try when I get a chance

Searching

jale wrote:

This problem is usually caused by having a .gpx file (other than the expected current.gpx) somewhere on the unit or the SD card.

Whenever the unit finds a .gpx file which it has not "previously considered", it adds the contents of that file to the "Favorites" in its internal memory and writes the combined results out to "current.gpx".

I have not tested this, but it seems to me that it would do the same thing after a "Master Reset" wherein your "Favorites" are deleted BUT then Garmin adds three of its own Favorites - namely 3 Garmin locations. That is, it would look for .gpx files to add to "Favorites". This would result in the contents of any found .gpx file plus the 3 Garmin locations becoming the new Favorites. I think this would be the case whether or not MapSource was involved.

The way I would search for extraneous .gpx files would be to use Windows Explorer "search" feature which, for me, is found in the very upper right corner of the dialog window whenever I have some "Drive" or "Folder" selected. If I were looking at my "C: Drive", it would say "Search Local Disk (C)". In the "Search" box, I would type ".gpx" (without the quotes) and let Explorer find all instances of files that end in .gpx - one of which will be "current.gpx".

@jale - we would be interested in how you have searched for a file to delete, because, based on what you describe, there must be one or more there.

Right it would be a little extra steps to do but you said you tried all the suggestions above.I suspect you do have a gpx file in the GPX folder being overlooked. When you transfer waypoints from Google,Mapsource and etc.It creates a gpx file along side the current.gpx file. When you boot up the gps loads that transfered file into the curren.gpx.The problem is that transfer file stays there unless you delete it after it loads to the current.gpx .What happens is some where down the line you want to delete some favorites. You do it by the manual. You have forgotten about the file or files located with the current.gpx.Even though you deleted the favorites the extra files re-load back to the current.gpx on re-boot.If the transfered waypoint have not been deleted.

Once you connect the gps to the computer and open up the gpx folder. You should spot them.Anything other then the current.gpx with the gpx extension can be deleted.Make a back up first before deleting anything.

I'll let you know

I thought I used all available search methods in XP to find that extra gpx file and never found any. I'm not near my GPR right now so it is still in the to-do list, but I'll let you know what I do/did/find out when I get to that.

All gpx files on the Garmin will be installed

Use Windows Explorer, search the GPS and the SD card for *.gpx as anywhere a gpx file is saved it will be installed every time you power up your device. Backup & delete those gpx files Windows Explorer finds.

I HAD THE SAME

Problem several years back. Some one suggested that I delete the Favorites one by one. I am trying to locate the reply that I received on how to do that, and it worked. As soon as I find it or remember I will post it.
