Two huge img files

Does anyone else have about 5GB of two IMG files on their Garmin?

I have in the 3790 system folder a
gmapprom.img 2.312.576 kb file

Then there is a MAP folder I have never seen before

City Navigator North America NT 2015.2 2.312.576 kb
and a
ac8f8cf6-0ff5-4c92-846b-2847430f3ae6.gma 3 kb

I have two previous backups for the 3790 and there is NO seperate MAP folder in them.

Any idea why? This is obviously since the update to 2015.2

The one

The one in the Map folder shouldn't/doesn't need to be there. How it got there, who can say. I"m surprised that the Nuvi even had enough free space to have both of the .img files on the same unit. You must not have much free space.

If your only using City Navigator NA maps, you don't need anything in the Map folder, or even need the Map folder on the Nuvi as long as the gmapprom.img and related files are in the .system folder. I'd MOVE the contents of the Map folder to my computer, make sure the Nuvi still works alright, and then delete the moved files from my PC.

Thanks

t923347, I will follow you advice and remove/copy the file out of there.

Even now I have 1.94GB free, but probably partially because I have the large JCV file on an SD card.

Now I wonder if that might be the reason the 3790 has been kinda sluggish lately?

Followup

Removed the extra MAP folder and my map was only the basemap on the GPS.
I used Mapupdater to fix and it told me it will install the file and that I will have 1.92GB free, just like before.

Mapupdater recreated the Map folder again.

I wonder what would happen if I removed the file in the system folder as well as the MAP folder and then used Mapupdater if it would just install into the system folder only?

Very

Very strange. I guess it wouldn't hurt to do what you suggest and may well clear the problem.

Something is wrong with what MapUpdater is doing on your Nuvi as it should normally just replace the gmapprom.img, gmapdem.img, gmap3d.img and gmaptz.img, and there related small .unl, .gma files with new files of the same name. Also the normal split screen JCV file would be replaced. All of this would happen within the .system folder. and no Map folder would be created or needed.

I wonder, have you ever attempted to "clone" your 3790 using alanb's cloning process? If you have, have you used the SD card in your Nuvi to perform the "clone"? If so have you deleted the gupdate.gcd file from the SD card?

I really don't know whether this would have anything to do with your current issue but maybe before you try and reinstall the maps again you should pull the SD card, delete the Map folder, and if you want, delete the gmapprom.img file from the .system folder. MIght as well remove as many variables as possible.

Follow up update

Success in a way.
I removed the Map folder, copied and deleted the
gmapprom.img.

Then used GE to connect to Garmin and it downloaded six new or replaced files including the gmapprom.img file as well as a smaller JCV file.

Done away with that one. But one thing GE-Garmin did was to install a blue vehicle icon and removed my original grey car icon. I can not find the
d a m n blue vehicle icon anywhere. Its not in the vehicle folder.

EDit: Re-installed my icon from a stored file, all A1 now.

Darn frustrating sometimes with Garmin downloads.

t923347, thanks for trying to help.

On the SD card is the large JCV file which I do not want to take up extra space in the GPS.

Add edit Thurs Oct 2nd: Since having removed the Map folder the GPS seems to react faster. Must be that the GPS was searching through two of the same files!

Because Malaqueman had a backup, he was able to get back the car icon he preferred.

Have YOU backed up your device?

"Original" grey car

@Malagueman, I was interested in the comment that the "grey car" was "Original".

To the best of my knowledge by looking at manuals, the blue car icon is the default. Did one or both of your units come with a grey car, or was that something that you added?

I raise the question because I was wondering whether or not map updates impact the map vehicle. I have never changed my icon so have no experience.

In the /Garmin/Vehicle folder on my 765, I have the following .srf files: beachball, boots, car_blue, crow, euro_blue, triangle_blue, and truck_blue.

In the /Vehicle folder of my 2595, I have the following .srf files: beachball, boots, car_blue, crow, euro_blue, Navigon, pedestrian_1pc_blue, pedestrian_2pc_blue, triangle_blue, and truck_blue.

For what it's worth, I looked in the GarminDevice.xml files on both units and found these items of interest

On 765 in GarminDevice.xml
<DeviceExtension
<Ifix>630783088</Ifix>
<ActiveItem>
<Name>Vehicle</Name>
<Location>
<Path>Garmin/Vehicle</Path>
<BaseName>car_blue</BaseName>
<FileExtension>srf</FileExtension>
</Location>
</ActiveItem>
</DeviceExtension>

On 2595 in GarminDevice.xml
<DataType>
<Name>Vehicle</Name>
<File>
<Specification>
<Identifier>SRF</Identifier>
</Specification>
<Location>
<Path>Vehicle</Path>
<FileExtension>srf</FileExtension>

Lost vehicles

I added a custom vehicle to my GPS devices and also have had issues where an update deleted my custom vehicle. It wasn't just a nuvi switch of vehicle, it was a file deletion of my custom vehicle that caused me to have to reinstall it.

I don't remember now which nuvi had this issue and I don't remember if it was a map, firmware or other update that caused the loss.

I can say that it's unlikely to have occurred with Garmin Express since I try so hard to avoid that program. Therefore it was probably an issue for me with GarminMapUpdater or WebUpdater.

Thanks

@CraigW, thanks for this info. I do not recall any discussion of this problem before (although I may have missed it) but when two people have a similar problem, it is worth pinning down.

It seems that Malaqueman had the problem with GE but not with MapUpdater. Odd!

Probably note for a YEAR

Ok, OK, I better back up again. Things may have changed from a year ago. smile

I always have two backups, previous and current. Learned the hard way long ago when I too was one of those dummies who erased the whole GPS by having an itchy finger and spending hours to recover all the deleted files with a recovery program. This was long before I had ever heard of POI factory, so I was completly on my own.

Thanks guys, the knowledge here is invaluable.

Oh BTW: The icon is not a Garmin icon but from a source I found some years ago. It is an icon of the car I drive,

I suspected that was the case - especially the years ago part. So - the question is whether you have ever lost it on some other update in the past. Sounds like you have not.

No have not

No this is the first time the icon was ever removed, but not by me.

Also the reason I started this thread that for some unknown reason GE installed the IMG file twice in my Nuvi.

If this remains a one-time event, I think we can all find better things to do than figure out why you received two map files.

But if this crops up again, t92's earlier comment wondering if you ever "cloned" a map update—or if you used MapInstall, etc. may be worth pursuing to figure out what's causing the 2nd map file to occur. There could be some odd (and unexpected-by-Garmin) action you made that caused this to occur.

A map update adding a Map folder to your GPS doesn't seem that strange to me. But a map update putting the desired new map file (gmapprom.img) in the .System folder and a 2nd copy with a different name in the Map folder is strange, especially since you wrote later that your nuvi apparently used the City Navigator North America NT 2015.2.img file rather than the gmapprom.img file when both were present.

Before concluding that Garmin Express is the culprit in installing the map twice, we should look to any actions you took before seeing the duplicate map: clone, use of MapInstall, map update from files on your computer from an earlier update, Basecamp action, Mapsource action, etc.

The one thing that seems especially odd to me is the name of the file in the Map folder. The file name City Navigator North America NT 2015.2.img makes me wonder if this could be a Basecamp or Mapsource issue. I'm not sure about BaseCamp, but I know that Mapsource has options to "Send to or Receive from Device" any of the following: Maps, Waypoints, Tracks, and Routes. Usually "Maps" is unchecked. If Maps is checked and you click send to device, then I can imagine a 2nd copy of a map, called City Navigator North America NT 2015.2.img, to be installed to the Map folder of your nuvi from your computer.

Do you ever Receive from or Send to your nuvi data using BaseCamp or Mapsource? If so, could "Maps" have been checked?

[I hope this all makes some sense.]

I'm

I'm not sure that we ever attempted to name Garmin Express as the culprit here as Melaqueman initially stated that he used MapUpdater to install 2015.20.

It is still a mystery to me how he got a gmapprom.img file in it's proper location (.system) and what seems to be a complete duplicate of it in the Maps folder. Having that file get named City Navigator North America NT 2015.2.img is strange but one of the advantages of the Map folder as you can place map files in there and name them whatever you want, and the Nuvi will happily use them.

Personally I use alanb's clone procedures and place my map files in the Map folder on an SD card. Once on the card, I rename the gmapprom files to the name of the map update, for example, the current files on the card are:

2015.20.img
2015.20.unl
2015.20.gma

In addition I put the JCV file in the /Garmin/JCV folder on the card. Everything works just fine.

Garmin Express / MapUpdater

When Garmin Express or MapUpdater detects that there is insufficient internal storage, it prompts you to install a SD card, then proceeds with the install to the SD. On these newer units that support the \Map folder with flexible naming, what folder on the SD does Express or MapUpdater put the map files, and how does it name them? I know what happens on the older nuvi's that install the gmapsupp.* files in the \Garmin folder, but I don't know what happens with the newer units because it has never happened on my 3597.

No cloning ever

Never done any cloning.
Only possible I can see is that I had to do about 3 runs at installing 2015.2 using GE.

At the current size of the IMG file and some upsizing each time I should be good for a few years installing in the 3790 itself without resorting to using the SD card.

My re-install was using Mapupdater!

Maybe It this happened to others, but they did not query it or better yet did not or do not know they have duplicate files.

The only reason I found it is that as I am want to do, I was snooping around the GPS with Windows Explorer !!!
