GE Forced Update to 3.1.7

I just tried to open GE version 3.1.6 and was met with a dialog that stated it had to close due to a required update. I read the change file for that update and it appeared that none of the issues in anyway effected my use of GE. If you say no to the install, GE will not run. When did Garmin start "forced" updates?

I generally believe that if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Since it didn't address the Extras Garage Content issue, I didn't see a reason to update a couple of days ago, but GE still worked. An additional part of the reasoning was because support indicated that that particular issue was not related to GE. Anyway, today the update is mandatory.

Anyone else having this forced update issue?

EDIT: I succumbed to the "forced update". When I closed GE and attempted to start the app it automatically went into the update mode - grrrr. OK ... why not. I checked my settings in GE and both boxes are unchecked regards to starting and auto update. GE starts anyway, and update was checked for and proceeded to install. So what good are the settings?

BTW ... Extras does not show the Garage Contents, again. Then there is the perpetual update showing for German et al digital traffic update - even after update. Garmin knows about this issue, too.

These perpetual updates (already updated yet continue to show as an available update) have been around for many years now, even back when only WebUpdater was available for updating system software, voices, etc. (way before GE).

Traffic update

The traffic update isn't a GE only problem, on my 2450 Webupdater always says that update is available. I've installed it countless times through Webupdated and Garmin Express and it keeps showing up. I just ignore it now.

I run GE version 3.0.9.0 but

I run GE version 3.0.9.0 but have had to go into settings and select the option "Automatically search and download updates" to Never. Otherwise every attempt to enter GE causes the update process to start, which ultimately crashes due to the Garmin Core Update Service not running. Having said that Windows reports it is running and started. The crashed attempt to install 3.1.7 results in the former verson 3.0.9.0 becoming inoperative.

I don't know if I can post a link to another site but GE 3.0.7.0 for Mac is available. I don't know how it's different from 3.1.7.0. If you're using a PC, the link won't matter to you.
