POI Alert help

Looking for some help. I don't seem to be able to create an alert POI and have my desl760 alert when it should. I have alerts turned on from Custom POI's. Found this site

https://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pagepoi.htm

. and tried his simple home test, Did everything to the "tee". Used his files with my coordinates. Used POI loader in manual and set alert distance of 3000 ft. After loading, the GPS shows me at my home location, but does not give me an Alert as he said it should.

Anyone able to offer suggestions? I have a custom POI file of FlyingJ truck-stops that I want to alert me when I approach one on the road. I can't even get a 1 liner to work (lol).

I suggest you start here

Gary Hayman's pages haven't been updated for several years so some of the information may not be correct for newer models. I suggest you look at this link.

.wav and sox.exe

Give us some information on your "Alert" file.

Where did you get your sox.exe file? Should have come from
http://www.poi-factory.com/images/csv/sox-14-0-1.zip

In what directory does your sox.exe file reside?

I have tried all that has

I have tried all that has been suggested here. Sox is where it should be, used .wav instead of .mp3, .bmp is correct size. Still no alert. Is there a place I could upload my files for testing by one of you, or would one of you be so kind as to let me email the small files to you for testing. I am about to go ballistic(lol). This is driving me nuts.

How? Where?

I assume you have a PC versus a Mac.

How did you test out your files? I assume you went a mile or so from your home and came back.

I assume you are not plagued by double extensions. See first entry in http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin/problemsolver

I assume each of the three files has identical character strings to the left of the (single) extension.

I assume the sox.exe is v14.0.1 and resides in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader

We will get you there. We need to exhaust all of the possible problem areas and the more excruciating detail you can give us, the better we can help.

All of your assumptions are

All of your assumptions are correct, except the 1st one. I set the coords in my test file to my home coords. I now make the Assumption. I turn on the GPS after loading the POI file. Tell it to display map and it show me that I am home. It does not alert that I am within the alert limit set into the files, which is .9 miles. I assume it should Alert, since I am within the set alert limits in the file..

Bad Assumption?

I can't imagine having to go drive around after each file load to see if the alerts are working?

I am using a PC....

Also, for what it is worth. I can call up the POI file as a goto place and it show me everything is correct in the file including the .9 mile alert.

Too far off the road?

If the coordinates for home are too far off the road you will not get an alert. For test purposes use a location just a few feet off the road.

Thanks...My home is located

Thanks...My home is located 200 feet off the main road. I used the coords from the gps to build the poi file.

Good point

A good point. If the home is 75 feet from the road via driveway and the POI was set to the home's location, the alert will probably not occur. Best to set the POI coords to the junction of final street and driveway--within 10-20 feet of the final roadway.

I also worry about expecting a POI alert when you start at the POI location. As already suggested, I'd test the POI file and alert by driving a few miles from home, then create a route back home to see if it alerts.

Side distance

The side distance is little documented by Garmin. Proximity alerts do not operate by a radius. They are along a roadway. Proximity POIs up to 50 feet off the center of the roadway on the right or on the left will give an alert. (Some have said up to 98 feet or 30 meters off the roadway.)

I am going to load my files

I am going to load my files and take this thing for a spin tomorrow and see if it will work while traveling on the road...

Use Google Earth and get the coordinates for a location on the road in front of your house then retry it.

1.Download Google Earth at http://earth.google.com/
2.Go to Tools on Google Earth and select Options. Select Decimal Degrees under Show Lat/Long.
3.You will notice on the map moving the cursor will show coordinates in Decimal Degrees at bottom of map screen.
4.Put in your location to search.Moving cursor to location you want will show you the coordinates.

Another way.

Since you are in learning mode, I suggest that you try using Extra POI Editor (EPE) which was written by one of our members TurboCC.

The first step will be to download the .exe file from
http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor#Extra_POI_Ed...
(scroll down about two thirds of the web site page to get to the downloads)

Install EPE by doubleclicking on the .exe file you downloaded.

Next read the excellent FAQ by Box Car at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33782

Now, open EPE and "Add New POI" by clicking on the purple link in the top left pane.

In the POI Edit dialog, put "Home" in the name field.

Fill in your home address etc.

Then follow the arrow next to the address fields and click on the Geocoding button.

Wait while EPE translates your address and finds it on a Google Map (which it will show to you).

Zoom in until you can see your approach road and driveway. Move the market to that point. Press the "Grab" button on the top line and the coordinates of that location will be determined for you.

I would just save this file as a .gpx (EPE's default)

It was mentioned earlier that the location of POI for "along the route" alerts must be within 30 meters (note that the metric system is the default for Garmin) of the road on which you are traveling. (see note below on TourGuides)

Since you said that you were 200 feet off the road, that might be part of the reason why you got no alert, although I think the real problem is that you were not "moving".

I have found that when I approach a location for which I have an alert set and have to come to a stop before I get there, my nuvi will issue a new alert as soon as I resume travel.

Note on TourGuides.
TourGuides are a way to get an alert whenever your unit enters within the pre-selected radius surrounding a location. I have several TourGuide files I constructed for vacation spots that alert whenever I come within a mile of a pharmacy that is open twenty four hours a day. This gets me used to approximately where such pharmacies are when I am in an unfamiliar area.

Easy way.

Pull up at the start of the drive way and touch Where Am I .Then note the coordinates or just save and name the favorite or saved place home.

Keep in simple, indeed your suggestion is the best.
