Could 3790lmt be set up to "speak" a proximity custom POI alert (e.g. red light)?

I installed the same customer POI proximity alerts (red light, school/speed zone, etc) to both my 765T and 3790lmt.

The POI files (.csv .bmp and .mp3) were imported into both the units using POI Loader.

My 765 unit can both "speak" the alert and displays an icon on the road map while I drive. But the 3795 could use both the graphic .bmp and sound .mp3 files that were imported into the unit to speak and display icons of the POI alerts...

Is there anything wrong with my 3795 or it is its default behavior? Is there any way that I can make the 3790 to do the same as other GPS - to display alert icons and speak the alert?

Thanks.

.wav

Welcome to the forum

Newer units can not use .mp3 file. The .mp3 file needs to be converted to .wav.

see MediaIO (to convert one format to another, say .mp3 to .wav)
http://media.io/

To use a .wav file you must have a specific version of sox.exe in the same folder where POI Loader resides (usually Program files (x86)/Garmin/Poi Loader)

To get sox.exe use

MP3

Newer units can not use .mp3 file. The .mp3 file needs to be converted to .wav.

The POI folder has both .wav and .mp3 sound files + the graphic .bmp file for the icon for each cvs POI alert. But after the POI Loader import, it returned an error message for each wav file - something like the wav file cannot be imported...

I used Audacity to create both the mp3 and wav files. These sound files plays fine with all sound players just not sure why the 3790 accept the mp3 file import but cannot play them and refused to import the wav files. Any ideas?

Why the icon are missing?

sox.exe

Just read the link. I will try the sox.exe and wee if it upload wav.

Any idea about missing icon (I used .bmp)...Do I have to use other graphic file format to display custom icon? Thanks

Sound alert and POI icon

Thank you BOx Car.

I got both resolved.

1. Sound - is OK now with the sox, and
2. Icon - by reading some of the links in the article you sent me, I now know why. The icons are all fine in my 765T display but not in my 3790 because the resolution of latter is much higher and the icons became so tiny that could not be easily seen. I will have to add more pixels to these graphic file. Or I need to find other form of vector graphic files that can be use for all displays... More research when I have time or if anyone can suggest a vector graphic file format that is acceptable to Garmin for POI icons.

Thanks

Size of POI bmp icon

Found out no matter how large the size or resolution, 3790 still display a rather small icon for custom POI on map.

For good reason

Imagine what the display would look like if the unit would display any size icon and the user had lots of icons.

the icons appear smaller than the lower resolution units

I have the 3790LMT and the icons appear smaller than the lower resolution units do but everything is much clearer and more detailed so kind of makes up for the smaller sized icons. The highly detailed maps is why I went with the 3790 instead of the 3490 when I compared the two side by side.

As always thanks for the

As always thanks for the great information.

Sox

That sox.exe program is always the one piece I forget when configuring a new computer to talk to my Garmin. Since it works in the background, once I put it on the computer I forget it is there. It ends up being a 2 hour confusion-fest until I realize what the problem is.

Remember when Garmin changed the poi loader install directory?

That messed up quite a few people also.

Nuvi 2460LMT.

@ppkf

I'm not certain if you are creating two sets of POI's, one for the 765 (mp3) and the other for the 3790 (wav).

If you are:
To simplyfy things, when creating a POI use ONLY wave files. Your 765T will recognize .wav as well as .mp3, but the 3790 will only regognize .wav. No sense creating two sets of POI's.

Most of the sound files on this site are mp3 so use the Audacity software you already have to convert them to .wav.

As far as icons being too small on the 3790, zoom in and they should get larger.

mono

the .wav file needs to be in mono mode, not stereo.

nuvi 3597 icons

When I make my icons for the nuvi 3597LMTHD, I create them at 48x48 pixels and they look just fine!

Hopefully this is useful.

Stereo WAV OK on my 765 and 2595

I have tested this several times before, but just did it again to verify.

I created a test file in EPE using 500 feet as a proximity for two different locations near my house on the way to an intersection. In EPE, I did links to two different .wav files, one mono and one stereo (having checked them in Audacity to make sure what they were). I saved the file as a .gpx so that I could use POI Loader Express mode and loaded the file to my 765.

I safely disconnected and fired up the 765. I went to settings and put the unit in simulation mode. I navigated to a nearby intersection and heard both alerts.

I repeated the test on my 2595 and got both alerts again.

Since this seems to be a common feeling about .wav files (ie. that they must be mono), I hope that others will do some tests. There should be nothing unique about my units.

Thanks ...

This thread was quite helpful ... Thanks for all the great info!
