Question for a friend (Nuvi 2797) >>>

I guess it is no secret that I am no longer a Garmin user so I was unable to answer this question from a friend...yes, I told him to sign up for poi-factory and jump on in but...

Does anyone have real world experience with the Garmin 2797? He was looking on Amazon and saw the 7" screen (news to me LOL) and thought it would be a good unit for old eyes. So, if anyone has any thoughts on ease of use, map routing accuracy, good features or bad...the info would be appreciated. I looked around poi-f and didn't see any reviews per se.

TIA, Ted

mixed

Some of the comments on GPSPassion are mixed. The bigger screen doesn't add anything you wouldn't see on a 5" screen, it's just bigger. For me, and I fit into the "old guy" category, a 5" won't block as much view out of the window assuming a dash top mount. The main advantage to a 7" that I see is if you have to mount the unit so it isn't close as in a motor home or bus. Then you would want voice control as well.

I have the Garmin 2797 , haven't used it a lot yet. it to me is easier to see but as stated it can be a little in the way. I recently took a trip i had taken before with a Garmin 1350 with same routing setting and the 2797 took me on a shorter route. Only problem i have had is after telling it to take me home it tells me to turn the wrong way into my driveway...not sure why...it is updated to latest maps and software...stan

Thank you for the replies!

Box Car...the unit will be used mostly in a camper van so the bigger screen shouldn't be a problem blocking the view.

Stan...good to know the routing seems better. I told my friend one of the reasons I got tired of Garmin was my perception the routing was just plain whacky.

Again, thank you.

Love the 7" size; would never go back to smaller unit. Nav functions fine as well as traffic and RLC app from POI factory. After using the 'real directions' for a while, really appreciate it as upgrade from my 1490T. I guess the difference for me is that I have it on all the time now regardless of trip plan, local or not. Gotten used to it as a real drivers asst; something I never did with earlier units.

Wish list would be garmin adapting their Integrated Dash Recorder cam to work with older units.

One warning if used with a beanbag mount, it takes up a lot of space so make sure your dash can handle it. It just barely fits on my Subaru dash. Too dangerous IMO to use with suction cup on windshield. If it falls off, you have a mini ipad crashing down on you.

I got this unit for my wife for Christmas and yes there is the vision blocking issue especially if you are shorter. I do like the size of the screen and the voice command is interesting at times as I think I am speaking another language witht he answers it somes up with but is is nice to just speak and not be reaching for a screen. Screen stays cleaner ha ha. I am working on getting the red light camera POI as my wife needs something to tell her to watch out. I am using the sandbag base which works well for me but my wife is a shorter. I have not been able to find a front of dash mount unless I want to get a custom one done. Still have lots to check out with this unit as it is still so new to me.

Thanks for all the input>>>

some of the stuff is Greek to me like "real directions" (I guess it makes sense that the directions with my 1490 were fake because they were awful) and such but I am printing out this thread and giving it to him.

1490

I also have a 1490 and it will verbally tell me to turn left when the map shows turn right with the map being correct.
