How often do you factory reset?

I have two Garmins, 750 and 760. Lately, the location has been off about half the time by as much as 3,000 ft, while the satellite signal screen claims less than 30 ft accuracy.

I got the coordinates and the location as shown on the map. The map matches the coordinates, but way off from where I actually was. So the problem is the coordinates. Not the map.

Tonight, I've factory reset both units. I'll see if the problem persists. I've also read somewhere that it's not a bad idea to factory reset a PC once a year.

So here's the question:

Do you periodically factory reset your Garmin? If so, how often? If not, have you had any problem similar to what I've experienced?

Never

I have never performed a factory reset on my c340 or 2595, and they have served me well. They both have the latest firmware, with the only issues being an error on the map that has eventually been resolved.

I can't say I've had a similar experience with inaccuracy, only when the signal strength was weak.

.

1. After a firmware update
2. After a map update
3. When the unit misbehaves or exhibits odd behavior

I've never heard of any such reports of something happening to any unit because a reset was done too often and I've never experienced anything of the sort. In fact, a reset helps clear out the unit and can resolve issues like odd operation. I've always reset my units without thinking twice (been involved with GPS devices for many years now) and I do the same with my iOS devices (iPhone & iPad) as well.

750

I have a 750 and I've never done a routine reset on it. I may have done a reset with a firmware update or two, but never for map change or odd behavior. But mine has never been off by 3000 ft, and if it was I'd reset it.

Me too.

Never reset

My 760 has never been reset. Sometimes it has had difficulty getting a position and I have done what the owner's manual says - boot up the unit and leave it in an open field with a clear view of the sky for a half hour. This fixes the problem.

I've had two different GPSr's over the last six-and-a-half years and I've never had to do a factory reset.

It wipes out the current.gpx file which contains Favorites.

Guess I'm too lazy to back it up and copy the file first.

never did a factory reset on any of them unless selling it

I have owned a number of Garmin units over the years and never did a factory reset on any of them until I was no longer using it and going to sell it.

It is hard to believe that the unit would be showing the location you are at on the map by over a half a mile from your actual location if the unit had satellite lock.

Are you stating both units are displaying this behavior or only one? I find it highly unlikely that it would be both and can't recall anyone statting they had the same issue as you.

I usually only do a hard reset on a firmware update or if the unit behaves strangely. Since both my Nuvi's are discontinued and no firmware updates, I haven't done a reset in quite some time.

only when a problem

I only reset when I have a problem. I never thought that it would require a periodic reset like my phone or computer but it is something to think about. Is it recommended to do a regularly time reset?

Have't done reset

I can't recall ever doing a factory reset on any of the several gps units I've owned. This is after many map and software updates. I would try it as a last resort if there was a problem.

I've certainly had to do such on troublesome android devices and pc's when transferring to someone else.

i think

I think I have done a factory reset on my units one time. That was only after I had added a rather large GPX file into my favorites by error. The reset was quicker than deleting several hundred entries, I did have a backup of most entries that I reloaded.

That said, regular backups are a necessity so you can recover from screwups more easily.

When Problems Show Up

I had the gps lock up and used the reset to fix this. (copy over the current.gpx file on to my PC first. Then I read that it may have had something to do with the bread crumbs trail and the software version I was using. I ran the update to get the latest version for my 750, and since then haven't needed to reset the 750.

Regarding updates - I wait for a while to make sure the update is good (usually reported here if it is bad) and then do the update.

After the reset

muell9k wrote:

Both have been off by 100 ft or so, but they eventually zero in to the more reasonable coordinates. The 750 was the one that was off by about 3,000 ft, and it's the one that seems to misbehave more often.

After the factory reset, the 750 was off by about 100 ft or so, but became accurate after a couple of minutes. I haven't driven the car with the 760 since the reset, so I can't report.

I'll leave them under an open sky as dobs108 suggests and see how that goes.

Thanks, guys. I'll report in further with updates.

When not using your Nuvi for awhile it must refresh the satellite fix and may take some time, that's possibly the case why it affects both Nuvi's. Also you must be moving to get the best accuracy.

Since you're in Colorado, perhaps in a mountainous region, you may not be getting enough strong satellite signals, thus the inaccuracy. Also weather may affect the readings.

Whenever you haven't used the Nuvi for some time do as dobs108 suggested and leave it under the open sky on a clear day if possible, and see if the accuracy improves.

Not yet but soon...

I've never done a factory reset on my 760 but plan to do so soon. I'm having issues with my books from audible.com and am currently unable to save bookmarks. I reformatted my SD card and that worked for about 3 bookmarks but then the problem returned. The recently, on a trip home from Sacramento, the unit kept telling me I wasn't on the freeway. It's never had that problem in the past. I'm hoping a factor reset will cure both problems.

I guess I'll need to make a backup of current.gpx first (I have a backup but it's not recent) so that i don't lose my favorites. All of my custom POI files are on the SD card so that won't be an issue.

Try deleting the trail. I used mine on a nearly 5000 mile trip, and on the way back home, between the 2000 Route and the buildup of the tracks it started acting wonky and freezing. Deleting the tracks cleared it up.

GPSMAP 78S

This topic made me decide to try a factory reset on my GPSMAP 78S. I use that one for geocaching but, a while back, the compass calibration function stopped working. There's a three-part calibration for the unit and it now fails to pass the second step. Garmin just told me to send the unit in for repair but they are slow and expensive. Maybe a full factory reset will fix the issue. It's certainly worth a try. Makes me wonder why Garmin didn't even suggest trying that approach.

Now and Then

I do a hard reset after a firmware update. I feel that it runs a little better after a re-set (searches go/load faster, but I have no hard data to prove this.

I also reset when the unit occasionally starts acting glitchy. The latest was when all was well but then it would not power up no matter what I tried until I hooked it up to the USB port on the laptop. This woke it up but it then took forever to shut back down from the "connection" screen. I checked the logs and it had a series of "abnormal power-down" entries listed. After the factory re-set the unit has been stable.

You will lose your favorites and many of the default settings you may have changed.

ALWAYS keep a backup of your most recent Favorites as well as all your Nuvi files. If not, someday you may regret failing to do so.

When there is problems

I bought a zumo 660 that had problems that a reset didn't fix. then the replacement zumo 660 had the same problem that a reset didn't fix. So Garmin replaced it with a zumo 665 that has been fine for almost 2 years though I am not crazy about its routing sometimes. It was acting a little sluggish recently so I reset it and it is fine again. Sadly I did lose my 500 MPH Max Speed reading.

A couple of years ago a friend bought a new Garmin because his nuvi 1450 kept crashing. I extracted his Favorites for him and loaded them on his new Garmin. He was so happy he gave me the 1450. After a single reset it has never again had a problem. I offered it back to my friend but he was so happy to have his Favorite he told me to keep it. It works great.

So backup and then reset if there is a problem. I don't routinely reset any of the 6 Garmins I maintain for my family and friends.
