Hi Guys,
Does anyone know if it is possible to alter the settings on the "up ahead" display, to something more useful, maybe one of my points of interest files.
Be great if you could.
Regards,
Paul
Manual says
On page 6 of your manual, it does indicate that some customization is possible.
Since Custom POIs are a subset of "Categories", it sounds like you might be able to.
If you follow the instructions on page 6 and find out that you can, please report back. Really I should have said report to us whatever you find.
.
You can download the manual here.

Try This:
As jgermann points out, it is possible to customize the “Up Ahead” screen to display any three of the following 7 choices:
Custom Search
Restaurants
Gas Stations
Banks & ATM’s
Parking
Rest Areas
Lodging
Unfortunately, I know of no way to include custom POI files.
You can however use the “Custom Search” field to display any POI that is part of the Garmin database such as “Mc Donalds”, “Home Depot”, “Walmart” etc.
To customize your “Up Ahead” screen, touch one of the 3 displayed icons. Touch the wrench icon in the upper left. Touch the icon you want to change. Touch one of the 7 choices listed above. Touch “Save”. Your choice is now displayed on the “Up Ahead” screen. The icons can be placed in any order you wish.
To create a “Custom Search”, touch one of the 3 “Up Ahead” icons. Touch the wrench icon in the upper left. Touch the icon you want to change. Touch “Custom Search”. Type the name of the POI you want such as “Mc Donalds”. Touch “Done”. Select one of the 46 available icons. Touch “Save”. Your icon and POI name are now displayed on the “Up Ahead” screen.
Hi Guys, Thanks for all your
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your suggestions.
I've downloaded the Manual ( shame you don't get it when you buy the GPS) and I'll see how I get on.

Paul

It is indeed a shame that we not longer get printed and bound manuals with many of the products we buy. I have always been a reader of manuals for tech stuff and have found out many things I did not realize my wiz-bang device would do for me. I would likely have never realized the capability was there had I not read the manual.
One of the hallmarks of a good manual is its Table of Contents and an Index. Sometimes a quick scan of an Index gets me to the answer I need. And remember that poi-factory has lots of excellent "How-to" FAQs which can be accessed through our INDEX TO FAQs and Reference Pages
We appreciate your asking the questions and getting back to us. Bear in mind that there are others here at poi-factory who will read the thread and learn something they had not yet encountered.
.
To me, it's better to not get a printed manual in the box.
A few reasons...
1. Many people won't read them regardless.
2. It's more environmentally friendly to have the manual in an electronic vs. printed version.
3. And most importantly, the downloadable version will almost always be up to date (or the latest version anyway) which is almost assuredly not the case with a printed manual.
and ...
4. Depending on the document type, it is searchable.

Garmin Manuals Provide a Wealth of Information But...
Unfortunately, they do not provide all the details. The manual will get you into the ballpark but won't give you all the rules of the game. Many of the features of your GPSr have to be learned by experimentation.
Much of what I know about my various GPS units has been learned by reading posts on this site. The fact that we all share this information is what makes this site so valuable IMO.

From my past searching for manuals, it also appears that the owners manuals are getting smaller. Now they seem to be under 30 pages while older models were over 70 pages even though they offered fewer features.
