Help!! (formatted my 3597LMT)

Hi All,

I am new to this and this is my first post, I have come into a problem with my new Garmin 3597LMT

When i opened my Garmin and turned it on the traffic updates wouldn't work, so i went to a friend with this and he formatted the whole thing! I was furious to find that not just have i had troubles with the traffic now i have nothing!

When i connected to my Mac it would not recognise it, and on the garmin device it just shows the symbol of a computer and the GPS device connected and its in a orange colour, when it fully connects and the computer recognises it the colour changes to grey.

I have searched this forum and it gave me a good tip to get the devise into "Mass Storage" Mode, I have done this and now my computer recognises the device as a mass storage but there is nothing in the folders. What do i do now where can i the files to make the device recognisable by Garmin express to reinstall my maps and updates?

Please help !!!

If you have no backup

your best bet is to call Garmin support and see if they will help you out

If the 3597 was in it's default MTP mode, I wonder how you can reformat the drive. When I attach my 3597 to the computer in MTP mode, right clicking on "internal storage" doesn't offer an option to reformat the drive. Reformat is only available in Mass Storage mode. question

Formatted

Your "friend" should replace the GPS for you at his expense since he obviously has no idea what he was doing!

BTW: On a PC (Dont know about MAC's) you can install a recovery program which may recover the GPS for you. Possibly not all complete but enough to go to Webupdater to replace your lost files.

Reset

Would a reset (hold power button for 10 seconds) do anything for computer to recognize the GPS?

Probably not

Probably not and on a 3597 holding the power button down for 10 seconds isn't how a reset is done.

Dublin, IRE

I see you say you are from Dublin, IRE Are you near the Garmin sales office? Perhaps they can help you. What map version were you using?

Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.

Call Garmin Support

I'm afraid without a backup your only hope is to contact Garmin and see if they can help.
If you only had a copy of the GarminDevice.xml file you would have a chance, this file identifies your GPS. Without it you won't be able to download anything.

I have that same unit and

I have that same unit and that is the best advice

Do a search for "garmin cure"

It is the only other way to attempt a recovery of the unit.
Best advice has already been given...make your friend buy a new one.

recuva

One thing you can try is download recuva which is a free file recovery program. I have used it several times and it worked great. The only thing I haven't had to try is recovering files on something that has been formatted, but the author of the software says in many cases it will do that. The important thing is to try the recovery software before you try copying anything to the GPS.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Formatting usually rewrites the boot records and file allocation tables. Without those your chances of recovery are slim. A lot will depend on if a quick format or complete format was done. I agree the best response would be to contact Garmin and beg for their assistance. As to the friend replacing the unit, I think they should be informed of what happened (if they didn't already know) and leave it to them to decide if they want to do anything. At worst, Garmin may charge a repair fee while at best they would replace the unit under warranty.
