Deleting maps from your computer

Guys and gals,
I just updated 3 nuvi's and I am now out of hard drive space on my computer. I know I have read on the site about deleting the maps that are installed on your hard drive when you download the maps but I can't seem to find it. Would someone please enlighten me as to the correct paths to follow to find these maps? I certainly would appreciate any help given. Thank you in advance.

control panel

If using Windows, go to the control panel and uninstall them. It's that simple.

On Mac...

in Finder, from the Go menu...Go to Folder ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps

Thanks Box Car

As usual, I was trying to make it more difficult that it is. Thanks again for the info. I will store it away for the future.

That works. In windows 7 the maps are stored in c:/programdata/Garmin/Maps

BACKUPS

As soon as others find that old maps are on their computer
(Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features and look for "Garmin"), they also will be deleting older maps.

BUT, every now and then, we find that people want to reload an older map (for whatever reason).

SO, maybe first making a full Image backup of your computer would be a good thing to do at the start of this new year. Tiger Direct has external USB drives at very reasonable prices. I just used a Western Digital "My Passport" 1 TB USB drive to back up my computer. This drive will literally fit in my pocket. I got it for $60.

I follow a computer Guru by the name of Leo Notenboom - find him at http://askleo.com/all-entries-by-date/

He suggests a free backup program called Macrium Reflect.
see http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Then look at his tutorials at
http://ask-leo.com/backup_and_restore_with_macrium_reflect_5...

5 GB out of 1 TB is a pittance. I have two old maps on my running computer. One of these maps is also saved a .../Downloads/Garmin/City Navigator North America NT 2013.40.gmap.

I feel comfortable deleting these older maps because I can (for sure) get the City Navigator North America NT 2013.40.gmap back easily - just a "restore" of the main folder (2.44GB, 215 files, 204 folders)

PLUS - think about having all of those pictures backed up.

WD Passport

In my opinion, Western Digital makes the best drives, I always buy the Black series. In all the years I've owned PC's I've never had one fail.

I too own a Western Digital 2 TB passport and I love it's size and portability. My only problem is my motherbaord (old) doesn't have USB 3 so the WD Passport that is USB 3 capable is not working at full speed.

Me Too

My primary PC is an older WinXP desktop with USB 2 ports. Remember when we thought USB 2 was such a speed improvement over USB 1.1? laugh out loud

My 3-year old laptop also has USB 2 ports, but it also has an eSATA port which I use to image (Macrium Reflect) the HDD to an external Seagate GoFlex drive. Much faster than USB 2.

Removed Map, not Software?

When I tried removing an old map on my XP computer it uninstalled MapSource too, so I haven't tried on my Windows 7 computer.

removing maps

when I go to the C drive, I see a list of map files that was installed on 10/31/13 but when I go to the control panel, uninstall or change a program, it is not listed. the only map that is listed is the 2014.30 update which was installed on 11/21/13. Is it safe to remove the teh 10/31 files?

Another way

http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare/3000-2086_4-104...

A step beyond a simple uninstall, is to use Uninstall utility in Advanced Systems Care (link above to cnet.com review). In addition to doing may other 'tune-up' type functions, the uninstall tool will scan for left over registry keys. Very helpful.

Delete maps

Thanks for info

Moved and then deleted.

I searched for an answer months ago and with no answer just moved the data folders to another drive with space. I kept them until the next update and Garmin Express just put more map update files in the original location. So, I guess the answer is just to delete. If you want to have a back-up file of the maps put them on dvd or usb (just in case).
