New TT GO Series for 2014

Regarding the 2014 TT GO units, will it be required to have a smartphone to receive traffic info?

I'm confused about this. I don't have/want a smartphone.
Just want to receive traffic info.

For now, I may be interested in the TT GO 500 with 5" screen.

Can anyone clarify this?

Thanks.

Yes you need a smartphone to

I don't think that statement is accurate for the North American market. It correctly describes the situation in Europe, where similar models were introduced last year (without Voice Control). However, in reading the press release from TomTom, I see no mention of the GO5000 and GO6000 models for the market in North America.

That agrees with comments I have seen that TomTom was planning on moving away from models with an internal cell phone - for several different reasons.

Had you bothered to check the link, you would have seen that it is for the Europe Market ONLY!! The GO 500 & 600 are also available in Australia.
I did not include info for the North American market, because jay9779 referred to the GO 500.

GO 1535 M & GO 2535 TM WTE are for the North American market.

The GO 500 & Go 600 are available in the US on Monday 3/31/2014. Are these units any better than previous Tom Tom models? I know they have been available in Europe for several months, does anyone have any feedback?

Just Speculation, But . . .

If you look at the specifications, it appears that a number of features in the current models are missing in the new models. For example, it is not possible to load your own POI files onto the GO500 or GO600.

The same situation existed when the current models were introduced several years ago, and most of the "missing" features were added over time via down-loadable software updates. However, when the current models were introduced, TomTom said that they were going to provide such updates, and they have made no comparable promise about the new models. For obvious reasons, this has many people concerned.

Looking at the discussion forums in Europe, where these models were introduced about a year ago, the opinions about the new models seem to be mixed, even excluding the complaints about features that have been removed. Some of the aspects of the User Interface have been praised as improvements, but there are a lot of complaints that the screens are terrible for several reasons. Apparently the screens are mostly just shades of low-contrast gray that make text unreadable, and they are also cluttered with icons for *all* of the gas stations on your route - and these icons cannot be turned off.

It's possible that there may be significant differences between the models being released here and the ones that have been in use in Europe for the last year, but that would be a break from previous marketing models.
