Custom POI upload verus BaseCamp collection upload

I am converting from several old Garmin devices to a new one with lifetime maps 40LM. (I am not happy with the 40 series as it is slow and missing many old features.. will upgrade again soon). I have loaded all the favourites from each old device into BaseCamp so I can sort, rename etc and reload onto the new device; or any future device for that matter. However, I am a little confused.

I travel to different cities on business, so have collection files called "Florida", "Dallas", "Atlanta", "Washington", "Canada" etc with all my favourites I entered manually over the years. Plus I have custom POI files loaded from this site, ie traffic cams, Wallmart locations etc.

I assume that when I upload those collection files to the Garmin they go into favourites (sorted into folder by file name) AND that they count towards the maximum favourite waypoints allowed. I was debating, creating a csv file for each city as I can put those on the memory card if necessary and avoid the limit on favourites.

What do people recommend. Should I work on creating useful files under collection for each area, and upload as needed - do these count towards the limit on favourites.

When travelling and I save a new favourite, I assume I will have to download that with BaseCamp and move to the appropriate 'collection' file, and then manually delete the favourite from the device.

Or should I simply create simply csv files for each city and upload as custom poi... What are the advantages and disadvantages of each. Thank you!!

Custom POIs

Use custom POIs but build them using GPX not CSV.

Favorites versus Custom POIs

Your device is one of those which can store 1,000 favorites.

Favorites are generally thought of as those locations (points of interest) that you want to navigate to with some frequency.

On the other hand, Custom POIs are places you might need to get to when on a trip, say. For example, I have in my Custom POIs all of the Subaru dealerships so that I can find one near to me if I am out of town and need service. Same thing for Sears Service Centers because that is where I buy tires and batteries.

Custom POIs include the camera files from this site. And, we can't forget the Rest Areas (I turn them into a .gpx file with a 2 mile proximity).

Favorites can be added to a new unit simply by having them in a .gpx file and putting them in the GPX Folder on the unit. Custom POIs (one file or many files) are "compiled" by POI Loader into a .gpi file and placed by POI Loader into the POI Folder on the unit.

Now, if I were going to fool around with the favorites I had accumulated on several units, I would have turned to EPE (Extra POI Editor) because of all the features it offers.

It sound to me like you should determine which of the locations you have accumulated should be "Favorites" based on how often you plan to navigate to them, and make the rest of them into several Custom POI files.

Thank you. I haven't started

Thank you. I haven't started yet - just loaded them all into basecamp - so am open to starting fresh. A few questions so I understand.

With a custom poi file say for "Dallas" with a 100 or so locations I have entered over the years. If I import that using poi loader and then travel to Dallas, do I have to go through several screens to custom poi and press "Dallas" to see all my way points everytime I get in the car. I was thinking not having to do that by using favorites would be easier but I am probably confused. Why would poi be better? I like turning on my gps in a new city and seeing the closest way points, but appreciate that is not best.

I have lots of poi speed files loaded and they appear on screen within defined proximity, but I never search for them.

Last Q. Now that I have all my waypoints in base camp how can I get them into a folder for poi loader as suggested.

Thank you.

Why?

Files only "go into favourites" when you load the GPX files directly to the GPS unit.

If you properly load them with the POI Loader software, then GPX and CSV files will be loaded as Custom POIs and not as Favorites.

Custom POIs with Categories

I would suggest that you take those cities (like Dallas) for which you have accumulated locations and make them into a personal POI file.

How do you set up and load custom POIs with or without categories. {G}

Then think about an additional category called, say, Cities. In that folder you would have "Dallas" and "Houston", etc.

Having loaded your various POI folders/files, you would then go to "Custom POIs" > Cities > Dallas and see the 50 closest locations in Dallas that you had loaded.

If there were more than 50 and you did not see it, there is the option to "Spell" the name you want and it will be found.

I think it's all a personal preference...

I you want them to show up under favorites or after cruising down to custom POIs...it's all up to you. Remember though, you have a hard limit of 1000 favorites. You can load literally millions of custom POIs. That alone may be the deal breaker.

Custom POI

Not familiar with 40LM, but assuming this can be done...

Save the data in Custom POI (Extras in some units)...

Then to use your example of Dallas, at the beginning of day or week, open the Dallas data...choose your stops for the day or week, then I am assuming you can save each stop to Favorite...while the master file of Dallas stays intact for your next visit.

While storage in Favorites, does not seem to be an issue, but if you choose or something happens to need to reset...the data in the Custom POI (Extras) will still remain. Likewise you can delete the Favorites after leaving Dallas and get ready for next city..

Sorta the best of both options, Master database intact in Custom POI and the stops at hand in Favorite.

Hope is helps and add an option.

Ditch the 40LM

I drive parts for a car delaership a couple of days a week. They have the 40LM in the truck for the out of town routes.

I find that it is very limited compared to the NUVI2555LMT that I have as my primary PND. Since you're not happy with the 40LM, I would bite the bullet and upgrade to something like the 2555 or the newer versions. I expect yo could get a 2555 or similar from places like Tiger Direct at a great price.

The 40LM, only allows you to pick a destination and insert only one via point. I used my own 2555LMT, once when I was on the out of town route. I used trip planner to load in all my stops at once. You're directed to the first stop and then it automatically routes you to the next stop when the first is reached.

I had previously created and maintain a POI file specific for the dealership that includes most of the out of town customers. Trip Planner can access any of the custom POI files and any other addresses that you want to load into it. I don't know the limit if any to the number of points that you can load into trip planner, but it has to be much better than saving points from a custom POI to Favourites and then deleting them when you star a new trip.

The 2555LMT and similar units also have traffic, which could be very useful.
