Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? – October 2013

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

GPS is always on when driving

Got that right! Mine is always on and ready for unexpected detours from construction, traffic delays, accidents, and so on! It's no good especially a traffic equipped GPS if it's in your glovebox.

Always use GPS

I always keep my GPS in the car. My wife had spine surgery and we have to go to a lot of different doctors and therapy offices.
After a while one office blends in with the others.
Without my GPS I would probably show up at the wrong office.

Trip South

Every September, we head south. We're not snowbirds but are just trying to extend the summer a bit.

Headed down through Wendover to see the Speed Trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Sadly, it had rained and the sessions were cancelled. From there it was down to St. George for some golf, and then on to Vegas for some sun and fun!

Always find it funny watching the TV weather reports in Vegas. They call the overnight temperatures of late September (65 - 70 degree Fahrenheit) "cool". We know that as we head back, we'll be hitting snow in Idaho and Montana. And when we get home, winter is just around the corner mad

My Last Trip was.....

Baltimore, MD to Dover, DE.

From Long Island to Cortland, NY and back

NYC traffic is hideous. In ideal conditions, it's about 4 hours one way. Last Friday, the trip took 7. Ugh! On the way back, I did hit a couple of road blocks, but 'The Bitch' (my nickname for my nuvi!) recalculated and actually steered me onto a great alternative for I-80/95 northbound over the George Washington Bridge. God bless route 4! Cheap gas, P stop and leg stretch before the final pull homeward. She directed me down Route 17 when there was a log jam on I-81 southbound past Binghamton. She then told me to bounce off of the Thruway approaching the Tappan-Zee and onto the New Jersey Turnpike, then Route 4. The return trip even with the miles of red eye ahead of me in the NY metro area only took 5 hours. Not bad for a Sunday evening! cool

Ottawa to Lake Placid

Great weather, lane assist/junction view showed up on my Nuvi 855 after updating to 2014.20.

No problems with route...EXCEPT

The route on the return to Ottawa wanted to send me through Massena/Cornwall. Understandable because it gets you to 4-lanes faster. But I wanted to go through Ogdensburg/Prescott. It kept insisting on either the Cornwall bridge or the 1000 Island Bridge. It got so ridiculous that I was within 1 mile of the Ogdensburg bridge and it still tried to route me 80 miles out of the way to the other bridges instead of driving 1 mile to cross the St. Laurence. All bridges charge a toll so it was not 'avoid toll roads'.

Strange indeed.

and only one minor glitch. While in Las Vegas the GPS was showing I should bear left. Of course my exit from I-515 to I-15 came up right after I this bear left and had to get off at the next exit and head back. Note to self, turn the volume back up once you start heading off on your journey.

Round Trip to Hershey

We did our annual trip to the big car flea market and show in Hershey PA 2 weeks ago. Even though we have made the trip many times I still like using the 2460 to let me know where I am. We did take a slightly different route to avoid a backup and it may become our new route. The GPS indicated it to be slightly closer but slower, but it turned into a pleasant road and kept us off a busy Interstate.

But the sad part is it marks the end of our camping season. The camper was removed from the truck and tucked into storage till next April. We have Holiday trips planned but not the same when you don't take your home along.

Used the little Nuvi to...

find the place downtown where the Police were holding their annual K-9 competition. Great show by the dogs!

Trip to OC

My last trip using the GPS was to Orange County, CA to my daughter's house. I know the way very well but use it to keep an eye on traffic. It's actually better than trying to get traffic from KNX News 1070. KNX reads the traffic super fast and speaks in tongues, so unless you are a resident, you probably can't understand what they are saying. They do slow down plenty to ready their commercials though. LOL
