Hi
I am currently using MS Streets and Trips live (gps antenna) on my laptop and pumping it up to the dash. The one feature I can’t live without is a the ability to see down the road and recognize via the displayed icon an upcoming truck stop, campground, rest area, etc.
Do upper end Garmin’s have this feature? Would I be able to “see” down the road a displayed icon from the POI factory collection?
Thanks John
I assume it will be no problem.

I do not have a Garmin, but if I understand your question correctly, I feel sure that they do have this capability. My TomTom devices can do this by setting the alert distance to a value I choose, and every time I have compared similar models between TomTom and Garmin I have found the features to be equivalent. Accordingly, I would expect ANY Garmin to have this capability, let alone an upper-end Garmin.

The garmins can do it.
I know I won't explain this as well as others, but will give you the basics.
You can have a "along the route" alert which is about 90 ft on either side of the road. The rest stop file that is here is very well set up to do just that.
The other alert type is a "circle" type. Basicly you can set an alert to give you what ever distance you want from the "circle" you are in. An example would be "TourGuide". I use that on some of my files and use 1/4 mile or sometimes 1/2 mile. You have to be careful with this because you do not want a TourGuide alert on say McDonalds.

Nuvi 3490LMT does this
My Nuvi 3490LMT does this. Truck stops seem to show up as little gas pumps from the built in POI database. I have not downloaded a POI file from POI Factory for Truck Stops.
The 3490 is an older unit at this point, but I would think the newer high end units do this as well. Compared to a laptop however you probably won't see as big an area on the screen at one time, so you'll have less "warning" of upcoming stops.
Also on the 3490 you can do a search by voice commands of any POI category. Truck Stops is one of them and it will display a list of them in nearest to furthest order. This works well for me when traveling by car looking for food or gas. This seems more productive then waiting for an icon to pop up depending on where you are. On some highways I never see any icons for a long time.
Funny I used to do exactly what you do way back when with DeLorme maps. My wife didn't appreciate the laptop in her lap that much though LOL. We're much happier with the small GPS on the dash.

Hi, I see the thread is
Hi, I see the thread is named for the RV 760. The short answer to your question is yes. Does all this and more. (and keeps me out of trouble for the most part)

Why do you say that?
Because depending on where you are that could be a lot of alerts. That holds true with other select pois also.
Edit: shows as bold. Why? Don't know how to change back. Sorry

You have to use the "/strong" tag, not "normal"

The bold started with a (remove the two spaces) < strong > and all that follows will be in bold until a (remove the spaces) < /strong > is seen.
To get my reply to be not bold, I started my reply with a (remove the spaces) < /strong >
Bold
I also tried to remove the bold in my previous reply. Thanks Craig.
RE: Mcdonalds. During our many travels on the 2 lane highways of America, I use a second GPS with the TourGuide. I identify false alerts and note the locations where the alert does not sound.
If you click on the Mcdonald file, you will see my name most often for corrections and additions.

Maybe we'll need to rename you GourmetBob
PS--all that's been said about bold can be done with italics as well using < em > and < /em >
That explains the bold, but I am not in to tags.
