Downgrading Firmware & Map Sets

I know this has probably been talked about before at some point but I was curious to find out if I had taken a snap shot of my entire device via Mass Storage Mode (hidden files and all) awhile ago and then re-uploaded it back to the device which has newer firmware and newer map sets, would that in turn put back the old firmware along with the old map sets? Or can I just restore certain files for the firmware only without changing the map sets (and vice versa)? Probably won't have to do this but I may want to. It's for my 3490LMT.
Thanks.
No.
On a Garmin device, the units operating software is in protected storage and is not backed up when you do a Mass Storage backup.
Firmware must be reinstalled into this protected storage via the gupdate.gcd file and the devices built in bootstrap software.

Ok thanks. I was afraid you may say that. In the old days, one could download the firmware file and use loader (I think) to re-install but now that it's done via these web update tools, there doesn't seem to be a place to download the firmware files and store them for future use (or is there a way?).

Gupdate.gcd files
You can back up and save the Gupdate.gcd files for different firmware versions. That (usually) makes it possible to backlevel to an earlier version as long as your device is still bootable.

Ok, so here's the noob question of the day then (since it's been awhile since I've done this). Which utility do I use again for the .gcd file to get it installed?
Thanks.

I didn't realize someone kept these archived. That's great!
Thanks.

Installing older firmware.
See the post "Reverting back to older firmware" by Pillowcase about half way down in this thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/38782. Note that if your nuvi is an older model, you would copy the Gupdate.gcd file to the \Garmin folder instead of the \.system folder.

Now it's coming back to me. Thanks for the link. I couldn't remember how to do this until now.
Thanks again.
