Help I formatted nuvi 1300 drive!

Formatted the Nuvi OS drive and need the replacement firmware files for a Nuvi 1300, any help would be greatly appreciated! Can someone copy them to a zip and send me a link?

Also the drive doesn't mount via usb on my computer and only get a splash screen on the garmin, do i need special firmware loading software to mount the drive again.

I can beloved Garmin pulls this bs! Blackberry for instance, you can wipe and brick the device and use "loader" software to put the os back on, Garmin wants $99 bucks to do this at their crappy factory!I can get the same model used on ebay for $50!

Thanks for the links. I think the biggest problem is the drive does not show up when connected to a pc or mac. Any tricks to make the drive "mountable" again?

Why doesn't my computer

Why doesn't my computer detect my device when it's in USB Mass Storage Mode?

Your computer uses USB Mass Storage Mode to detect your Garmin device. If your computer does not detect your Garmin device, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Unplug the USB cable from the computer 2. Turn the device off and then back on again 3. Plug the USB cable into your computer

The device should automatically go into USB Mass Storage Mode. USB Mass Storage Mode is indicated by a small picture of a device connected to a computer tower on your device's screen.

You may check the computer's recognition of the device on a Windows-based PC by clicking on your Start menu and selecting My Computer or Computer. The device will show in this window if the computer recognizes it. On a Mac, the device will show as an icon on the desktop labeled "GARMIN" or it can be found by selecting Finder from the dock and viewing the device list on the left-hand side menu within the window.

Note: If your computer still does not detect the device, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not a USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port. If the problem persists, try another computer, if available.

You will also need to ensure that you are using a compatible USB cable. For more information on compatible USB cables, visit the article What kind of USB cable do I need to connect my Garmin GPS to a computer?

you wouldn't have a useable map with someone elses files

It will not do you any good to get the normal visible files that were lost because unless you have a backup of the map file and the unlock file you wouldn't have a useable map. The map file is tied to a single specific unit and another persons files will not work.

You would be better off to buy a new unit than spend a 100 bucks to restore an old unit. I bought my top of the line 3790LMT with lifetime maps and traffic plus a 1 year Garmin warranty on the Walmart site for about $150.

Thank you. Unfortunately the Nuvi showed up as a drive prior to formatting. It is no longer a drive showing up via mac or pc. I don't understand how Garmin would/could even fix (or how I can) if it doesn't mount as a drive.

Lost Files

If the Nuvi is not formatted correctly, on boot-up, it may not be able to write to the flash drive and will hang at the Garmin logo. It may also go into an endless boot-up loop.

On a properly formatted Nuvi, the unit should boot, create the Garmin folder, then write the garmindevice.xml file and several basic folders and files. It will then boot to the main menu. Once that happens, you can then link the Nuvi to the PC.

You must be able to boot to the main menu in order to be able to access the subroutine that scans for a USB connection and establishes a link between the PC and Nuvi. This will NOT happen during boot-up, with the Garmin logo on the screen. You must be at the main menu where it says "WHERE" and "MAP".

In order to be able to properly format the Nuvi, you have to access the Nuvi's flash drive directly without going through the normal boot-up. There are a couple of programs out there that will accomplish this.

If your unit was registered and if you had a lifetime map subscription, you may be able to re-download the map files.

It is true that map activation/operation depends upon an unlock key that is created based upon the Nuvi's internal serial number and the map ID code (each map release has a different map ID). This is why a copied map from one unit to another will not work, because the unlock key was generated for another unit but there are ways around that too.

Don't give up on the Nuvi. It is fixable. I've done it many times. smile
