nüvi 1300 Formatted

Hi all,

I have nüvi 1300 SW Ver 5.90 and i accidentally formatted everything, after i erased all nüvi flash memory on next startup device automatically restored 3 folders:

- .System
- Garmin
- GPX

i managed to restore Voices, Vehicles and SW Updates using WebUpdater. And to restore maps i used MapUpdater. The one thing i cant restore is Text/Language files and Keyboard files, why the updater doesn't give me option to restore that?, and how can i get them back. Regards

P.S. I don't have any kind of backup.

Language files not needed if in the US

If you're in the US you don't need the language files or the keyboard files. American English is embedded in the firmware by default. If you absolutely need the languages, shoot me a message through my contact page telling me what you need and I'll send them to you.

And next time, make a damn backup! It should be the FIRST thing you do with a new piece of electronics.

Welcome To The Forum

According to your profile you are in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This forum is mostly dedicated to North America members so it may be difficult to get the files you are missing here.

It's nice that Strephon_Alkhalikoi offered to send you the English files but I'm unsure if that will satisfy your needs.

By all means Always make a backup of your unit, it will be priceless in situations like these.

Thx for the information,

Thx for the information, didn't know of the forums dedication to North America community, especially because i would need it default European language and keyboard files that includes Serbian, Croatian etc. Although if someone have it by any chance i would appreciate it for sending them. Thank you in advance.

Try GPSPASSION for your request. The forum is based in France so it has more European users and more files of use to the European users.

On Second Thought

Looking at my own Text and Keyboard files on my Nuvi 2460. I see they do have different languages in them.
Maybe the files from any 1350 will work for you.

It wont hurt to try them if somebody with a 1350 will send you the files.

But make SURE you make a complete backup of your files before adding the files sent to you.

Maybe members pwohlrab or Strephon_Alkhalikoi will be able to send to you.

I just sent him mine. He needed Serbian and Croatian, but I sent him everything I had text related that I wasn't using: EULA, help, keyboards, and text. It will get him back up and running.

You know

You know, call me old fashioned ... but this sending
copyrighted files overseas smacks in the face of the spirit of this website.

Sending copyrighted files to Bosnia ... well, that's got to be illegal.

I am also very, very suspicious of these first-posts "I formatted my GPS." I mean, come on. Sure accidents happen ... but so does someone formatting a locked, stolen GPS.

A legitimate owner's first and in my opinion, only source of help restoring a formatted GPS should be GARMIN International.

I've been around POI FACTORY for more than five years ... but it seems that these kinds of requests to "send files" is happening more often.

Thank you

Thank you Strephon_Alkhalikoi files you sent me worked like a charm. My nüvi is fully operational now.

Regarding to cbwatts post, i use my navigation when i planing to go on summer vacation, which im intending to do in couple of days, so i try to update maps, travel guides and some poi's to the newest. Like you said accidents happen, and sure a legitimate owner first source of help restoring a formatted GPS should be GARMIN International, or in my country firms that have GARMIN license to sell, repair etc. taking a lot of cash for that services. So i thought why not try to search some help online nothing illegal in that. I'm glad that i found it, thx to Strephon_Alkhalikoi once again, files he sent me is files that my nüvi had and i deleted. In my opinion GARMIN should put them in downloads/updates like a voice or vehicles files.

Regards.

Garmin's Response

To address the concerns around sending copyrighted files, I directly contacted Garmin and unpublished this thread while awaiting their response.

Here was my request:

JM wrote:

I am a moderator at POI-Factory.com and have a question about how a user can obtain Text/Language files and Keyboard files.

BACKGROUND

A user at POI-Factory.com claims that he accidently formatted his nuvi 1300. He says he managed to restore Voices Vehicles and SW Updates using WebUpdater. And to restore maps he says he used MapUpdater. The one thing he says he can't restore is Text/Language files and Keyboard files.

MY QUESTIONS

1) Are Text/Language files and Keyboard files available somewhere from Garmin.com?

2) Would it be okay for other users at POI Factory.com to send him a copy of these missing files via email from their GPS?

Many of the users at POI-Factory.com enjoy helping other Garmin owners but some are raising concerns over copyright in this situation.

This issue was brought to my attention as a forum moderator and I am looking for an official answer from Garmin to share with POI Factory’s user community.

And here is the response I received from Garmin:

Garmin International wrote:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Please have the user download our WebUpdater program. You can find most files such as the keyboards, text, and languages here. If WebUpdater does not offer those files for download it would be possible to take the files from another users device and have them emailed. The device the files are coming from would need to be the exact same model as the person missing those files.

For most devices, the preferred way to update the Software for a Garmin device is by using the WebUpdater program.

I echo Box Cars sentiments for your dedication in making this site what it is. That was nobel of you to republish the thread. It's nice to know that Garmin does permit SOME file sharing they feel does not infringe on copyright rules.

I'm glad the OP (borjanQ) got his unit working again and had the courtesy of informing the forum. Many times new posters get the answer they want and never heard from again. It appears he made an honest mistake with the format of his Nuvi.

--

Well, there are two things that I'm pleased about on this thread:

1. The OP was able to get himself back up and running with the files I sent.
2. Common sense prevailed, thanks to JM asking Garmin.

My apparently vague concerns mentioned elsewhere weren't that the thread was deleted or that there was a copyright violation. What bothered me is the apparently pervasive belief amongst the ordinary users that a person coming to this forum and saying "I've accidentally formatted my nüvi" is automatically assumed to have stolen the device. Such a mindset I find disgusting, and it only refreshes my belief that humanity is a parasite that has become larger than the host. Have we really sunk that low that we are incapable of giving others the benefit of the doubt?

End of line.

@strephon, I have already posted to encourage you to continue posting on this site. I find your posts to be informative.

However, I want you to go through the process of "formatting" some removable drive. If you are like me, you have a number of older SD cards or flash drives that are not now being used because of their limited capacity. I found a 1 gig SD card to play with.

I think we would agree that most people who have GPS units are not computer geeks and would have no idea what we were talking about if we were to tell them to "format" their device. You really have to know what you are doing to even FIND where to format a device.

Here is what one has to do to "format" a drive.

Get into Windows Explorer in "Folders" view - as I recall, when my nuvi is attached to my computer, I get an Explorer window that is not in "folders" view, so I have to click the menu item "Folders" to get there.

Right click on the removable drive

From the popup list, select "Format"

The reason I spoke of "Folders" view is that I could not find a way to get to "Format" if I were not in "Folders" view.

At this point, one is presented with a dialog box which will be titled
"Format Removable Disk (x:)"

There are several options that may be chosed from this dialog, but finally one must click "Start" to proceed.

At this point, one is presented with a warning box which says"

Quote:

WARNING: Formatting will erase ALL data on this disk. To format the disk, click OK. To quit, click CANCEL.

Only upon clicking "OK" will a disk be formatted.

So whenever someone says they "accidentally formatted their device", I react very skeptically.

There are just too many steps that one must take and too many warnings that must be passed over to "format" any disk for me to be able to accept that formatting was "accidental"

Deleting one or more important files is another matter. I have one too many time deleted a file by mistake - usually recognizing immediately that I had made a mistake. You have likely made similar mistakes.

However, you and I would know that we had a good chance of recovering files by using some utility like Recuva - which is often recommended on this site. As I recall, the Recycle Bin will not give us the opportunity to recover files deleted from removable drives.

The chance of recovering deleted files from removable drives is usually very high because there would not likely have been activity which would have overwritten clusters previously occupied by the deleted file(s).

I remain skeptical.

Accidental formatting.

Windows explorer sometimes changes the drive letter you are used to seeing as your Garmin, SD card, or any removable device. This happens based on the last devices that were mounted. For example, you might be used to seeing your Garmin mounted as Drive G: and the SD as H:, then because you have attached some other device the Garmin becomes H: and the SD is I:. So if you are distracted or not careful when intending to format the SD card, it is easy to blow by the prompts and format your Nuvi as H:, thinking you are referencing the SD card.

I am not making excuses for carelessness, just saying it is not that unusal to accidentally format the wrong device.

Quicker way to get to formatting

There is a much quicker way to get to a location to format something.
That would be "start" and then "My computer". Then just right click on the device and click on "format". All other steps remain the same. If I am not mistaken the Garmin will be listed as a garmin as a description.

Most likely the main reason for mistakenly formatting the wrong device or card or drive is we are distracted. This is the age where we all have too many things going on and are easily distracted. But you are correct, there are a lot of warnings through pop up windows that you need to click on. Unfortunately, why read the pop up warnings after you chose (what you thought) was the correct device?

This is a possible scenario but not likely.

In this scenario, the nuvi with attached SD card has already been attached to the computer. If the SD card needed formatting, it would have already been done.

Why would one want to farmat the SD card? All the ones that I have purchased were already formated. Was that not the case with you?

Also, I have not ever seen anyone say that they meant to format their SD card and accidentally formated their nuvi.

Could happen but I remain skeptical.

Since any legitimate

Since any legitimate, registered Garmin GPS owner has access to his/her GPS serial number (through My Garmin online or the sticker on the back of the GPS) .... maybe we should require a first-timer "I formatted my GPS" poster to PM his/her serial number to JM ... who could use his contact at GARMIN to verify the unit and ownership.

I'd bend over backwards to help a legitimate owner in need.

I too enjoy helping others whenever possible.
But I don't feel that is a practical approach.
Jim has enough on his plate to take the role of detective.

Perhaps a better option would be to suggest the new poster contact Garmin Support and explain his\her situation regarding the accidental formatting of their Nuvi.

If that fails, there are other forums the poster can join that are more proficient in solving software or hardware issues. They can always do a Google search.

I do feel a sense of guilt in my posts suggesting other members send the OP poster the missing files.
I really never took into consideration the potential copyright infringement. I think it's best to avoid this potential problem whenever possible.

I remain skeptical.

In Windows 7, when you right click the Nuvi and select "Eject", the command to "Format" is right above "Eject". Of course, there is another warning that pops up when you select Format, but if someone is clicking fast and is distracted, I can see how this mistake can happen.

So because "Format" is right above "Eject", I can see how people are innocently formatting their Nuvis, especially the older models like the 1300 which show up as mass storage and don't have the MTP mode of the newer Nuvis. With MTP, there is no option to format and there is no need to eject. This is probably part of the reason why Garmin introduced the MTP mode--to stop accidental formats.

Accidental formats

I have a hard time believing "accidental formats."

Why do these accidental formats only happen to first-time posters ... posters who have never posted on POI-FACTORY?

Why has it NEVER happened to one of the many regular POI-FACTORY users?

I have been a member for more than five years ... and to my knowledge, no POI-FACTORY regular user has ever formatted their GPS by mistake.

I would think that if it was so easy to do, there would be atleast one of us who regularly have our GPS's attached to the computer, messing with this, messing with that, would have accidently formatted the GPS.

But, no, it is always a first time poster ... someone who I think would be a bit timid when they have their GPS connected to the computer.

I thought about the fact that, when one left clicks on a removable drive in the left pane of Windows Explorer, the "Format" and the "Eject" choices are one over the other.

That still does not suggest to me that someone clicking very quickly would overlook the very large dialog box and the dramatic warning that appear.

One can not be looking away distractly and clicking and get to the start of format because the proper buttons are not where one accidentally can click. Also, the first button is called "Start" - not something one would expect for "Eject"

lost my keyboard files

Hello, I was wondering if you still have the nuvi files ? I deleted the files from my nuvi 1300 by mistak, then I did the sync with Garmin software I can't activate the qwerty keyboard, I do have a keyboard but it's not the one I want the original one came with. Also tried from settings qwerty keyboard but didn't change anything - something missing.
if you can help with that appreciate it.

Thanks

@binanoo

I would suggest that you contact Garmin and explain to the customer rep what has happened. They should be able to help you.

Another course of action would be to download the free and portable software package Recuva. It can be found at http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=recuva&m=

Do what is called a "deep scan"
