Nuvi 300 and memory card

Hallo, my first post here and i question is about a small problem with my older Nuvi 300.

I cant get it to read the memory card.
The memory card is a SD 2gb.
I have tried to put a Gpi file on the card but i cant see the information on the card in my nuvi.

Next i tried to put the card (empty this time) in to the nuvi and load the file in to my nuvi with Poi loader but poiloader tells me that the file is to big and it tells me the same with or without the memorycard in place and so i figure that nuvi doesnt see the memorycard at all.

I have tried to format the Sd-card in the ways i can with my computor but it does not change anything.

Do you now something or have any ideas why this doesnt work please tell me about it.

Best regards Jocke

Are you using the pull down

Are you using the pull down window in poiloader to select SD card?

Try this.
1.Connect your GPS to your computer using the usb cable.
2.Now run poi loader http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
3.When you see screen find device make sure you select the proper one. If using SD card use the pull down window .The arrow located across from device and selects the SD card.
4.Click next and put mark in Install new custom Poi’s onto your device.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 custom pois.

.

For SD Cards 2GB & less, you should probably format it as FAT 16 as recommended at the END of the article):

http://en.kioskea.net/faq/9673-formatting-a-micro-sd-card-to...

If you can read/write the card under Windows as FAT 16, the nuvi should be able to read it. To test further, copy a couple of JPG images to the card (a specific folder is not necessary) & see if the nuvi can find/show the images using it's built-in image viewer. If it can't find the images, the nuvi's internal card reader may be damaged or it's contacts may be dirty (clean the card's contacts as well). Also, try a different card (if you have one) and see if you can access the images on the nuvi. If you can, the first card may be damaged.

You say you are trying to put a .gpi file on the SD card.

You say that POI Loader says that the file is too big.

Since I have never run across this problem, I have to ask exactly what your input to POI Loader is. It can not be a .gpi file because POI Loader accepts as input either a .csv file or a .gpx file. POI Loader creates .gpi files from these two file types.

Let's try to simplify the problem. Pick some .csv file for the poi-factory.com website and download it to a brand new folder called MyPOIs.

Attach your Nuvi to your computer with the SD card in the Nuvi. Your computer should indicate to you that it has found two new removable devices.

Now run POI Loader

The first screen will ask if you want to save to a Garmin Device or to the computer. Select Garmin Device and click Next.

The next screen will look for Garmin Devices and should find both your Nuvi and the attached Memory card. Choose the Memory card and click next.

The next screen will ask if you want to install POIs or remove previously installed POIs. Choose Install.

On the next screen point POI Loader to the folder MyPOIs (which should contain a file you just downloaded). You can give the file a name like MyFirstPOIFile and then click Next.

If POI Loader gives you an error message, write it down and get back to us.

However, I suspect that you will wind up with a Custom POI File on your SD Card.

Let us know, please

Saving POI Files

jgermann has provided a good tutorial for you.

Whenever I create a POI file I make it a habit to save the file to the computer rather than the device.
This way I already have a backup copy. I can then copy it to the POI folder on the Nuvi or to the Garmin\POI folder on the SD card. When I copy to the SD card I use a card reader, it seems to go faster using the card reader.

Hallo again and thanks for

Hallo again and thanks for the massive respons i have got from you, i have lunch-brake right now so i will give you some quick answers and then i will read your posts tonight and follow the links.

About the format i dont think FAT16 is an option in my Windows 8 computor, i have found FAT and FAT32 and somoneelse i dont the remember the name of. Maybe i can look in my older computor to see if FAT16 is an option there.

jgermann, i see i wasnt clear with what i wrote.

I have a GPX file that i have been updated in Extra poi edit and there is descriptions to every poi, i also have a file with pictures for most of the pois.

I have tried three ways to get them into my gps

1. I converted the file in poiloader to .GPI and saved the file in my computer, then i put the gpi file onto the memorycard and put it into nuvi,but i cant find the file in my nuvi.
This is the way my internetfriends do it and it works for them but not for me, they have newer nuvi than me.

2. Next i tried to put the GPX file in to poiloader and save it to my garmin, with and without memorycard in the nuvi and every time i got the same message that there is not enough memory, same ammount of space is missing with both card in or out and thats why i think that my nuvi dont see the card.

3. My third way was to put the card into the nuvi and then attached it with cable in to the computor, this way i can find the card inside nuvi and i can put a smaller file (4 pois) onto the card and it works. But when i try with the file i want i got the same message about not enough space.

I will look into your answers more carefully tonight and se if i can learn something on my own.

Thank you for trying to help me. smile

Jocke, here are instructions from Garmin. The upshot is that Win8 can format it for you. You can use EITHER FAT of FAT32. These instruction are from 2012 so Win7 and Win8 can be treated as synonymous.

Quote:

On Windows, make sure to format the microSD/SD card to a FAT or FAT32 format. A 2 GB or less card can be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Anything larger than a 2 GB should be formatted in FAT32.

For mass storage devices:

Place the SD card into the SD card slot in the device
Go to My Computer if on Windows XP / Choose Computer if on Windows Vista / 7
Locate the removable disk drive underneath the Garmin drive
Right click on the SD data card drive
Click on Format

And to be safe, before doing a Format, have a backup stored on a computer of the entire nuvi. Also, double or triple-check that it's the SD card being formatted and not the nuvi 300. All too often we see posts here of folks who accidentally formatted their GPS rather than a SD card.

Pictures?

Jocke,
Ok - since you say the small (4 POI) file works, there must be something going on with the larger .gpx file.

So - let's try to simplify the problem file.

Open the .gpx file with Notepad (you will have to change the file type to "All files (*.*)")

find the first occurrence of
<wpt>

Then I want you to delete the line that contains <wpt> and all intervening lines down the file up until you arrive at the last
<wpt>

After deleting a bunch of lines, you should be left with one location that will look something like what is below. The location begins with
<wpt>
and ends with
</wpt>

Quote:

<wpt lat="38.84862" lon="-98.35553">
<time>2012-05-02T15:33:46Z</time>
<name>Salina End</name>
<link href="C:/BMP/test.bmp%20c:/snds/att.wav"/>
<extensions>
<gpxx:WaypointExtension>
<gpxx:Proximity>60960</gpxx:Proximity>
</gpxx:WaypointExtension>
</extensions>
</wpt>

The .gpx file itself will end with one more line
</gpx>

"Save As" this file under another name - remember to keep the .gpx extension. My technique is the put on the file name line something like "simplify.gpx" which tells Notepad to save the file exactly as I specified - so the quotes are required.

Next, create a NEW folder on your computer called something like Simplify into which I want you to move the simpify.gpx file. This is being done so that POI loader can be pointed to a folder that contains one and only one file to be loaded.

Now, run POI Loader a couple of times. First, just put the .gpi file that POI Loader will create on the 300. Assuming that works, do a second run and put the output file on the SD card. In both cases, POI Loader should tell you that it has created 1 POI

If either of these attempts fail, then please write down the exact message and let us know what it says.

The file you want.Did you download from POI Factory ?If yes what is the name of it?When you download file on your computer right click on the file and go to properties .How large does it show the file to be?

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40730 to format a sd card.

I must read every answer i get from you, but a quick answer about the file is that i have not download it from poi factory, its a friend in my motorhome club that has produced the file and i have been trying to update it from 2400 poi to 2900 poi.

Have you right clicked on the file to see just how large it is?

Based on your post "I have a GPX file that i have been updated in Extra poi edit and there is descriptions to every poi, i also have a file with pictures for most of the pois".It may well be larger then the 2 gb card you have.Especially if the descriptions are set up with mp3 files for each location.

Charlie has asked a pertinent question.

We need to know the file sizes of the .gpx file AND the file containing the "pictures".

I do not have time to check this out right now but I seem to recall that POI Loader works in phases. I think it complies the .gpi file and then transfers it to the device. Does anyone remember?

The size of the file after i

The size of the file after i convert it to gpi is 206Mb. No mp3 in it, only text descriptions and one picture to every poi.

jgermann,, there is a chance that i run out of talent here, but i will give it a try to open it with notepad but i have no experience with it.

I appreciate all of your help very much.

Just for a test.Use Extra Poi Editor load the gpx file to it.Save the file as a Garmin csv .Run poiloader with the card in the Nuvi 300.Poiloader will create the correct folder on the SD Card.Now see if you get the same error message.Note a lot of data will be lost compared to the what the gpx has.But this is just a test.

I think i did it!

Finally i had the time to sit down and concentrate on my gps and my computor.
I am a little embarressed at the moment.

I started to read the question "Are You Using The Pull Down" i must say that i did not now that was a possibilty,, that something could be that easy.

Well i tried it and choosed that the file should be placed on the memorycard and guess what happens,,, smile

After som time it ended up as jgermann thought: "However, I suspect that you will wind up with a Custom POI File on your SD Card."

smile i am a little embarressed but very happy!
Thanks very much for taking time to help me, and now i now more about formatting, it ended up with FAT.

Sounds like you are good to go now.You are not the first one to miss the pull down window. So no big deal.
