POI Japan

I can not get my GPSmap 62stc to recognize POI's in Japan from the EXTRAS file. I have manually entered them in and also have loaded the POI file "Japan(GPX)" from POI Factory using the POI loader. In neither case will they show up in the EXTRA file. When I manually entered them they were intermingled with other POI points and entered as a CSV file. All the other points show up but not the Japan points. The unit will accept waypoints in japan and save them in the waypoints file and will save them when used in routes. The unit will also display POI's from Japan maps. It just seems to not like Japan POI's stored in the EXTRA file.

100 miles

I believe I read in another forum that the Garmin handhelds will not show Waypoints in the list that are more than 100 miles away. They might not even show up in Spell Search, either. If you are here and wanting to verify that they are indeed loaded, scroll your map display to Japan and they will show up on the map. So you'll know that they are loaded and recognized but won't show up in the lists until you actually get there.

Generally you will not see anything past the closest 50.

I am not sure on the hand helds though. You should be able to do a search on a specific poi name though.

Japan poi

I have many other pois in the same list (file) that are over 500miles away and they show up correctly.

@wrloll

Please give us examples of a couple of lines for POIs that (1) show up and (2) do not show up. What is the extension of the file from which these examples are drawn?

I always suggest simplifying when debugging. This would mean deleting all .gpi files (which is the file type into which POI Loader puts custom POIs). MAKE A COMPLETE BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.

After clearing .gpi files, do a run of POI Loader with just a few POI locations that you are interested in.

If you do this, please give us a report as to what happens.

Japan Corrdinates GPSmap 62stc

These lines are from a CSV file installed on the GPSmap 62stc
The lines “Judie C” and “Little Sable LTH1”show in the GPS EXTRA list.
The “Kevin House” (Japan coordinates) does not show in the EXTRA list
The only difference I can see is one longitude being + the other -. But if I
reenter it as a –138.544807 it still does not show on the Extras list.

-111.761334 34.78973201 JUDIE C 215 ARROWHEAD D SEDONA - 6351 928 6862
138.544807 36.97581667 Kevin House Sakae Mura; Nagano Sakai Japan; 090 333-7 3248
-86.53770444 43.65185603 Little Sable LTH1 ph 231 873 1631

The file lines below are from a CVS file converted from the “JAPAN(GPX)”
file down loaded from POI Factory. I loaded both the downloaded GPX file and
the converted CSV file into the GPS and the 3 points did not show on the GPSmap 62 from either file.

139.771579 35.70021699 Akihabara Eki
139.796024 35.70822699 Asakusa Eki
139.670406 35.28828803 ATM

I have also entered the list below as a test. They all show up on the extra list except the Japan coordinates.

138.241 36.40869 Japan
-158.038 21.47827 Oahu
-129.432 34.43067 Pacific Ocean 500 w LA
-177.924 51.77856 Tanaga Island Alaska
166.6406 19.28101 Wake I AAF
177.9244 19.28101 Near Midway

No Japan

Cut and pasted the last 6 lines into Notepad. I added commas and saved the file as "Japan.csv". I opened the file in EPE and there were 6 entries and the Japan location shows up (is it a gas station?)

Used POI Loader to load 6 pois into my 2595, and Japan does indeed not show up.

POI's not on EXTRAS list on GPSmap 62stc

Is the Garmin 2595 the same unit as my GPSmap 62stc? Does it use the same software? I did as you suggested and got the same result. No Japan. Further investigation (below) shows this EXTRAS problem is not limited to Japan, but a longitude related problem. Very strange.

Further investigation shows that on my GPSmap 62stc any POI point with a longitude between about E 30 21.278 and E 159 57.430 will not be show up in my EXTRAS list. They are in the POI file, both .csv and .gpx but will not show on the list. The points were generated in Base Camp, exported to my computer, converted from .gpx to .csv and uploaded to the GPS (both .csv and .gpx files of the same data) using POI Loader.
As a side light I can not find to list of POI’s on the GPS using Base Camp. They don’t seem to show up in Base Camp in the GPS User Data list. Below is the file I used to narrow down the longitudes for the missing files.

On both my 765T and my2595LMT, these showed up

159.3872 -26.8829 E 159 23.231.8635 W

These did not
30.53112 -33.3397 E 30 21.278
31.74734 -33.3291 E 31 44.841

153.0286 -27.4658 Brisbane

I was quite interested in the distances as the crow flies and why the switch to E from W from my location.

Problem solved for now

The problem seems to be that the GPSmap62 will not list a POI that is over 5680 miles from your location (the location of your cursor). Move the cursor closer than 5680 miles and the POI will show in the list. But any other POI's that are on that list that are now more than 5680 miles from the cursor will drop off. My list was only 23 POI's long with Japan and Michigan POI's.

What would happen if you were to change the "current location" of the unit? Have you tried that?

Changing Location

What do you mean by "change the current location".

Set a new location

Garmins have the ability to "simulate" being at a place different from the "current location". The technique for getting to a button which will say "Set Location" varies by unit, but you should be able to learn how to do it by reading your manual.

Once you do a "Set Location", the unit thinks it is there, so when you do "Where To?" the "Set Location" position will be the starting point.
