Nuvi 40LM does not recognize map on Garmin UK/Ireland SD

Hi all. I just purchased a new Garmin Nuvi 40LM and a new Garmin City Navigator SD card with a map of the UK and Ireland. I plugged the card into the Nuvi and tried to find available maps under Tools/Maps/Info, but it only showed the built in map (USA). When I plugged the unit into my Mac computer, it shows the Garmin and a device labeled 'No Name', which I assume is the SD card. The No Name has the following files:
GMAPSUPP.GMA (4KB)
GMAPSUPP.IMG (21.8 MB)
GMAPSUPP.UNL (4KB)
Does this seem right? The files seem very small. Any clue why the map does not show up on the unit? The card seems like it should push in further into the unit, but it doesn't budge. Since the card shows up on the computer, I assume that the contact is OK.
Thanks for any help and advice.

Garmin map?

Garmin's maps on SD cards are locked to an internal serial number on the card. If you bought a clone or a copy of a card the maps won't work. Did you buy the map/card from Garmin or another party? If you bought the card from Garmin, they will replace it if it doesn't work. The fact your card says "no name" bothers me.

Garmin map?

The card was sold as new Garmin card. It came in what looks like an original sealed Garmin packet. I bought it through Amazon, though the company selling it is called World Shop. World Shop has an excellent (5 star) rating according to Amazon users.

I think I'd contact World Shop

Try contacting World Shop about a refund or replacement and to be safe, I'd go for a return/refund rather than a replacement. What's their return policy? If they balk, you may want to contact Amazon for help. If World Shop is an authorized dealer, Garmin may offer a replacement.

I agree that one file size, GMAPSUPP.IMG (21.8 MB), is much less than I'd expect. The img file size for all of Europe is over 2000MB and my thought is that UK/Ireland should be more than about 1% of Europe.

Map On SD Is Corrupt

The gmapsupp.img file on your SD card is corrupt.
You indicate it displays "21.8MB". That figure is only a very small fraction of what the size should be. I would call World Shop and explain the facts to them and return it for a replacement.

Edit: Was typing when CraigW made his post.

Update: The requirements for the download version of this map according to Garmin's web site is:

File Information

The file size of this download and space required on device or microSD™/SD™ card is 350 MB...

There may be small differences between a purchased Garmin SD map and space requirements for a download/installation, but over a factor of 10 difference indicates a corrupt map as stated by muell9k.

I see that World Shop is a "Fulfilled by Amazon" seller so I expect you should have no problem getting an exchange.

Possible Cause

The only thing I cn think of as a possible cause for this small map file size is that somebody attemped to modufy it in Map Install, in the process the selection to shrink was not correct then saved.
Are you sure that the package from World Shop was completely sealed? Maybe a return from someone that corrupted the map and did a good job of re-sealing the packege.

A good tip regarding SD cards is to push the slide to lock for READ ONLY position so the file is protected.

Thanks

Many thanks to you and Craig W for your quick replies and helpful advice. I will contact World Shop or return directly via Amazon. I'll let you know if that resolves the problem.
The Garmin comes with its own empty SD card. I assume that I can also download the UK/Ireland map directly to this card? Is there any down side to doing this (other than it will be more expensive)?

SD vs download or DVD

I do see that that download or DVD options are more expensive than the pre-loaded SD card map from Amazon. Wow.

There are some differences between the use of each. More than likely, this isn't going to be an issue for you unless you plan another nuvi purchase soon.

The Garmin-pre-loaded map on SD card is a map tied to the specific SD card. The one big advantage to this is that the SD card can be swapped between any Garmin device that accepts the card and can display City Navigator maps. So if you were to buy another Garmin nuvi, you could use the card in either device. Another advantage to a Garmin SD card is that if your trip to the UK/Ireland is a 1-time vacation, once you return to the States, you could sell the used card and map on eBay, Craigslist or whatever. If selling a used Garmin SD map on eBay or elsewhere, be sure to state in the listing you create that the card is a genuine Garmin-made card and state what version of the map the SD card has; e.g., 2014.10.

The DVD or download version of the map will install the map to the internal nuvi if space is available or to a SD card, but in this case, the map will be tied to the specific nuvi device to which it was installed. You may need to confirm this, but one possible advantage to the download-purchased map is that if the SD card ever is lost or damaged, you may be able to reinstall the map to a new SD card, once again only being able to use it on the device it was first installed to.

One advantage (again, check this if this feature is important to you) to the DVD map is that I think you can purchase numaps Lifetime updates for the map and therefore receive up to four map updates per year of the map. This could be very useful if you plan to visit the UK or Ireland several times in the future years. I expect the DVD version could re-create a map in a nuvi or on a SD card if the first map failed, but once again, the reinstalled map will only work in the device for which it was first created.

The big advantage to the download version is that with a broadband internet connection and a SD card, you'll most likely have the map installed more quickly than by ordering the SD map or DVD. There can be issues with downloading maps or creating a map from a DVD but these are rare and can usually be solved.

Good luck on your return and replacement. I hope your European trip isn't coming up too soon... cool

Just to be sure, did your card arrive in a sealed package looking like these:

Good Job CraigW

As usual, you go above and beyond helping those in need. I'm sure all of Tak's questions have been answered. Hopefullt World Shop will help him out.
