Step by Step OK, Verbal Not

We have a nuvi 50LM and recently updated to the newest map. Haven't had any problems until yesterday.

Yesterday I programmed in a POI to a diner near Pittsburgh. The step by step route was correct (I pretty much knew how to go but wanted to be sure).

The voice kept saying to turn right or turn left on most every street. The step by step was correct but the unit kept 'calculating' and it was as if it didn't know whetre it was. The weather was overcast and drizzly but didn't seem that bad.

Never had this happen before and didn't really say anything posted here like it.

stuff happens

You may have not had a good lock on the satellites and the unit thought you were on a different street. Did you try resetting the unit? Sometimes even just canceling the route and restarting it will correct that type of problem.

I have found if I ignore

I have found if I ignore where my 50lm wants to go it gets very vocal about getting me back on THAT route no matter how far I have strayed from it. Turning off the route and back on will make it recalculate the route from where I am instead of trying to force me back on the old route

Resetting?

Not sure about resetting the unit. I did a 'restore' on the settings screen (it reverted the day/night/auto to auto so I know it changed something.

We did cancel the route and then re-do it but it still kept on saying to turn here andthere. It even said to turn left when it previously said to (correctly) turn right.

k8doc - I know what you mean about it wanting the go the way ther unit SAID, but after a short while, ours usually 'sees the way we want to go (e. g. going through Breezewood to 70E instead of Garmins recommendation to take 30E at Breezewod).
