nuvi 40LM - POI files showing up multiple times

Hello,
Well I have been successful in getting POI files (specifically Redbox locations) to work along with my custom .bmp to show up. Maybe, I should say too successful. In my many attempts at getting it right I now have 3 "folders" that contain the same POIs.

Here is my screen navigation:
-Where To?
-Extras
-Custom POIs
{here are the 3}
All Categories
Redbox
Redbox

They all seem to work the same. I used POI Loader and specifically wiped out the existing POIs but it did not get rid of them.

When I hook up my GPS to the computer and look at the files on the GPS I see a folder 'Poi' which contains a Redbox locations.gpx file . When I look at my SD card I see the POI folder there with the same Redbox locations.gpx file.

Sooooo, do I delete the 'Poi' folder on my device or just the file in the folder? Or do something different.
Thanks,
Compassrose

If

If you loaded the POIs using POIloader then it created a file with a gpi extension (like poi.gpi) and placed that file in the Nuvi's POI folder. That is the only file you need to see the Custom POIs you loaded.

If you've got the GPI file on your Nuvi you don't need the GPX files in either location you mention.

Delete all your custom POIs

Delete all your custom POIs on the device. They should have the GPI extension. Then simply stick your GPX files on the MicroSD and power up your device. You should then be prompted to install your custom POIs.

I'm a little slow, but learning

Thanks for the replies! POI Loader did work to clean out my device of custom POIs and that worked.
Then I added another POI (LAFitness) and wanted to see if/how the Redbox and LaFitness would be seperated on my GPS display. I downloaded the LaFitness poi file to a folder named 'LaFitness', Redbox was already in its folder labeled Redbox. Both were the sole residents under a folder named GPS Files. I then used the POI Loader and pointed to 'GPS Files', on my GPS they were segregated. smile
I need this GPS to work flawlessly in a few days and was not too excited to screw up anything.

One question I haven't found an answer to; is there a downside to selecting to 'yes' having the POIs available when the SD card is removed. BTW, It is an 8g card.
If 'yes' is selected, can the POI Loader wipe them out if desired?
Thanks!
Compassrose

I don't believe there to be

I don't believe there to be a downside. Some units will always prompt to install the POI files on start until you do install them to the device.

POI Loader can see the added POIs and delete them if you choose to do that. Of course, you can delete them manually if need be.

the "downside"

The downside to answering YES is you now have the poi file on both the card and in the unit negating the extra storage offered by the card. As Sterphron pointed out, answering the question YES means it doesn't nag you to move them every time the unit powers up.

Custom POIs versus Favorites(saved)?

Of course, I am still a 765T user so I need to ask questions from time to time because I know nothing about a nuvi 40.

POI loader takes a .csv/.gpx file and, from it, creates a .gpi file whose "name" is what is entered on the second line of the fifth screen of POI Loader. I call these .gpi files "Custom POIs" which one gets to by
Where To? > [down arrow] Extras > Custom POIs
or
Where To? > Categories > [down arrow] > Custom POIs
depending on the device. The name found is what was entered into POI Loader.

Since the OP talked about the .bmp for Redbox showing up, I think POI Loader.

On the other hand, when you add to the device a .gpx file, I think about "Favorites" or "Saved Places". But at the same time I think GPX folder.

The OP talked about a POI folder on the SD card.

I have never tried using the POI folder on my SD card. As far as I can tell it was put there by the device because it found the card there upon startup. I did not put it there. The 765 SD card has a Garmin folder with a GPX and a POI folder. The 2595 has a Garmin folder with just a POI folder.

So my assumption is that if the OP put something into the Garmin/POI folder on the SD card, then "favorites" (not "Custom POIs") would be added to the device.

Comments, please.

i'm confused

Just what are you asking after rambling on?

Sorry to ramble

I guess my goal was to separate the discussion about the SD card from the OP's question about how to get rid of the multiple Redbox appearances.

It appears that the OP used POI Loader to remove all .gpi files (although there was no follow-up comment that attaching the 40 to the computer showed no .gpi files).

But the OP did ask

If the Redbox POIs are showing up in "Favorites" then I think the OP must both delete the entries from "Favorites" as well as remove any .gpx files relating to Redbox from both the device and the SD card.

That did not seem to be what was being discussed so I wondered if the newer devices were different from the 765 I am used to.

Also, the OP - in a different thread - said

Quote:

Yes I did use POI Loader. I also specified my SD card as the storage location. I ran it twice in attempts to troubleshoot, the second time when restarting my nuvi it prompted me if I wanted to make the new files available if the card were removed and I did allow that.
I do see the locations, in order of proximity, but nothing on my GPS indicates those are Redbox kiosk locations. I have not loaded any other POI files and am wondering if I do that how will I know what is what? Is this where the icon becomes important?
Thanks

What happens when you point POI Loader to the SD card but later ask POI Loader to remove all POIs?

all is good

Hey all, thanks for the replies.

Bottom line; I may have loaded POIs to both the device and card and after discovering that was not sure how to get rid the "extra" instance showing up. Also, I was concerned about which files on the device are safe to wipe out.

I have my answer, so far, so i will put a fork in this thread. smile
