street ahead

Wasn't there a series of nuvis that showed the name of the cross street coming up instead of the street you are driving on? Question #2, what do you owners of the 2595LMT and the 2797LMT think of those GPSr?

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

answer #1

Those models ending in 0 did this.

2555LMT

2555LMT shows the next street if you are not using a route.

Have it on my old Nuvi 350.

Have it on my old Nuvi 350. Like it.

You know what street you're on. You want to know how far along that street you've come. The cross street provides that.

I think

I think that Garmin has gone back and forth on this a few times. Some models show the street your on, some show the street name of your next turn, some, or all, may be different depending on whether you have a destination entered or not.

I solved the problem by buying a 3597 which shows boths streets. One at the top of the screen and one at the bottom. wink

The 2597 also shows both.

The 2597 also shows both.

Dual street dislay mode

2465(TW) and 2495(US) models , setting the locales to USA and in the cruise mode, the name of the upcoming cross street is displayed in local driving. On the freeways, the name of the freeway that you are on is displayed, until you are within a couple of miles from (some of) the upcoming exits. It switches over to displaying the name of the upcoming exit. I seem to remember they do the same mode switching too on local streets. You would need to be on an expressway type that do not have cross streets for a long stretch. I will try to check if I remember to.

The yr-2011/2012 Advanced/Prestige series models should behave the same?
yey-2013 models?

I just bought the 2597 lmt a

I just bought the 2597 lmt a week or so back so far still getting to know it but it seems they did away with some of the extra stuff my 1450 lmt has currency converter and calculator seem to be gone and picture viewer is hidden on diag. screen you get to by going to the volume screen and holding the upper right corner for a few seconds....

it shows the street I am on at the bottom and up coming street at the top.

Ahead

Both my 855 and 3790 show the names of the oncoming crossroad as well as names of paralelling side roads.

As an aside, I have NEVER used the currency converter or calculator. Do not use MP3 on the 855 either.

I have the full versions of the language translation programs on both GPS's but even they are hardly ever used.

As far as I am concerned anything other than travel guidance are just sales gimmicks, they do nothing to help me get from point A to B.

there's a lot of confusion

There's a lot of confusion regarding what you meant when you asked "Wasn't there a series of nuvis that showed the name of the cross street coming up instead of the street you are driving on?" I took that to mean the name of the cross-street was displayed in the banner bar and not just shown on the map. That feature went away when the model number of the 3 digit Nuvis changed from ending in 0 to ending in 5.

The reason, if I remember correctly was the claim that someone had patented the logic used to extract that information from an electronic map file and then display it. It would have cost more to fight the claim than it was worth and the GPS manufacturers didn't want to pay a hefty licensing fee either.

I remember this being brought up as well in past forum discussion. But then, I don't ever remember there ever being any valid proof supplied (someone prove me wrong, please) via internet links or otherwise. There may have been something very vague mentioned but I don't believe it was ever definitive.

If this is in fact the case, then why has Garmin flip-flopped on the function of the green status bar (while NOT navigating a route) so many times? Why can you change it's function simply by hard-resetting the unit and changing your locale to another country such as AU or GB?

It's my personal feeling (gut & otherwise) that Garmin flip-flopped on the the status bar's function for the sake of "pleasing users" (if you can believe that). Many users posting here and elsewhere reported that after calling Garmin support regarding the green status bar's function that Garmin tells them it's the way it is because of "user feedback". Because users are approx divided 50/50 on the bar's function (~50% want the upcoming street name, ~50% want the road you're currently on) going by this and other forums that I frequent, I believe that's why Garmin is also so undecided on it's function. Rather than giving users the choice as to what it's actual function is (don't want to confused those "soccer moms" now), they set it one way, or the other...no user configuration.

Now with the new units, it's no longer an issue because you have both on the map screen at once...upcoming cross street at the top, the street you're on at the bottom.

Another function that they've flip-flopped on is Auto Zoom...you can't turn it on/off in the US but it's a configurable option in other locales...maybe individuals in these other locales are brighter in some way and these configurations don't/won't confuse them.

So all is well in the land of the nuvi's status bar function with the new units...until Garmin decides to change it back for some bizarre reason. rolleyes

As to question #2
I have a 2797LMT. I love the 7" screen.

I mute the sound so I cant comment on how well it does / doesn't function.

I dont use BT on my GPS to make phone calls but do use BT to connect to my phone for other data uses

I do have the iPhone Smartlink app and have used it a bit with advanced weather and it worked well (animated radar, forecasts, etc) so it will be something I use as needed (wont keep it running all the time as it uses my phone data plan)

I am still playing with mounting types / locations in my Chevy truck.

Using the Garmin Auto Friction mount is OK but the unit does take up a lot of viewing space. The supplied suction cup mount works fine but again the unit is BIG (haven't checked on TX laws on windshield mounted devices as to size limits , etc

Most likely will use a mounting method to get it below the dash line all together (Panavise, Ram, Etc)
