BaseCamp update

When I fired up BaseCamp today an update was downloaded to my computer. I installed it and am playing with a new feature (Trip Planner). At least I think it is new. Not sure what benefit it will be to my Nuvi 50, but interesting none the less.

Base Camp 4.2.5 and 4.3.1 Problems

Just as I was thinking Garmin was getting their act together...

I've had good luck with GE updater and Base Camp 4.2.5 but when upgrading my 765T to 2015.10 it installed (after 3 hours!) to my 765 it errored out when trying to install to my Win7 PC. Undeterred, I commenced to building a trip in Base Camp and it went well. Good thing I saved it as a halfway-built gpx file though, because I decided to try installing the new map to my PC again. This time it failed again but I had BC open so I closed it and tried again- which worked according to the GE installer.

BUT, when I tried to open BC again it hung, and the PC rebooted. After reboot, running BC gave a "Missing MSVCR90.dll" error and suggested reinstalling the program. So.. reinstalled BC with same problem when starting. Uninstalled and reinstalled, same-o. Uninstalled and reinstalled this time with a fresh & updated version 4.3.1. Now I get a "Visual C++ Runtime Library Error of R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

[sigh] I guess I'm not really expecting anyone to have run across this & have an answer as much as I'm just venting. I was trying to hack out a nice route for a trip across country Sunday. The updated map did install because it shows up in Mapsource but I guess I may as well use my easier to see Android tablet with CoPilot instead of spending my last day messing about in Mapsource to finish my custom Nuvi route. sad

From reports here and elsewhere, the fix for the recent BaseCamp issue is to:

1) Uninstall Basecamp.
2) Delete the BaseCamp program files (which somehow were not done during the uninstall). The BaseCamp folder will be in c:\Program Files(x86)\Garmin\ or c:\Program Files\Garmin\.
3)Download a fresh BaseCamp and let it install.

I tried much of what you did (all the above except Step 2) and got results similar to yours.

This answer has been discussed here at The Factory for quite a while now, so you may want to look here before going to Garmin Customer Support confused You may find an answers days before Garmin offers the solution--and with less effort and delays.

Good luck. I hope this works for you.

Thanx

Thanx for that Craig. It was bugging me all last night so I'm going to give your #2 suggestion a try this am. I''l let you know what happens.

That worked !

Success! Thanks again Craig.
Uninstalled, manually deleted the entire Base Camp folder under C:/Program Files (nothing got removed during uninstall), also the entire Base Camp folder under C:/Program Data, as well as the Start Menu icon. Not sure what the uninstaller does since it looked like nothing was removed by it.

And, I'm happy to report that all of my previously set up pois, folders, lists, routes, trips, and map installs are still there. Not sure if that's because I also have MapSource installed, but I'll take it.

If you gave up because of the same problem, imo it's worth trying again because the latest version 4.3.1 seems to be a huge improvement/upgrade, with category import working now (although you need to re-import the pois). I still can't get the search for custom poi function to work though. I'm off to play with it a bit now.

Thanx, that's good to know, but kinda funny since NOTHING appeared to be removed by the "uninstall", lol.

Just lucky I didn't see the "AppData" folder when I manually deleted everything else. mrgreen

My biggest complaint with Basecamp is the cumbersome way it deals with transferring maps to GPS units. I frequently download and use 3rd party topo maps from www.gpsfiledepot.com. While both Basecamp and Mapsource read and display these files, I have yet to figure out how to transfer selected pieces of these maps to my GPS using Basecamp. With Mapsource, it was a snap to do using the "map" tool.

I have lifetime maps from garmin, both usa and europe. As the size of these grow I have taken to opting for download to computer, then send what parts I want. I've not found a way to do this in basecamp. Seems that the programmers went with flashy presentation over usable features. Any way that we can collectively speak up on this to garmin?

Since Basecamp won't load maps into gpsr's, I usually use Mapinstall for that purpose. It's counter productive to have to run two programs to do what Mapsource alone can accomplish.

Garmin wants to sell new gpsr's with more memory and large map files to fill it. It seems unlikely they will add a map load option to Basecamp.

This is on the help screen from BaseCamp.
Have not tried it but read on another post that someone used it and it worked, (can not find the post just now)
Go to Maps on your tool bar and scroll down to Install Maps.

Nice Find!

It appears that Mapinstall can be booted from within Basecamp using the procedure you outlined. Thanks for the tip marledge!

That leaves only one major issue for me with Basecamp. The fact that you can't have more than one copy of the program running at the same time. With Mapsource, you can run multiple copies at once and drag and drop data between them.

I would also have two copies of Mapsource open

I would open and drag and drop with Mapsource but with the file structure BaseCamp has you can drag and drop to and from anywhere you want. It is all there on the left hand side.

The great thing about this is you can have the poi in two or more places and anywhere you update the poi the other places that have the same poi will be updated too.
So far I have not missed running two copies at one time.

Making Slow Progress

I’m not that familiar with all Basecamp can do at this point. It’s a very slow learning process for me and I'm pretty much a novice. I still prefer to use Mapsource for most of my file creation. I have many versions of the same basic file that I regularly modify and load into a variety of automotive and handheld gpsr’s for friends and family. I’m sure there is a way to do this with Basecamp but for now, I find it easier to have 4 or 5 copies of Mapsource open and move data between them.
Unfortunately, the day will come when using Mapsource is no longer an option. Hopefully, by then I’ll have mastered Basecamp. The posts in this thread have been very helpful and my thanks to all who have contributed!

Basecamp

Mine was working, but now it won't even open. I tried everything here about deleting all the files, still will not open. Any other suggestions I would be grateful.

Just found fix

Uninstall the program then go to the windows RUN option and put in
%appdata%\..\local\garmin_corp
That brought up another file that wasn't getting deleted, so I deleted that and reinstalled the program and it works!!!!!!!

On my computer there are two folders in the %appdata%\..\local\garmin_corp folder:
BaseCamp.exe_Url_bzc2s5n5j2tjm5x31qtfforvybxvrxt1
BaseCamp.exe_Url_urbejbdz42c555ix3xqbitecusqt0tuj

Each of those folders has several folders with names that are apparently BaseCamp version numbers. Inside each version folder there is a file named “user.config”.

In the BaseCamp.exe_Url_urbejbdz42c555ix3xqbitecusqt0tuj folder, one of the folders has the name: “4.3.4.0” . (That is the version I am currently using.)

So did you delete the user.config file for the version you are using or did you delete the BaseCamp.exe_Url_urbejbdz42c555ix3xqbitecusqt0tuj folder, or what?

I have not had any problems with BaseCamp on my computer. Since you said BaseCamp was working, then quit, I wonder if maybe your anti-malware software messed up the user.config file.

BTW I deleted the user.config file for the version I am using and when I then opened BaseCamp it acted like it did when I first installed it – so I don’t think it would have been necessary for you to uninstall/re-install it.

I wish they still supported

I wish they still supported MapSource. All the Basecamp files I create won't work with my phone that has Garmin Mobile XT.

What kind of file are you exporting?

john9871 wrote:

If you are exporting pois as a csv file, the file will not work with Poi Loader because it is not in "standard garmin csv format". (Who knows why this is so?)

However if you export as a gpx file it should be compatible with Poi Loader. At least one that I tried worked ok to create a gpi file - I don't have a phone with Garmin Mobile XT to try the gpi file on.

I'm surprised anyone still

I'm surprised anyone still uses that software, as Garmin discontinued it and pulled all the links for it years ago. I still have it on my Windows Mobile phone, but I no longer use the phone.

I had hard time finding the manual for the software because links that google found mostly led to the Garmin site but there was nothing on the site about it.

I finally found a manual at a third party site and thought: "wow - using this software is almost kin to using DOS 3.1" smile

However, as someone that actually still has a computer with DOS 3.1 on it I figured I had better not throw any rocks. smile

Haven't used BaseCamp

I haven't used BaseCamp yet so I will have to give it a try.

What does BaseCamp do? Does

What does BaseCamp do? Does it work with transferring regular addresses from a computer to the GPS unit?

Still There

Although Garmin discontinued support for Mapsource, their last update V.16.3 dated 10/25/2010 is still available for download here:

Although no manual exists on Garmin's website, there is an extensive FAQ page available here:

If you are referring to Strephon_Alkhalikoi and my posts immediately above, we were talking about Garmin Mobile XT software, not Mapsource.

(Garmin Mobile XT is not a device – it is software that was installed on phones.)

Not referring to Mobile XT

I was pointing out that Mapsource is still around as well as providing a FAQ page link.

I Should have added a new comment but replied to your post in error. Sorry for the confusion.

Evert

Not sure why mine quit working I uninstalled the program a few times and deleted the extra file that didn't get deleted, by following advice from this thread. After no success, another site recommended my solution of opening run and putting that string in. There was only one file in mine. I deleted the file, reinstalled Basecamp and all is good (so far).

Yes.

Basecamp will work with the 1490 although some folks prefer Mapsource and continue to use it even though Garmin no longer supports or updates it.

... between my Mac and my Nuvi 2557LMT. Routes/trips that I create with BaseCamp can be transferred to my Nuvi and routes/trips created on my Nuvi can be copied to BaseCamp.

I don't understand why there seems to be so much hesitancy to use BaseCamp and the continuance to use what in my opinion is an inferior product, Mapsource.

Basecamp

I've never used any program other than Basecamp (aside from Google Maps) for routing purposes. When I got the Garmin a few months ago and found out trips could be planned on the computer, I had to check it out. I tend to figure out software as I go and I will admit, Basecamp has some nuances that don't seem quite right. I stumbled across Don Norwood's Youtube series and he sure saved me a lot of time.

http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?419522-Basecam...

The above link to this forum currently has 18 BC lessons linked and are very helpful. Not sure if they've been pointed to before, but Don does make the learning curve a lot shorter. I dare say, that I won't be taking any long trips without first setting them up in BC. Like anything new, just takes a bit of time to adapt.

Thank you! That is the intend to help get folks over the learning curve. The complete and update list of tutorials are listed here.. I have added a few Nuggets of information as well to parallel with some updates since the tutorials where produced. The newest update really saves some time and effort with the ALT key and Pan to move routes with a much easier rubber band method.

I don't think you'll find many people that will say that Basecamp is the easiest piece of software they have ever used BUT that's why the tutorials that Norwood created are so helpful.

His last update about using the ALT key to alter a route was exactly what I have been trying to figure out for a long time now. redface

I saw this on my PC that maintains several past versions of City Navigator NA. I assumed it was the maps that would have been deleted but that was just a guess on my part. I chose not to delete so I can't be sure what would have been removed.

It's so easy to remove old maps through Windows Control Panel that I didn't want BaseCamp to delete any of my data.

I chose "Delete".

I chose delete and haven't noticed any ill effects so far. The maps I had installed are still there. I don't see anything missing in My Collection. So I assume it was simply data base backups from previous versions that were deleted.

That said, I don't use Base Camp often and don't really rely on it for anything critical except loading Birds Eye maps to my Oregon 550.
