Are you happy with nuvi traffic info?

I'm about to buy my first gps. I know I'll get a garmin nuvi, but don't know which model. Seems from reading this forum that people don't believe the traffic is accurate. Is that true? If so, I'll spend less and get an older model with "fm traffic" instead of "HD" traffic. Thoughts? Model reccomendations? Thanks

If it cost .50 cents, it

If it cost .50 cents, it would be a rip off.

It's very possible they could be listening to different stations as one is digital the other is RDS.

No digital in B.C. Canada

Whatever traffic service/receiver you use, the traffic data will only be as good as the data that's being supplied and how quickly it reaches your unit. I've said this before and I'll say it again...use the traffic data supplied along with the old noodle and never expect much.

Are you saying my noodle is old? laugh out loud
I'll say it again, my 3790 works and my 3590 DOES NOT

Not Great.....

I would be very careful rerouting based solely on the FM traffic. It doesn't update often and may be missing things. It does allow you to "plan" but I find it about 70% accurate and useful. Better than nothing but

It's always been pretty

It's always been pretty helpful to me. I am glad I got the lifetime traffic on my unit.

I agree with these comments, and....

have experienced the same conditions.

Did not renew Garmin traffic

I bought the adapter and subscription, but did not renew it. Just wasn't reliable enough.

The lag time was too long, plus the FM reception area in Chicago was way less than was advertised. I would be almost to work before I would start picking up the traffic data.

Now I use my smartphone for traffic info. Between Google Traffic and Waze, I get much more up to date info.

1490 &765

I have a 1490 and 765. best feature is traffic

Traffic

I have a GMT60 which has HD Traffic - I find that it is slow in displaying the Traffic Incidents. When I use the cable that came with my 2557LMT after I added Total Traffic and comparing both - Total Traffic displays faster and more information then the HD Traffic. I have switched between the two depending on where I am going.

In most cases there is always a lag...

in an accident or something else causing a delay and it getting to us on our garmin. I look at it as better than nothing but as always if the incident just occured you will find it before the garmin does.

Never pay to much attention to it

Many times, when it showed delay, I was zooming down the freeway 65 to 70mph. Also, when I stuck in traffic with 10mph or slower, it showed no delay. Need I say more.

It's not the Nuvi that's the problem. It's that the radio station providing the traffic information is not updated or current. If the radio station only updates traffic every 10 to 15 minutes, then the information is not 'instantaneous' and that's the expectation of everyone complaining about the traffic reporting. They expect a traffic update reporting a change to be broadcast before it happens. The other complaint, (and valid IMO) is that not all roads or even major streets are covered.

It can also be the Nuvi that is the problem. I've had the Nuvi lock onto FM signals that don't provide good traffic instead of other stations that do. Unfortunately, the end user doesn't have a lot of control over this. When transitioning between traffic markets, it may take an unreasonable time for the Nuvi to start finding new stations, unless you initiate a search for yourself under settings. Not an ideal action to take while driving.

Its an "okay" tool..

Its an "okay" tool.. coverage for the roads are kinda disappointing.. I use Garmin Smartlink Traffic and it updates pretty quick compared to FM receiver which might take 15 minutes to update..

A lot of times it will tell me traffic jam on highway for 10-20 minutes but the detour would take even longer in reality, since there is a lot of traffic on detour road too but doesn't have coverage for GPS unit to show "as delay"..

Traffic can be more useful when traveling to other areas

Our 3590 LMT was put to the test when we traveled
in and around the Portland Oregon area.

It displayed old traffic info for one mountain
route (road was closed to traffic x hours ago due
to flooding - water all gone by the time we went
through the intersection in question).

The in-town Portland reports were spot on - paving
operations around the airport (I-205) and a reasonable
rerouting to the airport was correct.

Other reports of accidents and breakdowns were reported
miles before the encounter and accurate locations
(usually before AM/FM traffic report on the radio).
The "route to" location included the traffic/incident
reports and alternative routes.

For your choice, you need to consider the area
you will use your GPS. What radio support is
used for the traffic (RDS or HD radio)?
Are you normally within the transmission limits of the
radio traffic area? How many stations support
RDS or HD traffic in your area?

?

So what is it? Different radio stations? Dummy behind the Gps? Why are these things not working from model to model?
Dunno. I do know that my 3790 works and my 3597 does not. I've said it numerous times. Saturday morning we leave for a 400 mile return trip up to the Lake. Btw i make this trip quite often. Coming back this afternoon on the highway, it got quite congested about 30 miles from home. Hmm.. traffic icon is still Green. It ends up we stop and start for about 30 minutes. Icon still green, no mention of anything. About 10 miles from home the icon turns yellow, traffic jam just before the bridge....bumper to bumper it says. Count down starts on the screen. I get there and low and behold.....NOTHING. We all are still doing 60, no tie ups no congestion not even a lot of cars. What ever happened was LONG gone, and not gone for just 10 minutes either. This is a 4 lane highway, it would take a long time to clear it out, but Icon is still yellow, till i get past where it said it was Bumper to Bumper, then it turns green. Like i said I travel this highway lots. My 3790 never ever made these mistakes. The 3590 is a joke.

Not really useful...

Not really useful since by the time you get the notice, your only way is thru the traffic.

Depends

Today while driving the 202 in the Phoenix area I encountered 2 "traffic ahead" alerts while driving through them at 70mph. I think the reporting service was out since this was Sunday.

Check the maps

Some areas of the US and Canada have no service.

radiobtc.com has a set of radio signal strength maps for
the US and Canada. Check the RDS and HD maps to
see if you have coverage.

http://www.radiobtc.com/market-coverage.html

has links to the RDS coverage (left side of the
page) and HD coverage (right side of the page)
for the major city areas.

Remember that the maps are only a best guess by
computer algorithm of possible radio traffic service
reception by your Garmin receiver.

no

some time the traffic info is not real time.

It works good in Tucson

Helped avoid a few tie ups around Christmas

It is sketchy at best.

It is sketchy at best. Maybe 30% of the time does it give useful traffic advisory's. Even that might be overly optimistic.

Traffic observations

When I first got a 3490, traffic was horrible but thru many software updates it got better. I learned early to move as much receiver cable on top of the dash for better reception. It didn't work at all until I moved it. I'm now using a 3597 and it is a lot better, but out of habit, I still have the antenna on the dash under the windshield. I live in the Atlanta area and have noticed it more accurate than Inrix in some cases. The 3597 traffic pane is better for reporting upcoming traffic and there are more audible prompts for both new and cleared traffic problems.
Recently began using the IOS Smart Link application, but traffic drops too often to trust it.
