I'm trying to load the H-D Dealers POI file onto my
Nuvi 1450LMT which I understand can't read a gpx file.
I've converted the H-D Dealers.gpx file to a cvs file using the Extra POI online editor.
http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/extra/
When I try to load the H-D Dealers.cvs file using
the POI Loader I get and error such as
There is a data format error on line 5, the data earlier in the file will be written, but no more data can be written from this file.
I've tried to delete the line in question and save the file again but get similar errors elsewhere.
I'm a novice at this. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
no need
There is no need to convert from a GPX to CSV. Garmin's POILoader program uses both as input files. The GPX contains additional features such as allowing more control over how the information is displayed on the screen and enabling the phone number to be dialed through a Bluetooth connection with a phone.

As Box Car has indicated, there is no need to worry about whether the file that is input to POI Loader is a .csv or a .gpx file.
Do this for us, please. Just run POI Loader and point it to a folder that has the original .gpx file you downloaded from http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1995.
I just loaded it to my 765 without problems and want to verify that you can too.
I will try to see what happens when it is run through Extra POI online editor.
Edit: I see what happens. Look at the 5th line when the file is input to Extra POI online editor. It does not start with coordinates.
Go ahead and load the .gpx file with POI Loader.
Threw caution to the wind
Threw caution to the wind and tried the .gpx file download and install and all went well! I don't recall where I got the idea my device wouldn't work without converting to .cvs but I was obviously wrong.
Many thanks to BoxCar an Jgermann for my education.
glad to be of help

Don't worry about having incorrect information about what your unit can and can't do. Those here will be glad to correct any misinformation you may have picked up somewhere. Sometimes we are even nice about it.

Thanks for the update - glad it worked.
You might have gotten the idea because there are many who deride .gpx files. However, I am a fan because there are so many things that can be accomplished with them, not the least of which is the ability to get alerts without having to use the "Manual" mode of POI Loader.
Based on your "caution to the wind" comment, I will ask if you have made a backup of your unit. With a full backup you can eliminate most risk.

I'm afraid I don't know much yet about alerts as far as the .gpx files go.
I used the manual method with the H-D Dealers files and set the alert for 2 miles (10,560 ft).
If I had not used the manual mode, how would it be different?
Backup...what's that?
Seriously, I had never backed up my device
so after your suggestion I searched for how to, lit up Garmin Express and did it. Thanks

For setting a distance as part of a GPX file, the easiest way is to load Extra_POI_Editor. It's a free program written by a member here. Sadly, TurboCCC is no longer active so there won't be updates to the many useful programs he has written.
For Extra_POI_Editor (or EPE for short) start here:

Garmin Express only backups up your Favorites/Saved Places.
We would suggest a full backup. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394
GPX
You might have gotten the idea because there are many who deride .gpx files.
There are also some users who labor under the mistaken impression that their auto navigation devices are not compatible with GPX files. Older handhelds may not be able to use GPX files, but that's a horse of a different color.

I have followed your advice and did a complete backup. Now let's hope I never have to use it.
Thanks much.
