Boy, that would seem to be a rather nasty bug. rolleyes

Hmm

The update went well on my 2460.

I wonder if the delay from our best-guess availability date of map update 2014.10 is associated with this bug. If so and if this is the only series affected, maybe the map update will be out soon. If other nuvi series have the same issue and the issue is causing the delay in offering the map update, then let's hope to see some more announcements of firmware updates.

Older Models

The 7x5 series has not been updated in some time while the 7x0 series has. If there is another update coming out and all it has is map authentication fixes then why bother? I have a lot of "data abort" crashes logged in my Nuvi's error log that appear to be memory pointer errors that I know WILL NEVER be fixed because Garmin wants you to by newer models with their own set of bugs. I have complained in the past that Garmin does not appear to have any mechanism to collect crash data from the field like a Windows or iPhone app does. At the very least, the Garmin Updater should send the logs back to Garmin for analysis but then one might actually expect them to take time to fix the bugs.

Also my 2460

had firmware update to 3.40 today. Gotta wonder about that map authentication fix ... wish they were a bit more informative.

Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.

Thanks for the Update!

Thanks for the Update!

Updated last night

When I connected my 2450 to my computer, before the update, it acted funny. The screen would flash from the Garmin screen and then to the little computer hookup at the bottom several times. Finally it would show connected and both the icons would show. This went on for about 2 minutes.

I did the update, turned it on and all seems well, and then put it to charge overnight to make sure the battery was charged.

It fully charged and I just now put it back on it's usb cord to the computer and it did the same thing as last night. It just cycles through the two icons for a minute or two then finally the two icons show together and the computer alerts me that it is connected.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Could it be a flaky cable or USB socket? You could try other sockets on the computer. I'd suggest trying a different cable but if you're like me, you have over a half dozen cables that would work with older nuvis but only one with the micro(?) connector needed by the 24xx series nuvi.

CraigW

I tried the other usb socket and the same happens with both.

I use this same cable with the ac plug that came with my Nexus 7 to charge my Nexus 7 and it works ok with that.

I use the short micro usb cable that came with my 2450 and it lets the computer see it as a drive.

My other micro usb cables put it in charging mode.

I just hooked my camera to the usb port with my mini usb cable and the camera works great as it always did to transfer photos.

update::: I just turned my 2450 on. Plugged the USB cable in first to the 2450 then the usb port. It worked this time better. I tried the other usb port the same way and it cycled for about 30 seconds then work fine. ?????

Type Of USB Port?

Have you tried connecting the Nuvi to a USB port that is wired directly to the motherboard?

Sometimes when connected to a USB hub issues arise.
It may have worked in the past using a hub but may cause conflicts when hardware is added.
Worth a try, you have nothing to lose.

Not sure

I am connecting the USB to my computer. Is that what you mean?
There are USB ports on the front and on the back and I am using the front.

Hubs and USB ports

mgarledge wrote:

A hub is an external device that plugs into a USB port on the computer and oftentimes offer four more ports from the device. You don't use a hub.

That being said, it's commonly stated that USB ports on the back of the computer may allow a device to work while front ports cause some type of issue. Using a port on the back of your computer--even if it temporarily requires you to unplug another device for your test in case all back ports are currently in use--is worth a try if you have problems with a device when using a front port. It's worth a try with your 2450 given what you described in your first post. But if you have a defective cable with one wire or socket pin connecting intermittently, the only real fix is a replacement cable.

I Always

Use the USB port on the front of my computer, never had a problem d/l maps.

I will try the back and if it does the same I will order a new cable. Thanks

Good luck.

The cable would be my prime suspect given your history and description:

Looks to be $15 or less:

One eBay possibility:

Does anyone know if any USB micro cable will work or does a Garmin data cable require some odd resistor or pin wiring to work in data mode?

My other

USB cable puts it in charge mode.

Thanks for the cable link.

Craig, any microUSB cable should work on any nuvi that requires it. There is no special wiring/resistor/whatever in a standard data cable because the data cable is meant solely for that purpose. That being said, *some* cables do have the resistor built in and those are what usually put the nuvi into charge mode. The special resistor embedded in the cable/internal pins is mostly meant for a cable that supplies power to the unit (like an external AC adapter) to charge it.

Seems as that particular cable is one of the ones that put the nuvi into charge mode. You should probably go and get a microUSB data cable at a place like Best Buy as they usually sell mainstream types of cables. Yes, it's expensive ($19.99) compared to online retailers or a place like MonoPrice.com but at least you can easily return it if it doesn't work for you.

Is the one that came with my 3D glasses to charge. Maybe that's what wrong. The replacement cable that comes from Garmin is only $15.95 so that is probably what I will do.

Thanks for all the help. Don't know what I would do without all of you.

Edit: I took my cable and plugged it into my netbook and it never would connect. Just kept rotating through off, one icon and then another icon and sometime showed both icons at the same time but never connected to my netbook. I update my maps to this netbook for travel so I know it worked on the last map update. I have been using the cable to charge my Nexus 7 so when I get my new cable I will not use it for anything but the Nuvi 2450. A lesson learned, just wore it out I guess.

@dorkus
Thanks for the concise statement. I put that info into the glossary to help others

Used old cable

I needed to send a location from Google Maps to my 2450 and plugged the cable that is not working in and just waited. It took about 4 minutes but finally recognized it.

If something is bad why does it finally recognize the unit?

I would be fearful of trying a full City Navigator map update with a potentially defective cable--or some other GPS or computer-based software?/hardware? issue that you appear to be having.

Less critical things like your send a location or installing Custom POIs may still be doable.

Thanks, I won't use it to update maps till I buy a new cable

....Just remembered I bought an AC charger for 2450 a few months ago and just looked at it and it has the AC plug that plugs into a USB socket. I unplugged the AC adapter, plugged the cable into my 2450 and to my PC and it worked great...It was the cable and I had the cable I needed all along. Thanks for all the great help and suggestions..I think I will still buy another cable as a spare just incase. I send pois from google maps on my computer a lot when we are going somewhere that I will only need the poi once.

Mary

And: thanks everyone for all the help.

Mary,

When looking for a replacement cable, don't get one of the super skinny ones. Look at all the cables and get one that' roughly the same diameter of the majority. The reason is the thicker cables will charge your unit faster because the internal wires are larger. Larger wires allow more current ("juice") to go between the charger and the unit.
